Van Eaton Ready Mix is a local, family-owned and operated business, originating in 1998 when Mike Van Eaton purchased the first portable ready-mix plant to produce hog slats for his swine equipment business. Due to high demand, the company has expanded to multiple permanent locations and now offers a wide range of durable concrete products for various applications. We also currently operate several portable batch plants that can be set up anywhere in the U.S. to accommodate large projects across the nation.
Job Summary
The Diesel Mechanic is a skilled, safety-sensitive position responsible for diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining diesel-powered trucks, heavy equipment, and portable batch plant machinery. This role requires advanced mechanical aptitude, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to perform work independently in both shop and field environments. The majority of duties are performed in the field at job sites and operating locations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues in diesel-powered equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, and rebuilds on diesel engines and related systems (fuel, air, cooling, lubrication, exhaust).

Troubleshoot engine electronics, ECMs, wiring, and emissions systems (DEF, DPF, EGR, SCR).

Repair or replace major components including engines, transmissions, differentials, and hydraulic systems.

Inspect parts using precision measuring tools and perform welding as needed.

Conduct routine servicing such as oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks.

Respond to field breakdowns and perform on-site repairs when required.

Test equipment to ensure safe and proper operation.

Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.

Follow all safety policies and perform other assigned duties.
Qualifications

Proven experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic.

Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostics.

Ability to use computer-based diagnostic tools and read technical manuals.

Experience with Class 8 trucks, concrete mixers, batch plants, or off-road equipment preferred.

Familiarity with Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, or similar engines preferred.

Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail and safety.

Physically able to perform job duties, including lifting up to 100 pounds and working in varied positions and environments.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred. One to two years of related experience and/or a combination of both.
