Assisted Home Health & Hospice

I love the hands on, one patient to nurse ratio.  I started this job after working for a SNF....so I was relieved at the LACK of stress on the job.  IT CAN BE  A LOT of work, don't get me wrong, but manageable, time wise. It is true- if you really like giving one on one nursing care -this is a great opportunity for you to make a difference in the patient and for their family if you want to.  Once you pick up a case  (mine is Mon-Fri, 2-10p), you pretty much are the main nurse for that pt.  Most are evenings and weekends, as the main population is peds and they go to school during the week.  The work is steady in that sense. However, if the pt does go into the hospital, you are then relying on staff to give you another shift temporarily...sometimes this happens.  I have not minded the occasional day or two off - so for me this was not a problem.  Actually many times I have worked 50 plus hours to cover other shifts on cases where the main nurse was not available.  The down side is lack of communication from staffers to the nurses and the pts parents.  If you ask for a day off it is very likely that the pt's family will suffer...many work while you are home with their child.  The pay is between $16.50-$19.00 here in CA.  You will work mainly with G-tubes, Trachs, cerebral palsy, COPD, many Quads, total ADL's if not partial.  Training is not always given-though is it promised. I have found that as long as I keep the case I am on, show up do my work, don't ask for much time off, am satisfied with the pay and repetitive skill set, give the care I love to give and be a good nurse-all is good.  Not a lot of variety in "nursing skills."  You can be proficient easily in this type of work but you will not be using a lot that you learned in school. The majority of pt's are stable, you job is maintaining stability, they go to the Dr. or ER for the rest.

The company talks a good game and the nurses are good.  However, I did notice that they do hire nurses FRESH out of nursing school, WITH ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE!  I met a nurse personally who was new and out of school, with no previous experience.  She was hired for hospice, then they moved her to home health without notice.  The company is run like a 'mom and pop" shop.  They tell you they don't mess with pay, but they do.  

This company also does not like when people have brains and utilize them.  The company does not focus on the best interests of the patients, they care ONLY about the numbers, no matter what they say.  They speak a good line, but then don't uphold what they say.  The leadership is weak, full of gossip and unprofessional behaviors.  

There is a lot of micro management here and an uncomfortable work environment.

After dedicating 6 years of excellent service to this hospice agency, I was deeply disappointed to experience a sudden and unexplained not getting shifts assignments anymore. They don't seem to value loyal caregivers anymore. The HR was so unprofessional - I kept getting bounced around to new staffing coordinators and most of them we're new and didnt give me good hours or recognize my experiences. The case managers would get upset and even label me as "unreliable" if I was unavailable for a last minute shift. The staff was got greedy , they we're dismissive and unprofessional from management and I'm deeply saddened.

DON'T do it. The Phoenix office is poorly run, in both home health and hospice. Pay structure is one of the worst in the area. Manager of hospice lacks knowledge, marketers unable to bring in business, no benefits. Benefits attached to productivity, but they control your caseload so you may lose benefits due to lack of productivity. Lack of communication between staff and a lot of conflict, turnover, and a web of mismanagement. Sadly, it affects the patients the most. They lose most of their business to other hospices. They have an incompetent Director and upper management and human resources in California are protective of their bottom line, "make money, don't support employees." Home Health staff are leaving, and patients have left too. There are better companies for patients and insurance agents to.choose from!

During the pandemic there was no oversight or switch to work from home. There was little organization in the administrative office - too many people multi-tasking. Zero work/life balance unless you are Management who consistently took vacations especially during crucial times. Culture of the company is to work perfectly or get management consistently working over your shoulder. Very little support given to office staff. HOWEVER -- the people that DO work there are hardworking, amazing individuals who deeply care about the work they do and the care they give to patients. People who work in the office bend over backwards to help others in the office when its time to step in, many amazing relationships/long term friendships made.

The department I worked in was toxic. Instead of the supervisor supporting staff, being fair and solving conflicts,  my supervisor contributed to the confusion by gossiping and gaslighting. The confusion started from the top management down. The top mangement never gave clear direction and constantly contradicted themselves. No one was working together for a common goal because we were all told something different. Goals and expectations changed constantly with no rhyme or reason. Company did not work as one unit. Too much drama amongst coworkers- If you did not fit in with the select group of favored coworkers,  you were an outcast. It did not matter if you did your job by the book. If someone in the clique did not like you, you would be reprimanded regardless if what was said was true or not. My direct supervisor is no longer working there, so it may be a more fair, inclusive environment now. 

Stay away from employment with Assisted. Very disorganized and cut throat environment. Zero employee loyalty. I was let go from employment with Assisted because I did not have an assignment in last 6 months, although I did work for Assisted the first 5 months of same year. I was told to reapply as a new employee. I did reapply but was never contacted. I worked for Assisted from 2013 until 2017, but the assignments were few and far between. I did work long term assignments when given, longest being 9 months, without ever missing a day.  Schedulers will not work with employee on available hours or available work locations. The schedulers have been replaced on a frequent basis. It is a struggle to try and get work hours with Assisted. I have moved on to a better Agency.

No matter how desperate you are for a job, or how annoyed you may be at your current position, there are some companies you’re better off not working for. Even if the money is slightly above average of VN/RN min hourly rate in CA, the role seems irresistible, and even your friends say it’s worth a shot, accepting a role at unreliable company can set your career back and even jeopardize your future success. This company is definitely one of the bad apples in the basket. This company promise you their "Guarantee 36 hrs/week" but won’t deliver on their promises and may just be a waste of time that can cause you a major financial setback. If you want to give a try, be my quest. But make sure to hold on to your other job (if does not contradict your working schedule)

This company was initially great to work for. However, even during the best times the office environment was toxic. With very few exceptions there is unprofessional behavior from administrative staff and gossiping. I tried to go into the office as little as possible. You do get flexibility in your schedule and patients you can take but they will exploit you to try and do more visits because they are chronically understaffed. Turnover is high with many nurses quitting within the first few weeks. One big bonus of this company though is that they are contracted with United Health Care so you can get many patients in a small radius allowing you to reduce drive times compared to other companies. 

The management in this company is absolutely hideous! They only care about money when they should be caring about their employees more. The employees are the ones  that work to generate that money. Management has their heads so far up there but they don't even know if it's day or night. You are a nobody unless you are in a click. Management will harass you and there is no recourse. HR Will stab you in the back faster than you can blink your eyes if your voice a complaint.  Overpriced insurance available for full-time only. Don't expect to put your family on the insurance however. To put your family on you might as well take out a second mortgage! It was cheaper to get everyone their own plans!
