The GIS Technician supports the maintenance, accuracy, and usability of geospatial data for local government and public safety clients. This role is responsible for data editing, quality assurance, map production, and GIS database support, working with a variety of municipal datasets including utilities, addressing, zoning, and transportation networks.

The GIS Technician plays a key role in ensuring geospatial data is accurate, consistent, and aligned with organizational standards. This position collaborates closely with the Service Delivery Manager and GIS Analysts to support projects, respond to client needs, and maintain reliable GIS operations across multiple client environments.

In this position you will:

Collect, input, edit, and maintain GIS datasets from various sources (CAD drawings, field data, spreadsheets, and client systems).
Perform routine updates to municipal geospatial layers.
Ensure proper attribution, domain usage, and adherence to client and organizational standards.
Maintain consistency across datasets, geodatabases, and multi-client environments.
Convert as-built and construction record information into GIS features using established standards.
Interpret plan sets, redlines, and supporting documentation to capture asset location, geometry, connectivity, and attributes.
Translate CAD data into GIS feature classes aligned to municipal schemas (e.g., utilities, transportation, and asset inventories).
Apply consistent editing practices for linear and network-based systems (water/sewer/storm, roadway centerlines, etc.).
Perform QA/QC on spatial and attribute data across key municipal datasets (utilities, addresses, zoning, etc..).
Validate topology, network connectivity, and alignment between related datasets (e.g., address points and road centerlines).
Identify and correct errors such as geometry issues, incorrect attribution, and duplication.
Document recurring data issues and contribute to improving data standards and workflows.
Assist Service Delivery Manager or appointed GIS Analyst lead in delivering project work, meeting timelines, and addressing client requests.
Support project teams by preparing field verification follow-ups tied to as‑built uncertainty.
Respond to client data and mapping requests with accuracy and timeliness, clearly communicating status and any issues that could affect delivery.
Produce basic maps and conversion deliverables that support projects and client needs.
Use GIS tools (e.g. ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online) to create standardized and custom map products for review/verification and client handoff.

Required qualifications

1–3 years of experience in GIS data editing or technician-level GIS production work (municipal or utilities experience a plus).
Working knowledge of GIS editing concepts (feature creation, snapping, basic geoprocessing, attribution).
Ability to interpret technical documentation (plan sets, markups, construction notes) and translate it into structured GIS updates.
Strong attention to detail and comfort working with repetitive, standards-driven production workflows.
Clear written communication skills for documenting edits, assumptions, and QA notes.

Preferred qualifications

Experience with CAD-to-GIS conversion workflows (e.g., mapping CAD layers to GIS schema, handling annotation, eliminating drafting artifacts).
Familiarity with local government or utility data models (e.g., common municipal asset schemas, domains, subtype logic).
Experience with quality control practices (topology rules, network connectivity checks, and review tracking).

Additional qualifications

Ability to provide three to four professional references, including at least one current or former supervisor.
Ability to successfully pass a background check.
