BAYADA Home Health Care

I first was employed with Bayada in February of 2021. Starting pay was decent, still higher than minimum wage. When I started working in the field, I had a client who I adored. We went into the community and I assisted them with their needs, followed their care plan, provided safety, and supervised them while out and about, but mainly let them be as independent as possible. We always had a great time, however it was only for a few hours a day, which did not add up to full time and wasnt worth the commute. I ended up picking a few more clients up throughout the week to make a full schedule. Which was even more rough on the gas.  I lived in Benton PA at the time and it was an unideal commute as it took me a minimum of 30 minutes to the nearest client. I do not recommend living in Benton and working for this company, unless you are able to make the commute without struggling. They have offices all over and I'd say as long as you don't live in a desolate area, your commute to your clients home will be reasonable. The management  staff were alright. No one micromanaged your work, however they would do visits to the client in home and sometimes come visit while you're there to make sure both client and staff are comfortable. Aside from that they don't bother you. I had no issues with scheduling, or payroll, or administrative problems on their end. I ended up relocating  to the Poconos in late 2021 and they didnt have any cases near my new residence so I had to wait. I worked for a different company at the same time as well and ended up picking more hours up with the other company. Eventually Bayada had a case almost 8 months later 40 minutes from where I lived and I went back to their office in Wilkes Barre from the Poconos, for my annual training and They recertified me in BLS/CPR/AED and First Aid. They ran my background checks, fingerprints, state clearance and criminal back ground check and they put me on a case. I ended up starting college a fall of 2022 and couldn't work as many hours so I resigned from the other company i worked for, to just work for Bayada, but Bayada ended up pulling me off the case anyway to put someone in that could work more hours. They told me they would let me know as soon as they have a case available that coincides with my class schedule and never did. I reached out to them quite a few times seeking a case, as i was out of work being i resigned from the other job, and no one bothered to answer my calls, or email me even to let me know they don't have work. They pulled me from the case and didn't talk to me again. Basically terminated my employment without even letting me know. I ended up finding a new employment opportunity elsewhere but the fact they did that and said nothing to me was more than unprofessional and morally wrong. 

I have read many of the reviews on here and most seem to be from those actually providing the care.  I work in one of the Support Offices (Corporate offices) and I would not recommend working in the Parsippany, NJ office.  While I genuinely feel the company cares about its clients, I don't feel it cares about its employees.  My office has a "high school" mentality where you need to make sure you "fit in" or else working there will be miserable.  

The Directors clearly pay favorites and will only promote those they favor and who are "in" with them.  This has resulted in a work environment where the majority of the Division is unhappy...and yet, the Directors and Division Director choose to do nothing about it.  They prefer the "head in the sand" approach rather than addressing the real issues.  If you show you are unhappy, they will throw you to curb.  Bayada practice is to fire someone on the spot without any advance warning.  Often times they will just say "you don't fit in" and that "it's best you part ways with Bayada".  Talk about professional!

This Division also does not have advancement opportunities.  They will only promote those they favor, who are often times people that have been with the company for years.  It doesn't matter what degrees you have or prior work experiences, they only care about your time at Bayada.  This is actually their business approach, not pure speculation.  

Also, this Division is not open to change.  They run things the same way they have run them for the past 20+ years, despite employees saying certain changes would improve their work morale.  For instance, it's 2014 and there isn't a need to come into the office during hurricanes and blizzards, but that is something we were told "will NEVER change".  And if you do suggest change, they view this as you being unhappy with the company and will kick you to the curb (see above),

The pay and benefits are appalling!  Just look at all the reviews and you will see an overall theme that the pay and benefits are low.  The entire company does a satisfaction survey where this is always a constant issue, so the President/Owner is aware and yet he doesn't seem to want to address it.  We are the people putting the millions in his pocket each year, so for him to continue to reduce pay and raise benefit costs, all while he gets richer, is pretty "scrooge-like".  While I think the President/Owner is a decent person, I think the all mighty dollar sometimes clauts his abilities to show compassion to his employees.  If the company truly believes its employees are "its greatest asset" then, perhaps, the President/Owner could dip into his pocket and pay people more and provide cheaper benefits.

Bayada's mission is admirable and filled with individuals who, as a whole, want to provide the best care they can for clients.  Bayada is not immune to general challenges in healthcare (i.e. high turnover and staffing challenges) and success as a mid-level leader is very market/practice dependent.  They tend to compete within itself for hiring, oftentimes without making supervisors aware that their reports have applied internally. 

Senior leadership and support staff are hit or miss for the support provided --  do not depend on follow through and expect to get guidance that will be contradicting (i.e. operational policies contradict guidance from legal department which contradicts with compliance policies, ect).  The company totes everyone as a team player but that philosophy tends to be a façade ending at upper management and  you typically dont experience it again until corporate leadership steps in.  Directors and their service offices are stretched very thin.  The enterprise is segmented, top heavy, with a ton of overhead, which limits the rates of direct care staff  ultimately limiting service offices from remaining competitive within their industry. They have an under utilized customer care center and the expectation is that the office handles all incoming calls (it can at times give off a busy call center vibe).

Beware of their benefits.  Their coverage is sub-par and can be expensive.  Their separation policy is interesting as well. If you separate in good standing, PTO is paid out but all service office staff are required to provide 4 weeks notice. Most companies will have coverage end on the last day of month of separation.  Bayada however will terminate coverage the Monday following your last shift worked regardless of termination status.  You need to request an exit interview, if not requested you do not get one.  For a company that outwardly expresses desire for constructive feedback automatically conducting exit interviews for all exiting employees at least at the office level and above would demonstrate a true investment in their employees.

Note to company: Offer better benefits for office and direct care staff and ensure that more than corporate leadership and service offices are genuine in following the mission and core values.

The company’s job is to sell itself as being a dream come true for it’s employees AND clients. People who need these services don’t have a whole lot of options available to them. I have worked for the same office on and off over the past 8 years. There is a high turnover in the office itself. In fact, I think only 2 case managers are still there after all these years. The case managers are overwhelmed with case loads. The newer ones I’ve come across have been less than satisfactory in job performance and have no qualms with making clients and employees feel inferior. I don’t mind the mandatory inservices because I like being prepared for whatever challenges may come, but as previously stated in an earlier review, CNA’s or HHA don’t provide much nursing. It is easy to feel like we are merely babysitters and maids because the tasks may seem mundane or redundant. However, I feel like I offer more. An ear to listen when the parents are stressed beyond most of our comprehension, a hug to let them know they can find the strength to get through another day. Being a decent human being, and genuinely caring, not because I get paid to, but because it is who I am and what I believe in. 
I do not receive any benefits through Bayada. Location of clientele is a major factor to think about before taking cases. If you have been a CNA for a long time, it is hands down better than working in any nursing home or hospital. I have done so many fun activities in the community with clients such as going to restaurants, movies, shopping, go cart riding, just to name a few, all while “working” and never had to pay for anything out of my pocket. It’s not always sunshine and rainbows though. I have been bitten, punched, scratched, kicked, etc. due to behavioral issues with some clients. You gotta take the bad with the good. Besides, I don’t know any CNA’s who make a ton of money, but I do know I don’t work as hard as I did in any facility for roughly the same hourly pay.

Bayada Raleigh, is a very supportive home health culture that makes you feel valued and appreciated as an employee. Other offices like Wilmington do so as well, and what I love about Bayada is that if there is a need and you are willing, you can cover a broad territory and cover many hours in home health. 
In a thriving office like this one, they have a good reputation and are well sought after for clients, so they will tailor your schedule just as you like, and you chose the clients and level of complexity according to what you like and your competency clearances, which are done in the office. 

It’s great if you desire flexibility of scheduling, day, evening or night, what days you want to work, or need to take off. I have worked in many roles throughout my nursing career, hospital, office, managed care, and home health. This particular role is one of the most rewarding, satisfying, stress- free ( very important for your longevity!) and peaceful roles I have experienced, and I enjoy it very much. 

I would recommend this for a nurse that has at least a year or 2 of nursing, because you want to have some sense of second nature response to decompensation; you don’t want to think just because it’s home care it’s easy: You want to know that in an emergency, those nursing instincts will kick in and you will calmly know what to do to intervene, possibly even preventing the need for hospitalization. Of course, there is training and skills labs, and you can even go to the office to work on skills you feel you don’t practice often. But overall, it’s good to see the expectations even if you are a new grad and speak with a recruiter and Nurse Manager as well, to see if they have any special training or mentoring for New grads, if it is needed or required.

To start, I did not feel set up for success. There isn't any real training for the position and others don't have the time to properly train due to monstrous workloads. I felt without a real understanding of my role until I had done something wrong and was scolded for it. I felt my position being threatened if I had ever made a mistake, even if I didn't know I was responsible for a certain task.
I did not feel support from my coworkers or the higher-ups and often felt as though bottom dollar was what they were after, despite many efforts to voice ethical concern. By the end of it, I was responsible for doing other people's jobs on top of a tremendous caseload. Even when you're drowning, you're expected to get over it and add more work to your pile. Work-life balance was terrible, as I felt the expectation was to be available during all non-working hours, PTO, etc. I was getting calls in the middle of the night, weekends, and holidays. I felt little understanding for PTO for big family special occasions or even during inclement weather when there are emergencies. You're still expected to be there. 
I was one of very few Client Services Managers in my office and there were many times where I couldn't take a break, be out of the office on client visits, etc. if my counter-part was out that day. Be prepared to be tethered to a desk all day.
I constantly felt as if there needed to be more people will full time positions to make your work manageable. To be truthful, the work is so stressful that I couldn't fully invest in my role or connect with many people. I lasted a little over a year, with job searching most of that time. I had never been so stressed in my life and resigning had made me mentally healthier.
Please offer your employees more support and flexibility. Understand that work can be a place where they do the best they can, but they are going to make mistakes and their families and personal lives matter. Work life balance is majorly needed here.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working at the company was its stated commitment to employee support and retention. At the time, the organization appeared to value its workforce and invest in keeping employees engaged. However, those strengths were undermined by leadership decisions at the upper-management level, where questionable clinical practices were overlooked due to their profitability, ultimately impacting trust, morale, and the company’s core values.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working at the company was navigating inconsistent leadership and ethical misalignment. Employees were expected to uphold integrity and professional standards while witnessing questionable practices being overlooked for financial gain, particularly at the management level. This created moral distress, low morale, and a challenging work environment that ultimately contributed to high turnover.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment and culture were mixed. On the surface, the company promoted employee support and retention; however, the culture was significantly impacted by leadership decisions that prioritized revenue over ethics and accountability. This resulted in inconsistent management practices, diminished trust, and lowered morale, creating a stressful environment for employees who valued integrity, transparency, and professional standards.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
As a Program Manager, a typical day involved a high volume of administrative and coordination tasks, including extensive documentation and scheduling. The role also required significant travel between sites and a strong focus on outreach and relationship-building to promote the program and drive engagement.

When I finally decided I felt ready for a career move, I was hesitant to leave my skilled nursing job of 11 years. I started PRN for Bayada to see if it was a fit. Did PRN which really was regularly 10 hours a week until COVID hit. I realized that home health was the better option. 

The company is always reminding us that we need to provide excellent and compassionate care. As I have worked there, this really is true and not just corporate talk. I truly feel good that I am entrusted to give the best care possible with my clients. I have the managerial support to deal with difficult issues too. 

Doing good for clients is also rewarded here so the culture of the company encourages it. It is good to go above and beyond and push teammates to do the same. That attitude is infectious when it comes from the top down. 

I’ve also expanded my career here not only as a clinician in the field but also with special projects to improve quality of care and precept new hires. My work is always a challenge and never boring which is energizing and is inspiring to see others follow one’s lead. I love seeing my newbies get excellent feedback from clients because I know that they indeed do a good job. 

If you are looking for a therapy job that gives inspiration and want to really help your community, this is a great place to join. It does help to have a good base of knowledge and experience also so grow it before you come to home health.

I waited 20 years to make the move but it is the best decision I have made in my career thus far. I feel great giving back to my community through the work I do.

In my time with this company, I have typically had 4-6 "clients" at any given time.  I have three that I see regularily each week as well as others that I pick up as I am able.  I'm able to make my own schedule each month which is useful as a mother of three with a husband who also works.  Pay varies based on how complicated a case is ( basic care, vs trach and/or vent) and is not necessarily the highest out there but is reasonable.  My office is great about recognition of hard work and often sends out cards and "Bayada Bucks" which can be exchanged for items in a catalog.  My yearly assessments have been straightforward with a solid plan on the goal for the following year.  

My office is currently short staffed ( I suspect this is a common theme right now) and so I do get A LOT of texts and calls about open shifts that I can't always take. That can be stressful if you have trouble saying "No", but it does beat the alternative of having not enough.  

They do NOT compensate for travel time and distance and some of my assignments are an hour away from my home.  I do often get offered an incentive of a few extra dollars per hour for those particular shifts ,but that's up to the discretion of the office.  

The hardest part is that, as a home health nurse, I am doing EVERYTHING when I am there.  Therapies, treatments, transferring, changing, medications, you name it, we do it.  It's not like a hospital or facility where you have the benefit of a team on hand to handle the ADL's.  

I really enjoy that in a sense, we become a part of the patients family.  I have celebrated birthdays, holidays, comforted family members during times of distress, walked a client through their last days.  It's a close connection and a lot of one on one that I haven't had anywhere else.
