I have worked in various settings - juvenile corrections, individual counseling, partial hospitalization programs, as well as inpatient. With this position, it is comparable to crisis management with referrals internally to medical staff or psychiatric providers. Initially, my family and friends were intimidated by me going into adult corrections but have been amazed with the change with my happiness and the safety precautions associated within the jail system. I no longer dread going to work but wake up excited to take on the day. Within all my combined settings, I have felt safest while here due to employee commitment, expectations, and overall culture. Other places I have worked, professionals had been assaulted based on the acuity where here there is ample support to address that acuity in a safe environment. Your schedule typically remains consistent and if you would have to work overtime for unforeseen situations or de-escalation needs, you are compensated appropriately.  More importantly, you are valued for your work and respected. The work life balance has been great and has been consistent with my current boundaries. I am constantly learning something new while here which is wonderful to continue expanding tools, experiences, and resources. I enjoy the patient focused care where contacting family and collateral is helpful but not the priority and instead emphasizing what the patient needs. It can be a fast paced position which I thoroughly enjoy but it is not unrealistic and if you are able to utilize time management skills and organizational techniques you can thrive. I am thankful to have the opportunity to continue growing professionally with this agency and population. I only wish there would be more continued education opportunities offered beyond the tuition reimbursement. 

I worked for them for approximately 3 years and within that time they have had an egregious amount of turn over.  The job itself is not difficult, however, Armors policies and procedures treat the employees that work for them worse than they treat the inmates we provide healthcare.  They did not give any raises for the first 3 years of employment, they are sooooo disorganized they change the scheduling on you and call and demand you come to work when you were NOT scheduled to be there,  they refuse to pay out vacation time earned (more than 40 hours) and have a use it or lose it policy, however when you try to take time off they deny your vacation (due to no available staff).  They will not allow you to sell the time you have earned back to the company if you do not take it you just lose that time and again they DENY vacation time and sometimes approve it, but retain the right (without notice) to deny previously approved vacation and will make employees a no call no show if you do not come in to work,   Employee benefits are horribly expensive for single people with NO CHILDREN the employee cost share is approximately 150.00 per pay period for little coverage and they make signing up for benefits an ordeal every open enrollment.  Providing little if any notice.  I have witnessed a large number of staff rotate in and out of the door and what is funny unreliable staff retains position and those who work are overwhelmed to the point of quitting or they blow up for being overworked and under appreciated and get fired.  I would not suggest anyone EVER work for Armor Correctional nor should any corrections facility agree to be in business with Armor their record speaks for itself,  They have been terminated at almost every facility they were in contract with.  This company is NOT one any person should want to be employed by or affiliated with.  I do not see how those in management can sleep and knowingly uphold policies that  exploits the employees under them.  

I make it my top priority to see that case management is done well and efficiently. My career has also seen its share of achievements; while working as a Case Manager at Armor Correctional Health Services Inc. Develop and update a referral network of available housing resources, treatment programs, etc. in the community. Provide discharge-planning, assist patients in developing goals and treatment plans in their area of need. Evaluate effectiveness of care plan and patient's progress. Facilitate groups and provide one on one services to the patient.
I believe myself to be an excellent case manager during my time working at Armor Correctional Health Services as a case manager I have learned a great deal and achieved a number of goals. One of my highest achievements was when I located a grant for inmates ages 18-24 with no High School Diploma or GED a chance to obtain their GED and a trade as well. This led to all of the inmates participating in the program  receiving their Diplomas and 5 receiving jobs once they were released, which in turn Armor Correctional Health Services will have first priority when the grant come up again.

I found it interesting and unique as there was never a job like it and praise the Lord there shouldn't be.  Read your job manuals because someone should and it is essential.  There is always room for you to grow and at times it's asked of you; If one refuses the request then it will be demanded of you. It may feel like juggling knives, chain saws while holding an apple in ones mouth. So don't do it.
Don't permit administration to push you around.  Stand your ground and communication via email is best so that there is always a paper trail. The day consisted of patient assessment and education of the prisoners.  This was the best part because they appreciated the medical care.  Lab work request according to medical condition. The pay is poor and as nurses we should demand respectful pay wages that reflect the hazardous conditions and responsibility along with ones experience. Remember it is a prison and that self care and safety are important. Never compromise your safety and don't do anything outside of your scope of practice. Don't do anything that will ever compromise your integrity or license.   Lastly remember the Stanford experiment and remain a patient advocate without compromise.

If your in a leadership position then you may be treated with a little dignity. The management is like a dictatorship , if you are a RN, LPN, Med. Tech , secretary etc you have no value to Armor. The hardest part of the job was watching the moral of my Co workers drop.  The most enjoyable part of the job was ( celebrating  with co workers who found new employment). They have a poor benefits package with extremely high cost health insurance . ($800 + for a family).  They are a for profit company and are self serving . The staff is  treated with no dignity and often  feels bullied in meetings they talk down to you or at you . Most companies value their nurses opinion  and want to work as a team  , not at Armor. Their inexperienced leadership staff will make sure of that. Most of my Co workers are actively seeking other employment  or have a 2nd job that they can fall back on . Armor prefers new graduates nurses because they can pay them  lower wages  and manipulate them. Almost all of the staff consist of new nurses all of the experienced staff  was fired  for nonsensicle reasons the others saw the trend and guit. They are constantly recruiting all the time because the turner over rate is very high. APPLY HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Good company to work for in terms of compensation.  I don't really feel like Armor truly knows what is going on behind the scenes in these facilities that they are contracted to provide medical care in.  Management isn't great at all.  All they need is a warm body in management positions, no experience required or any leadership capabilities.  Nurses quit managers, they don't quit companies.  If there's a high turnover rate with nurses then corporate should be asking questions.  Everywhere is short staffed in the nursing field, but with the great pay at Armor there should be nurses trying to get job everyday, it's not happening for a reason.  We shouldn't be asked or expected to work 5-6 days when we're already working 12 hour shifts.  We're burnt out and we do not have enough staff to fill these shifts, but Armor has done nothing about this in months.  It's not okay to work 60-72 hours in one week, yet I see other nurses doing this because they're begged to. Management makes it known how they feel about you if you don't pick up extra shifts.  
Their health benefits are very expensive, hope you don't need insurance.
Armor definitely needs some tweaking to their management. 

Frustrating more times than not. People sitting behind a desk telling those who show up everyday how to do the job. It is very frustrating being there in the trenches and being told how to work from people who don’t and haven’t worked the floor.  They are so far from reality with their expectations that it is very hard to ever think you’ve done well or even do well some days. If you are a conscientious employee you’re basically screwed. Duties will just topple on top of each other while they ignore the magnitude of deficiencies in other employees. It is a real morale buster when they celebrate or ignore bad behaviors and don’t ever acknowledge those that give 100%. They are constantly changing the name of the game and ignore employees requests for help. The “it is what it is” mentality is an unfair tool they use. Covid made this job even harder which has been across the board but some of their tyrannical choices really were over the top. You’re reminded that you aren’t paid for suggestions. Do it their way or no way. There are many security and medical relationships that shouldn’t influence the right way of doing things but at this site it happens every day.  It is a very unhealthy environment to be in. 

Correctional Medicine is an interesting setting. It promotes a lot of independence for a nurse practitioner who is willing to learn and not afraid of new challenges. Never a dull moment. A quiet day can turn into a chaos in a split second. Mostly primary care in an institutional setting with nursing care 24 hr/day. More acute patients are monitored in the infirmary when IV medications, treatments ... can be provided.
 People often refer to this particular population as "outlaws", but in a lot of ways, jail can be reformative. A Nurse Practitioner can function interchangeably  as a medical provider, a social worker, a minister, a counselor, a teacher and more, depending of the patient's presentation. That is why I often refer to my job as a ministry. 

The hardest part of my job is being on call one week/month 24hr/day. Some weeks are better than others. It's not easy to be awake the next day when one has been called for orders all night.

Working at Armor Health has been an enriching experience. During my tenure, I've successfully recruited nurses for five different facilities, collaborating with exceptional leaders to ensure optimal staffing. Matching the right person to the role has been immensely rewarding. While working in a correctional facility may not be for everyone it is not what most think!  Correctional officers prioritize our nurses' safety above all else. For those well-suited, a career in corrections can be incredibly fulfilling.  We encourage all of our staff to engage HR for any leadership-related concerns and it is disheartening to know some have left without voicing their concerns first.  HR is genuinely committed to the welfare of our staff, striving to rectify any issues and ensure a positive work environment for all employees

Do not work here if you actually care about your role as a nurse. Whatever issue you bring to management gets ignored & then you get blamed for having a bad attitude for being upset about zero changes being made. Beware of their “specialty” roles because there’s nothing special about it. You’ll constantly get pulled to the floor which will put you behind on your priority role. Management here SUCKS!! By far thee worst company I’ve ever worked for. Armor is a complete joke. They’re always having a staffing crisis & whenever you speak up about it, they always lie & say they have people in orientation. On site management just sits in their office, avoiding whatever issues &/or concerns their staff has & corporate just ignores your emails. Oh & they lie about bonuses. They only pay certain people certain amounts, the rest of the staff gets crumbs.. if they’re lucky. Overall,  If you thrive in chaos, unorganized mess, toxicity, & short staffing then this place will be perfect for you!
