American Health Marketplace

The American Health Marketplace, services clients in enrollment of health insurance through the marketplace of varrious carriers and multiple states. 

We were provided systems and leads to work with, along with background information on the types of leads we are converting. You're allowed to use your own personal equipment as your see fit, as long as it is compatable with the company's software systems.

We have to constantly be inovative on how to handle, and convert these leads, while maintaining business ediquette. The infomration about our leads are always changing without notice. 

The position is performance based, and you have the opportunity to earn incentives, bonuses, and raises that reflect your performance. 

I posses skills that enables me to win the client's trust. However, due to phone connection delays, it was a challenge to keep the client on the phone for the first 3 seconds. 

I did enjoy our team, and my fellow agents. We had good times and we share our skills and suggestions with each other. We also have spiffs and rewards weekly to award agents who've reached goals and beyond. 

But even so, I couldnt shake off this feeling of being micromanaged in great detail through out my shifts. Even if you have to leave early due to a family emergency, such action will go against your attendance. Even after you've informed ahead of time, and provided documentation of your absence. Which resulting of me not taking any PTO or vacations. 

I was feeling very burned out, and couldn't recover well enough to maintain my momentum as a sale agent. As a aresult, my performance suffered, and was not able to apply our couching sessions, and trainings to it's full potential. 

Though, management did create a safe work enviroment where you can freely communicate your needs and concerns with them, and they will provide you the support you need, however; it comes at a cost. 

It wasn't until later, when I realized that the cost, was more than what I was able and willing to pay. I have clinical depression, and my parents are elderly and need a lot of care. At times, I have to step out to tend to not only to their needs, but my owm mental health needs. 

I've expressed my concerns, and even provided documentation to support my situation, along with communicating with the manager on duty ahead of time. Still, my absence due to my situation(s) was counted against me. 

Other than that, it was a great place to work. I've enjoyed my time there, and estabilished connections with my clients, of whom I've converted into a sale when other agents have failed. 

Despite my accomplishments, I knew deep down that this position wasn't for me, however; I did the best I could to make the best of it and gain as much skills, and experience as I can. 

This department is a challenging workplace that requires strong self-management and a high tolerance for ambiguity. Interpersonal dynamics within management significantly influence the environment, which can negatively impact morale, collaboration, and professional development.

While the experience can be valuable for building compliance and quality assurance knowledge, the pace, structure, and level of organizational support may not be sustainable for everyone. Quality Assurance roles are best suited for individuals early in their compliance careers or those who are comfortable operating under pressure with minimal guidance, ongoing ambiguity, and frequently shifting expectations that are not communicated or documented clearly.

There are serious concerns regarding advancement and internal mobility. Career progression appears limited, particularly for remote employees and those outside the organization’s preferred geographic area, regardless of performance. Advancement pathways lack transparency, and internal movement outside of QA is uncommon.

Additionally, the organization’s approach to diversity and inclusion appears narrow and inconsistently applied across teams and leadership levels. The organization frequently makes unclear and inconsistent decisions about promotion and role changes, resulting in growth opportunities that feel inequitable for those outside perceived favored groups.

Prospective employees should carefully consider whether they are comfortable with limited clarity, perceived favoritism, constrained advancement opportunities, and a workplace culture that would benefit significantly from stronger leadership practices, broader inclusivity, and improved structural maturity. Despite C-level leadership’s attempts to implement changes, longstanding management issues remain unaddressed, limiting the effectiveness of those efforts. Compensation and raises for non-sales roles also trend toward the lower end of national market benchmarks.

*A Typical day at work 
A typical work day for me  at AHM starts with logging into my company provided equipment by 9:00am EST . After logging in, I check my email, and calendar for the day because there is most likely additional training available. After that I start taking calls . At 9:45 join the rest of my department in a morning meeting . Every day has a theme for the meeting like Monday is Motivation , Wednesday is Wellness , Thursday is teams etc. I live for these meetings. After the meeting I go back to the phone , provided I have no scheduled training I stay on the phone until my 15 minute break and again until my 1 hour lunch . Wrapping things up around 6:00pm EST 

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED 
I have learned quite a bit about ACA and ancillary plans . Laws , how to enroll etc. However  my skills in selling have developed tremendously after only being here for 7 months. The training classes they offer are not only  informative but have also helped me come out of my shell . At first I didn't understand or even agree with their methods , but now I get it . And it works . 

MANAGEMENT 
Management is cool, I will say  although I've not done much to deserve it, they have been more than generous with their patience and grace for me. So I am grateful . That's just kind of who they are . Aside from my own personal experience the way it seems is if you come in and do what they are paying you to do they don't have a problem. Aside from the zoom policy , I have days that I feel like i am self employed. However there is always leadership available if needed . 

WORKPLACE CULTURE
I really don't know what this means, we're insurance agents who want to help as many people get coverage in every way that matters !

As a current employee who's been with American Health Marketplace for nearly two years, I can confidently say this is THE BEST company I’ve worked for in my 13+ year career in the insurance industry, and the J-O-B-S previous to that. Every day at work feels like a chance to grow and improve. A typical day starts with clear direction and positive energy from leadership, which sets the tone for the rest of the shift. I’m given the tools I need to succeed, and there’s always someone willing to help if I have questions or need support.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is how much of an impact good leadership makes. My managers not only give feedback—they encourage me to challenge myself and keep pushing forward. I’ve developed stronger communication skills, become more confident in my role, and learned the importance of teamwork and accountability.
The workplace culture is one of the best parts of the job. It’s positive, respectful, and uplifting. Everyone works hard, but there’s also laughter, support, and a real sense of community. You’re not just a number here—you’re treated like a valued member of the team.
The hardest part of the job is managing time during especially busy days. When things get hectic, it can be a challenge to juggle multiple responsibilities at once. But with support from management and coworkers, even the busiest days are manageable.
The most enjoyable part of the job is the people. From coworkers to supervisors, everyone brings something unique and positive to the table. I leave work feeling fulfilled and appreciated—and that’s not something every job offers.


This company does not care about your progression.  Every member of management has an ugly attitude toward the employees and treat them like a nuisance and like children.  They didnt take any time to teach me the things i needed to know the year and a half i was there. They barely knew how to do things themselves including the overwhelming amount of paycheck discrepancies you have to put in.  The company is not organized at all. It is a waste of time and I didnt make any extra money during open enrollment which is really sad because when I got the job I was so excited.  The company treats the employees bad and after training they tell you everything you were taught is incorrect.  The upper managemnt does not care about you or your progression in the company but instead just treat you like another number here today gone tomorrow.  It was the worst company I have ever worked for and the pay is terrible.  Even though they offer a decent hourly rate thier commission scale is terrible for the plans.  I was making very little money with this company which absolutely blind sided me because I was told I was going to be making a lot of money especially during open enrollment and I made very very little.  They dont teach you how to do things and you are left in the dark most of the time.  And if you have any questions they give you negative feedback about yourself and have very bad attitudes and it was just  a terrible experience. 

I’ve had the distinct privilege of working with American Health Marketplace since November 2018, and I can say with complete confidence that this company has not only shaped my career but has continually inspired my growth.
I began my journey here as a licensed insurance sales agent and, through hard work, mentorship, and unwavering support from leadership, progressed into several key roles: Sales Manager, Mentorship Manager, Squad Leader—where I had the opportunity to lead a team of managers and agents—and now serve proudly as the Manager of Remediation and Continuing Education.

AHM is a company that upholds strong core values, with a commitment to inclusivity. The organization promotes a healthy work-life balance and strives to maintain a positive workplace culture. 

The leadership structure includes Managers, Supervisors, and Team Leads, and there are high expectations for agent performance—particularly during low-volume periods such as SEP. The work environment can feel closely monitored and stressful.
Supervisors/managers  are actively involved in coaching and overseeing performance, which includes real-time feedback during calls. While this can be helpful, it may also be distracting. Additionally, agents are required to be on full video during Zoom meetings, which is  a reasonable expectation, although supervisors do not consistently adhere to this standard themselves. Experiences with supervisors  vary. While many are supportive and fair, there are instances where you may be micromanaged or singled out—especially if your performance is not meeting expectations. Managers will complete extensive documentation and monitoring leading to your dismissal by HR.  It can feel as though support from upper management is reserved primarily for top-performing agents and the mangers clique.

Overall, AHM offers a values-driven environment with growth opportunities, but it’s important to be prepared for a high-performance culture and close supervision once training concludes.



 I have a unique appreciation for how this company operates — both on the ground and at the organizational level.

What stands out most is how quickly the company adapts to industry and regulatory changes. In an evolving healthcare landscape, especially one as complex as insurance and compliance, the company stays ahead of the curve. Leadership makes informed, timely decisions and provides the tools and guidance needed to keep teams aligned with current standards and best practices.

The organization is incredibly well-run, with processes that reflect both legal awareness and operational efficiency. This not only benefits the company but also gives employees confidence that they're part of something both ethical and impactful.

The work-life balance is healthy, the pay is competitive, and senior management is professional, approachable, and supportive. The company culture is strong and genuine — it starts from the top and sets a tone of respect, inclusion, and continuous improvement across the board.

My experience working with American Health Marketplace was ultimately disappointing due to ongoing operational and communication issues. While the position initially appeared well-structured, the reality did not consistently align with what was presented during onboarding.

One of the most concerning issues was the handling of licensing. Licenses were purchased on behalf of employees, yet in some cases they could not be effectively used for the work being assigned. This created unnecessary financial and professional frustration and reflected a lack of coordination and transparency within the organization.

Additionally, communication was often unclear or inconsistent. Expectations, processes, and performance standards changed frequently without adequate explanation or support, making it difficult to succeed or plan for growth. There was also limited clarity around advancement opportunities and long-term development.

The role did provide exposure to the health insurance industry and helped build experience in customer-facing work. However, the lack of structure, consistent leadership, and practical support outweighed these benefits.

Overall, American Health Marketplace may suit individuals who are comfortable navigating disorganization and frequent change, but those seeking clear communication, ethical operational practices, and stable professional development may find the experience challenging.
