My very first remote team meeting included a speaker who was virtually nude, who apparently thought she had a screen cover. No one informed her, it was extremely uncomfortable, and never a word was said. The meeting was mandatory so I couldn't log off, so I was forced to look at this woman’s bare chest for 45 minutes.  

My clinical coordinator NEVER responded to my emailed questions, and when I finally complained, after many unanswered emails to her, I was told by her manager that she had too many supervisees to have to worry about answering questions, and that workers were expected to be independent and self-sufficient. Well and good, but I didn't even know what she was talking about half the time. I spent hours trying to find answers to her "requests", posed in vernacular exclusive to the company, to no avail. Searching their website, taking online courses, seeking answers from others. I even asked for a mentor but wasn't given one until nearly 8 weeks into my stint with the company, and the one I was given was every bit as negative and demeaning as my supervisor. (I'm guessing maybe they chose the most negative unkind people they can find to be supervisors). 

I attended several peer to peer support groups, where it became obvious that the culture is one of fear. You either "fit in" or you don't. By fit in, it seems they mean that you just "get it" and understand their lingo, or you don't and if you don't understand what is being said to you, or asked of you, well good luck to you. It was at times, a bit like being dropped into a foreign country without a translation guide. 

They have zero interest in developing talent. Which is really unfortunate, because three months in, I was doing very well, but too late, I was told my stats, (from weeks 1-3 when I had COVID - but no one really cared, least of all my supervisor, who didn't respond to my pleas for help, or my explanation that was and had been very sick), didn't meet their expectations and "I wasn't a good fit". So, I was told that I wouldn't be given any more cases. Clearly it wasn't an issue of clinical ability, I didn't break any laws, though they tried to allege I had, and I didn't do anything wrong, I guess I just didn't keep enough of the initial cases they referred to me. 

I later learned they had a rule that they only assigned 10 cases to new therapists for the first 90 days, but apparently, they didn't adhere to that rule with me, because in my very first weekend of work, I had so many clients, I struggled to take bathroom breaks. I was busy from morning to night throughout the weekend and had no time for meals either. (I'm not sure how long that lasted, but probably for the first month, (remember, I was really sick as well) I was inundated with cases, well beyond the 10 they allegedly limited me to). Apparently though, rules only applied to me, not the system, my supervisor or anyone else. 

They don't want great clinicians; they want people who can read a script. It's unfortunate, because they do have a great opportunity to make changes in people's lives, but apparently that's not what they are looking to do.

I’d like to say, that I am not a newbie, I’ve been in the field for more than 20 years, and I’ve worked in a lot of different types of jobs. I’ve even worked in several different types of government positions, which use vernacular like no one’s business, so I’m not a newbie to that either, but at least they were willing to explain. AbleTo flat out refused to really train their employees. They seem to be proud of their sink or swim culture.

Although there are plusses to working at Ableto, the negatives far outweigh them. You are stuck at a low salary and are told from the outset that they do not move you from one tier to the other or into higher roles, so if you want to remain a BC at the initial pay rate - all good (and the rate is about half what competitors pay). 
They don't pay you for note taking time, prep or emails. This is not standard. You are normally compensated for time where you are working for a client in any capacity as long as you can show that. So if you're preparing documents to send them, writing their notes, speaking to their care team via chat or email, etc. - it's unpaid. 
They also only pay you half the time for a no-show, but you still spend a great deal of time, notating the no-show, contacting the team and finding out what happened with the PT, then rescheduling, re-noting and informing. So, essentially, you're doing an hours work and getting paid a half hour. 

You never have meetings for supervision. I saw a few notes about this saying they did, so perhaps that's down to my supervisor. But as far as I was told, it was only as needed for a PT or by specific request, not regularly to talk about your PT's. Which also would be normal in a mental health setting. 
The titles blur and a lot of the TH provide advice that overlaps, and the clarity of roles is muddy, so often PT's will try to use each TH and BC session as a TH session. You have to be very clear and boundaried, which is fine; however, that doesn't always happen from the side of the TH - who in multiple instances (different Therapists), told clients they would be working with a therapist and a "life coach". Which meant I had to clarify my role again and again with them as the therapist did not even understand it. 

Ultimately - the goal is a positive one, but they are missing the mark. They aren't supporting the people who are supporting the clients. Giving flexibility in schedules is not support - it's convenience. And leaving them to do their job while sending canned weekly emails is also not support. They need to implement systems that support one another. 
They need to have systems where teams meet prior to work with a PT, so they look at notes and clarify roles and goals. 
And they need to acknowledge good employees not with words, but with pay and promotions. Saying "good job" isn't always enough. 


My experience at AbleTo has been very disappointing. 
If you're a therapist looking for a supportive and respectful environment, I strongly advise you to look elsewhere. 
This company seems to operate with a complete lack of empathy - quite ironic, given that it’s a psychotherapy organization.
The management is unprofessional: the supervisors are disrespectful and can’t even manage the basic courtesy of addressing us, employees, by name in emails or message, it's as if it’s too much effort to personalize a single line of text. 
You’ll get messages like “Hi” in lieu of your name.
There is no acknowledgment of your humanity, experience, skills, age, and there is no effort to respect you - overall, nothing that fosters a sense of being valued as a professional, in my opinion. 
The lack of respect and support from management extends to every aspect of the job. There's no room for collaboration - don’t even think about trying to engage in meaningful dialogue or you might be shocked by the poorly concealed rage of their managers. Their managers appear to be in need of anger management. 
It's a poisonous environment where you’ll find yourself dreading every interaction with the people who are supposed to guide and support you.
Compensation is also a major issue. It's at the absolute bottom of the barrel. 
The pay doesn’t even come close to compensating for the stress and dissatisfaction that come with the job. 
There’s no opportunity for growth, no incentive to stay, and you certainly won’t feel appreciated for the hard work you do. Remember: the therapists are the only revenue-generating staff, as the bosses do not see clients but rather draw a salary in exchange for their “managerial expertise”. 
The atmosphere is draining, and it’s hard to imagine anyone thriving in such a  work environment. I never met anyone thriving – rather departing for other opportunities. The manager-cronies just “scratch each others’ backs” and thus stay “relevant”. Sad!
Personally, I would not recommend working at AbleTo.



This company promotes profitability ABOVE ALL ELSE, including the mental health of therapists. There is utter disregard for work/life balance. Therapists are expected to hold 26 sessions/week as a minimum. In order to meet the 26 sessions/week, therapists are being told to take their 1 hour breaks out each day to allow for more scheduling. With this "solution," you no longer have a planned break everyday and you could end up with 8 sessions or more if everyone shows. AbleTo's response is that you will naturally have 1-2 no-shows per day. However, that does not always happen and so what do you do if 8 people show up? Also, how is it helpful if your no-show is 8 am and then you have 7 in a row scheduled with 1 or more initial consultations, which are much more time-consuming than a regular session? The no-shows are highly unpredictable and something AbleTo does not understand. Therapists are also being told to schedule outside their availability if getting a lot of no-shows in one week. Why in the world would anyone want to revolve their life around inconsiderate people not showing up for appointments to satisfy a company's profitability goal? This proposed plan is also a gem. If you take 1-2 days of PTO during the week, you should still aim to achieve close to the 26 sessions by removing blockers and keeping a no-show call list. Let's do the math - 26 sessions in 4 days is 6-7 sessions/day. In 3 days, it's 8+. How about if I take a week off, the preceding week, I just aim for 52 sessions? The insanity is mind-boggling. Upper management apparently doesn't realize how these irrational and unhealthy demands are affecting program therapists. Perhaps when there is a mass exodus, they will get a clue. Looking forward to hearing the company response and whether it will be canned corporate speak or an actual proposed solution to this very real problem. 

I have been working as a coach for 1.5 years after working in Hospitals for 20 years in Behavioral Health. Some coaches are more experienced than therapists and are RN’s and have multiple degrees and years of experience but aren’t given the same opportunities. Coaches have no benefits and no yearly bonuses that I know of. I have a great boss who genuinely cares about us and listens. The future remains uncertain. The paychecks are pocket change and can’t be used as a main source of income. Paychecks are unpredictable. There are many no shows and delays in treatment which impacts your pay. It’s great for a side job but not to make a living. The management is trying to improve but there is a lot of competition out there and the future is unknown. We are given pep talks but it’s just CYA and more of the same every month. Most of the PT’s are very appreciative and enjoy the program. I have met some of the nicest people  and enjoy working with them each week. Treatment is only as good as the PT allows it to be. I am appreciative of the opportunity to work at AbleTo but may need to look elsewhere due to decreased volume and less than desirable paychecks. They have more employees than PT’s to go around. All employees need to be valued and treated the same and be provided the same opportunity for FT. Coaches are never given an explanation other than “ We don’t have plans at this time to offer FT coaching positions but if you know of any therapists please refer them . “We are offering full time positions with sign on bonuses.” How are coaches to interpret that?? “We appreciate you , need you and value you but we can’t offer you full time.” There were close to one million sessions last year. Really??






Behavioral coaches are simply not valued at this company. A minimum of 13 hours per week is required to have available. The company seldom fills this or the client rescheduled with 12 hours notice on an app so there is no opportunity to accept other work since there have been times where I have had a reassignment with a couple of hours notice. The hourly session rate does not account for unpaid admin which takes more time than anything else. No one communicates on teams which I suppose doesn’t affect employees who have salary and benefits the same way it does coaches who are spending their unpaid personal time trying to resolve issues.
The therapists are given bonuses for good metrics so they choose not to mark clients as no shows or enforce this with clients which only hurts the coaches. Coaches also have to use their personal computer and internet but as a W2 can’t recoup any of this money come tax time. When I left the company they locked me out of my Chrome browser as they remained “administrator” and I had to have an independent professional reset my computer to use my own laptop. I didn’t bother to contact them to fix it since it took an average response time of a week to respond when I was an active employee. You make less than minimum wage if you factor in all of the work that you have to do just to hold 7 sessions with a client.
Their practice makes it impossible to implement short term CBT with all of the PTO the therapists take and no limits on clients ability to reschedule. They offer no health care to coaches even if you work 25 hours. I had Covid and had to work or go without money I needed to pay for my healthcare that I have to purchase independently after tax dollars. This company only cares about themselves and maybe the therapists whose license they need to operate.



The caseload requirements are high: 35/week. The 8wk program is systemized which can feel automatized, but helpful when servicing such a high case load. I feel a bit bamboozled because I was told I had schedule flexibility coming in and now we cannot put in blockers to manage our schedules and now we are getting booked 40+ sessions a week with 7-9 sessions a day. It feels like a recipe for burnout since we can't schedule admin time.

I feel fortunate that I have a wonderful supervisor who views me as a holistic person. As a company though, the emphasis is on metrics and outcome measures. These can feel not reflective of actual progress sometimes. It feels like AbleTo does not look at or implement what workplace practices prevent burnout in clinicians.

The payscale has varied wildly across clinicians. Some clinicians in CA make 60ishK and some folks make 90-100k. This is an opportunity to address disparity within the company and engage in more ethical payment across clinicians. AbleTo offers a ton of bonuses if yoy meet the metrics, so there is opportunity to make beyond that base salary.

Since I started, a ton of FT people left. Some moved to 1099. Most left altogether. I don't think the company is inherently bad, but burnout is almost inevitable the way it is structured now.

The pay was great, but even that couldn't keep me there, which seems to be a common theme at Ableto. 

I joined thinking I'd be helping create services and products that served those living with mental health issues, with the side benefit of growing my career and skills. What I got was an unorganized company that worked in silos and lacked strong leadership to improve processes, structure, and culture, ultimately resulting in lackluster products and services. 

All this would be somewhat ok if it were recognized or acknowledged so we could all move forward and be a better company to fulfill our mission of helping people in need. Unfortunately, I rarely saw leadership take responsibility for the underlying problems and often saw them place the blame squarely on the employees themselves. 

After joining, I soon saw colleagues that were quick to blame others because that's what many managers were doing. It was "every man for himself", something I wasn't really used to, having worked at very positive, inclusive companies that shared in failures and successes. 

Don't be fooled by the smoke and mirrors like "mental health" PTO days, being certified as a "Great place to work", and free snacks at the office. If you're looking for a positive culture where leadership and colleagues support you and don't treat you like a broken cog in a wheel, this probably isn't the place for you. 



If you want a start up job and enjoy following a script this job is for you. It is flexible and okay pay. They have some good information in the programs. The management does not appear to be very knowledgeable. Young managers with little experience. Some are very condescending and rushed in their conversations with you. I have been in private practice 25 years and took this just to fill in some hours during slow time. Have been there almost 2 years and weaning myself out the door. At times they do things that are not safe and border on unethical. Will set up intakes for people who they know will not fit in the program and then have you later turn them down. If they have had suicidal ideations for example - then you get to look up on psychology today and give them random names in their area to go to! Many intakes are older people who have know idea why you are calling or how they got their number. They just want people in the program even if they don't need it. If there are needs in between sessions, you do not get paid but expected to call people, follow up, etc. The training is all online and independant. If you have questions you are encouraged to just look it up online. This program does offer some positives and helps some people who may not go get regular face to face counseling. I have worked with other telehealth programs and this one is on the lower end with quality, program, support and knowledge. All about numbers and not quality or true care.

The ability to work remote and the offer of “flexibility “ and a good starting pay was what led me to AbleTo. 
I soon realized my mistake. The flexibility they claim to have doesn’t exist for FT therapists, you will be salaried and you will be required to work way beyond your stated schedule to complete unrealistic expectations of the management. 
Training is non existent and completed on computer modules with no hope of any actual training by real people. You are treated poorly by management if you are not performing fast enough or if you ask questions about anything they do t agree with. 
Therapists considering this as a better option to your current place think very hard. 
The productivity here is just as high as any other community mental health center, there’s zero flexibility, zero support from management and long hours as with community mental health. 
This is not really therapy being provided either just a call center environment with very scripted responses for insurance beneficiaries who are called by reps of AbleTo to enroll in this program.
