Position Summary:
The LPC / College Counselor:
- Provides professional counseling services while also supporting students identified as at-risk academically, socially, or behaviorally.
- Provides individualized planning and advice to students and their parents
- Helps students identify, apply, and eventually attend the school that is the best fit given their interest, family goals and financial circumstances.
The ideal candidate is a licensed counselor with experience in both mental health counseling and academic/college counseling experience, particularly in online or blended learning environments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Mental Health Counseling
- Provide individual and group counseling to students addressing social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs
- Conduct assessments, develop counseling plans, and provide ongoing support for student well-being
- Assist students in developing coping skills, resilience, and self-advocacy
- Provide crisis intervention and support as needed
- Maintain confidential counseling records and ensure compliance with professional standards
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, SPED staff, and families to support student success
- Participate in faculty meetings, IEP/504 meetings, and professional development
- Communicate with families about both counseling and academic support plans in a professional and proactive manner
College Counseling
Duties involve, but are not limited to:
- Developing college workshops for students and parents and providing individual counseling to answer questions about high school curriculum, college acceptance, the application process, etc.
- Deliver college curriculum to prepare students for post-secondary planning
- One-on-one advising: Assisting students with identifying majors, applications, college essays and scholarship essays
- Processing college application paperwork and writing letters of recommendation for admissions and scholarships
- Researching and advertising summer study, internships, and scholarship opportunities
- Facilitating the selection process for students nominated to represent the school for summer programs or scholarships
- Maintaining a working calendar of events and tasks within the office
- Coordinating and administering standardized tests:
- PSAT/NMSQT to sophomores and juniors and providing post-test counseling to develop individual test preparation plans for the SAT/ACT, as needed
- ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test for interested sophomores, juniors, and seniors
- Working as the school’s SSD Liaison (Services for Students with Disabilities) and assuring that the information process on college testing accommodations is coordinated with the Academy’s Special Education Coordinator
- Updating and maintaining college test stats, college acceptance data, scholarship tracking, and alumni information
- Assisting with processing incoming transfer credits, issuing transcripts, and devising remediation plans for high school failing semester grades to allow on-time graduation
- Maintaining the school’s college counseling website, Naviance, and college rep visit site
- Developing background information for the end-of-year awards ceremony highlighting the plans of each graduating senior
- Collaborating with the Great Hearts College Counseling Team in Texas and consulting with the Director of Academics as needed.
- Chaperoning College Counseling events and networking with colleges
Qualifications, Competencies, and Strengths
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Mental Health, School Counseling, or related field
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) required; School Counselor certification preferred
- Experience providing counseling services to K–12 students
- Experience with at-risk student interventions, behavior support, or academic mentoring
- Experience in online or blended learning environments preferred
- Experience in school college guidance or selective college admissions

ExtraCurricular Activities:
Teachers/staff are expected to contribute to the broader life of the school community beyond their classroom instructional duties. As part of their professional responsibilities, teachers/staff may be asked to volunteer time to support school-sponsored activities such as student clubs, extracurricular programs, academic competitions, community events, and other enrichment opportunities. Participation in these activities helps foster a vibrant school culture, supports student development, and strengthens relationships within the school community. While specific assignments may vary based on school needs and teacher/staff interests, faculty members and staff are expected to demonstrate a spirit of service and collaboration by contributing time and effort to these initiatives throughout the school year.
Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
Type of clearance:
Must complete Texas and Arizona Department of Public Safety fingerprint clearance and background check. Additional states may be required.
Physical functions: Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 50 pounds approximately.
