Computer Science is not a career that should have an oral history, but this is what it feels like to work at Acuity. You would think a programming shop that has existed since the 1950s would have better documentation for their programs and such, but you would be sorely wrong. The amount of times I have been told "you would not have known this, I forgot to tell you." Why! Why would I have not known this? Why is this information that I am learning the first WEEK on the job not readily available! Furthermore, half this information was about insurance. I understand that it is an insurance company and some knowledge will be required. However, the details of how the rate age is calculated from a circular based that sometimes is based on endorsement state and sometimes based on form state are not details I should have to know! And if anything, this information should be located SOMEWHERE accessible by me, a programmer. I should not have to call an underwriter or whatever to explain things to me because my TRAINER barely understands what he is explaining to me. I have many other issues about this company such as barely having any system design lifecycle, no version control outside of documenting changes on a text document, and more.

Don't get me wrong. This is a good company that cares about it employees. That are many great benefits. However, if you are looking for a "proper" programming shop to work in, THIS IS NOT IT.

Great, amazing entry level place. 
But the company is VERY flat - no room for advancement. 
VPs are the ones who make all the decisions, called "stakeholders."
Even General Managers (right under VP) do not act with authority.

This means, projects run slowly.  Meetings do not result in decisions until the VPs (stakeholders) have time to make decisions.  

The average age here is 23 years old.  So, coming into Acuity with experience is not something the place is used to.  Little open-mindedness to trying things new. Experience elsewhere is stone-walled with "Well, that's not the Acuity way." ...instead of even a moment to consider how a new approach might work.

The culture is amazing & friendly. Lots of work events, gifts, fun times.  The medical will save your family thousands, even a healthy family.  

Get here early. Have 10 years patience to be at a stable, great company. But don't try to finish out your career here and expect it to move any faster than those who have worked 6 months after college.

SLOW, SLOW pace. If you are used to a 50 hour work week and 300 emails. Get used to the stress of 7 emails, two meetings, and people asking you if you think you could have something done in the next 2-3 weeks.  Those of you that love that, great. Those of you from my generation will understand that lack of progress and being bored can be stressful!  Seeming ambitious or enthusiastic is not a plus here. It's viewed as aggressive or pushy.

Company itself really values employees and is always making us feel appreciated, which is very encouraging. Our department, however, has very high turnover compared to the rest of the company with people leaving for other departments, and I now understand why. We are continually getting more significant and additional responsibilities and tasks without changes to our productivity quotas except every two years, and without any type of changes to our job title or pay grade. Everyone lives in fear of being fired if they don’t make the productivity goals, and it drives people to work in a very “every man for himself” mentality where others are thrown under the bus and those with integrity’s numbers suffer because they are actually doing everything we’re supposed to do, where others skip the big, complicated, difficult items that take long because it will negatively impact their productivity. It’s very sad in a company that has such a great COMPANY culture can have such a poor DEPARTMENT culture. Especially under the Services umbrella of departments in general unfortunately, I’ve heard a lot of similar things. I’m going to continue to do the best I can with honesty and integrity and if my numbers aren’t good enough as a result and they no longer want me as an employee, at least I will know for myself that I did the best I could and it is their loss. 

Acuity has been successful because they believe in treating employees well so employees will treat agents and policyholders well. Leadership includes all employees in corporate strategic planning - the vision is never a surprise. The company is always evolving to stay current and there is much going on in all areas at all times. Consultants are brought in to bring fresh perspective and highlight areas the company needs to evolve. Acuity provides 8-12% into employees' 401ks, even if the employee is contributing $0 themselves. They pay a generous portion of health care and employees have low premiums. They give gifts throughout the year including Amazon gift cards, snacks, and other gifts. Generous raises are given, even in tough markets.

Though the company has wonderful perks and benefits, this department was the absolute worst job I have ever had. The system is awful and makes changes to your input on accounts, making you micromanage the system to guarantee things are entered correctly. The leads are always too busy to assist, errors are counted the same regardless of the severity (though it depends on who you are with the very apparent favoritism whether you get a pass or not in your mistakes) and because you don't punch in or out you are taken advantage of by easily working more than you are getting paid for. I would never recommend working in this department. I have been told other areas are better, but it is so hard to move around that it is not worth the stress of staying. I was so excited to be part of this company and so sad to have found myself so miserable. I have never felt so unsupported in any job than I had here. I really hope something changes but I don't see that happening as most of the managers and higher leads have been in their positions for 5+ years and do not seem to take any advice or are willing to try anything outside of their approved scope.

Except for a few areas of rot, this is, overall, a very good company to work for. The actual salary is about average for the industry, but the company is generous with the fringe benefits including 401K and HSA contributions, bonuses, regular (bi-weekly at minimum) company-wide appreciation events and perks. They are growing and, as a whole, really have an employee-centric focus. There are many exciting things on the horizon for Acuity. The CEO would be well served to seek out and pay attention to the writing on the wall in a couple of departments, and amputate a few short-sighted, rotten limbs from his management tree that tarnish the image he has worked so hard to create.

Acuity continues to raise the bar on treating employees the right way. All companies were tested in 2020 with the landscape of work changing and Acuity didn't miss a beat. We immediately started working from home and had the technology to do so. They sent us frequent gifts to our homes so we knew they were thinking of us...In the over 20 year history of the current CEO we have had zero layoffs, which is comforting as an employee, especially last year. The benefits are outstanding and are one reason I never want to leave. 10% 401(k) contributions, no-match required. HSA contributions every year along with low premiums and minimal out of pocket. Pay has been competitive and benefits take the entire package above and beyond expectations. Most importantly for me, I enjoy the people I work with. It feels like a family, and it did from day 1 for me. 

Working at Acuity was a privilege. The culture and work-life balance were excellent. Leadership and managers seem to care deeply for their employees, and their benefits and compensation packages reflect that. The company-organized events were some of the first I'd ever enjoyed at a place of employment.   

Acuity really is a good place to work and leadership (particularly the C.E.O.) has created a great culture for employees.  However, the company is very flat in their organizational structure which has prevented them from exploring new areas of growth/innovation and significantly limits advancement outside of core functions (i.e., underwriting and claims).  


Very few employers are as employee-focused as Acuity is. The work-life balance is excellent, and there's a culture where leadership supports new ideas. The company gets a lot of praise for its perks (free gym, ferris wheel, cafeteria, PTO, etc), but I think my manager and team have been my favorite part about the work here. After working in other roles in other organizations, I can say that Acuity really stands out as a top-tier employer.
