American Water Works Association

The association is passionate about the goal of providing safe and clean drinking water to populations world wide. The biggest issue is that the culture and processes seem so mired in tradition and red tape that any attempts to move forward, especially in management and technology methodologies that each step forward is painful and slow.

The excuse, "we don't have time to learn that" has been spread around far too much and is given more weight than credible. Things have been getting better with an influx of new blood, but by the time I left, the software dev division was still struggling to adapt to a structured project intake plan.

The people who work there are wonderfully friendly and eager to help, but reluctant to change. This causes project bottlenecks, pet projects being directly assigned to people, and causes frustration on all ends.

Management at the director level and above need to take a hard look at internal processes and think about how to address an evolving workforce and labor market. AWWA management seems to chase off ambitious employees and instead encourages keeping things the same as they have been the last 20 years. 

Working for AWWA is definitely mission based passion because the pay isn't very good. The benefits are very good and the work/life balance is top notch. Just don't expect to get paid well and it can be hard to advance if you don't check all the boxes. They have been working on promoting within and training current employees, but its not as wide spread as I would like to see. My department has great supervisors and we are great team. Other departments seem to have a bit of turn over in recent years, but I hope that stops now that we are getting back to normal working schedules. I do love the hybrid work schedule. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Great mission and people. Good health benefits. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Don’t value salespeople or prioritize commission payouts.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Many different departments and they don’t work together at times.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sales is calling companies to offer the Associations multiple conference booths, sponsorships and advertising.

The company culture is not positive and a lot gets hidden before you join and discover the reality. Senior leaders and overall staff are hard to work with and too many meetings for very little work gets done. Accountability doesn’t exist and projects are moved around a lot and spread to staff that is not qualified to handle. Very high turnover and no real growth or interest in the mission. 

Lots of favortism, not comersurate with abilities.  If you can talk the talk then you are covered completely even if the walk is not walked.   Ideas are adopted and shoved through regardless if they better serve the needs of the membership, as long as the idea is backed by one of the chosen.   If you want to wear blinders and just do as your told it is an awesome place.

I find that AWWA is a great place to work at. Knowing that you are making an impact in the world with better water is a great feeling. I do think that pay compensation is little on the lower side but I still can't complain. Great Benefits!

A horrible place to work.  Everyone keeps their heads down out of fear and there is no sense of teamwork or extending a helping hand to someone new.  You are on your own and then criticized when you don't understand the culture or the goals of the company.

I do not feel comfortable writing this at this time. I am currently still employed at the company and i do not feel comfortable creating a narrative about the company. I can revisit this or answer this questions at another time.

This was a very enjoyable contract position. Despite being offered two months, I was asked to stay on for another two months soon after starting. Kind staff, slow paced and relaxed culture, but an effective company.
