A Typical Day

 

Always busy and time goes so fast!  My typical day starts with a pre-job meeting to address issues at hand that may require special attention and reminders of quality, safety and productivity; then inventory the work to perform and ascertain the condition of the department prior to taking responsibility from the previous shift; when completed work is assigned and we begin manufacturing a high quality product.  Throughout the day our duties also include set-up of equipment, observing the operation and condition of specialized equipment; cleaning and maintaining a safe and productive work space; communicating with personnel inside different departments; if required we perform product quality tests to meet our high standards; assist in the transferring of completed product to other departments; and close out all records and release of product that has maintained with highest, possible quality.( A Day on the Golf Course).

 

What You Learned

 

Every day is learning experience, regardless of months to years on this position.  The ever changing procedures and SOP’s require all to pay very close attention to written instructions.  Throughout my experience my required responsibilities require me to pay very close attention to detail.  With mechanical experiences in previous positions; my ability to assemble, clean and operate equipment is brought to the forefront.  The mixing of various chemicals, solutions and product has taught me the most effective and safe; work and personnel environment.  The aseptic approach to medical manufacturing has brought to my attention the “ever-clean” approach, and has provided me with a new respect for the costs involved in manufacturing a high quality, premier, medial product. (Keeping My Head Down and concentrating on the shot at hand)

 

Management

 

Management leads and assists in overseeing the quality and production.  They are in place to assist in both hands on training, and in deficiencies found in procedures and in the operation of equipment.  My management team, (supervisor and line leads) always are ready to give guidance and assistance in creating and maintaining the high quality product.  In all instances, my management team is there to assist with constructive and helpful reviews to better the product and my job skills.( My Premier Golf Equipment).

 

Your Co Workers

 

Working in a close knit department requires that skills, organization and assistance of each worker.  Although many have different skill levels, all assist each other in various ways; mostly positive, but can get hectic at times when workloads are overwhelming or when things don’t go as planned.  That is the special time required between co-workers, so that our abilities join force to “get through” and resolve a conflicting issue or work load.  In most cases there is respect with each other, and the responsibility that each level holds is part of our multi-level relationships.   My coworkers are always there to help out when needed and help keep our product of highest quality in a safe, amicable work environment. ( My Foursome golf group for the day).

 

Hardest Part of Your Job

 

Continuous long periods of time standing and lack of breaks; while multi-tasking, while still keeping up high quality and safe work environment can be some of the most difficult, physical portion of my position.  The continuous, and sometime repetitive work load, which comes with many labor intense production jobs can also become monotonous at times.  The understaffing of qualified personnel can lead to becoming physically tired yet the need to keep focused is of utmost importance.  My position is both very mental and physical.  (Lining up for a good golf shot requires concentration and ability to rebound from a bad shot.)

 

The Most Enjoyable Part of My Job

 

The final product to include knowing that my department (my co-workers and me) have manufactured a high quality, premier product.  I often look at retail stores to see if our locations stamp is on some of the products; because we all take pride in what we make.  The department group that always helps each other out, and show attention to details helps me learn and advance in my abilities.  I am proud to be part of this team and really have gotten a new appreciation for the responsibilities that are given to our group.  Learning different aspects of this job; manufacturing; assembling; operating; cleaning and overall communication and the ability to focus on the requirements of my position give me a sense of accomplishment to what the day and shift has completed – that to me is pride for my job and enjoyment in being part of the worlds , highest quality, premier, medical manufacturing team. ( My comments are only snippet of my day and approach to the responsibilities as I further escalate my experiences and qualifications.  While not always “fun”, my position is educational and amusing at times, much like that of a good golf outing!  A good golf outing takes physical abilities, mental guidance and the ability of your group to assist in getting the ball into the hole in the least amount of strokes, while still playing by the rules!)

1. A typical day at work: this job offers me a tremendous amount of autonomy. My early morning consists of pulling sales summary reports and pre-call planning for my day. During the day I travel to 7+ optometric practices in order to offer product information and sales data to optometrists/office staff. During my day I establish 3 appointments and conduct the rest of my visits as drop in, because this is what my time during the day allows. After completing my sales calls I log my information into Salesforce.com. Following my sales calls I return home to finish administrative work. This work includes maintaining my sales metrics, analyzing sales data, following up on items from the day (i.e. customer service requests), and communicating any pertinent information to my manager and teammates.

2. What I've learned: through this position I have learned to effectively identify different customer types through analyzing motivations (money, image, etc). I have also learned to speak to customers about their gross profit vs. profit when utilizing our product portfolio. In my training I learned how to effectively utilize S.W.O.T. analysis to evaluate what my products (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) are when I am selling against my competitive. I have become extremely proficient in establishing effective routing and zoning. Additionally, I am able to outline customers short and long term ROI when they use our products. Finally, I have learned to conduct successful sales presentations in a variety of settings (in office, out of office, trade shows, etc).

3. Management: I have a regional business director who I directly report to. He has a very laid back demeanor and focusses a lot on my professional development. He is a master at constructive criticism and always offers me very informative critiques of my current sales performance. The company has a large facet of other managers in place. Bausch+Lomb employs regional and account managers for specific customer types. When I am working with a particular customer (Walmart) I direct my communication to both my manager and the national account manager. The management structure is very proactive in fostering professional growth and are diligent in helping fulfill sales requests.

4. Co-workers: I work with a group of 7 reps around the Texas area. We communicate remotely, but work together to role play and overcome unique customer objections. Our team dynamic is very liquid and there is only one team conference call a week. Everyone is very good at communicating via text, phone, and email. While we are not close geographically, we are very close through our communications.

5. Hardest part of the job: I believe that in sales the hardest aspect of the job is always organization. No matter what there are always new requests that arise. What I have learned is the ability to prioritize requests to make sure that pertinent items are taken care of immediately. I also make sure to fully utilize my calendar and note taking applications to make sure that nothing falls through the cracks.

6. Best part of my job: The thing I like best about my job is the fact that I am in charge of my own destiny. My earning potential and professional accolades are directly associated with my performance. I am able to benchmark where my strengths and weaknesses are and evaluate how they are effective my personal and professional development.

Been at the FL site for some time and it's slowly getting worse and worse with more regulations, more rules, and newer, inexperienced generations fresh out of college that think they deserve to be manager. Keyboard jockeys that never or barely did the work in one area get promoted and eventually get to rewrite the s.o.p,s for that area because they think they know better. Unwritten benefits like leaving early and making up the hours the next day are slowly withering away. In other areas of the facility they only tend to hire one nationality; in all areas spouses and other family members can work together without regard for any conflict of interest. A mix of old, outdated equipment and new, cutting edge machinery are distributed throughout the facility. They like to hire temps, cross-train them, then when the temps grow tired of having no benefits and leave, the whole tedious training cycle starts again with a new temp. Corporate management has no idea how the local managers can barely keep the place running.

It is an interesting job, a multitude of positions in the facility to get into if you have the background. The whole facility was considered essential so we were not furloughed during the height of the pandemic. If you ask enough nowadays you can get some cross-training which will help with your reviews/promotions, it's even better if you are the manager butt-kisser type. Pay is competitive, but I hear it's towards the lower end of the scale compared to similar types of companies. The facility is fortunately one of the cash cows for B&L so they are always hiring and slowly expanding, with some rare slow downs/layoffs when the economy dips.

In a short period of time I had learn a lot at Bausch+Lomb, the room I worked in is given the name "The Clean Room" which is actually the most sterile room in the building. Anyone that entered that room, had to be gown from head to feet, absolutely no germs could enter that room because it would contaminate the cataract and Toric surgical lens that was produced there. 

     All my co-workers was always willing to assist me by showing me and answering any questions and/or concerns that I would have; such as why I couldn't find the power reading of lens that had a high power, but it wouldn't be visible on the screen. The management was happy with my work ethics,and my productive numbers were getting better daily, they were always complimenting me on my good progress. I've always had a willingness to learn new things, although I was hired to only do power reading of the lens, the crew leader seen a great potential in me and trained me to do dimensions and transfer of supplies as well. 

     However every task we did had to have an LHR checked, verified, signed and dated each day. The most I enjoyed about the job were people I worked with and the new skills I had learned working there. And the hardest part was being forced to leave my job and co-workers due to my husband's job transferring us back to Georgia. 

The co-workers and management surprised me with a farewell party and told me if I ever come back to the area, re-apply for Bausch+Lomb and they would rehire me.

Was mostly a good experience. Managers helped me move up and expand my knowledge. Liked the crew I worked with and for the most part my direct managers. Great benefits. Quite a few Paid holidays. Acceptable vacation time. Fast paced, but I like fast paced work. I was proud of the job I was doing there.

Worst part was scheduling. I signed up for M-F, with occasional OT.  The job really ended up being Mon-Sat. every week. I took position on 2nd, agreed to temporarily cover 3rd (told a month or two) and despite repeatedly asking for months when I could go back to 2nd they simply decided I'd be permanently on 3rd without even telling me. I Had to put in 2 weeks notice to get it fixed after over 6 months of trying to get the management to allow me to work the hours I was promised. 

I was told at one point if we could hit our targets mandatory OT would be reduced, so we pushed hard and hit the targets, then during a meeting we were thanked for all our hard work and told they looked forward to making even more product going forward which was when I'd decided it was time for me to do something else. 

If it wasn't for the constant OT and games when it came to getting my promised schedule I'd likely still be there.

This company's focus was on Eye Health.  I was hired to support the VP of Talent Management and Organizational Effectiveness.  I also supported the Manager of Employee Relations and Manager of Corporate Health and Wellness.  Supporting these people and their stuff really opened up the world of Human Resources to me.  I learned many aspects of this function.  Supporting the VP meant scheduling meetings, booking global travel, responsible for department budget, meeting prep using PowerPoint, Excel & Word,  I was involved in initiating the Talent system called Taleo and launching globally.  I was introduced to SharePoint and worked with a team member in IT that showed me how to maintain the HR site.  Learning the system came easy to me.  My IT partner called me a natural.  My largest project was leading the execution and transition to a new service award program for the US and Canada.  I was also involved with the Women's Network at B&L which participated in a number of community projects including fitting children in need with glasses on an annual basis.  My co-workers were some of the best people I have ever worked with.  It's a shame that B&L was sold because I'm quite sure I would have retired from there had they not been.

Over the 27 years I worked for Bausch & Lomb I was happy, productive and was generally fulfilled.  I feel the leadership team provided excellent vision and direct management respected and valued their resources.  Long and short term strategy was balanced in a way that provided me with a sense of value for my day to day assignments and I saw how that played into the long term strategy.  There generally was no conflict with short and long term goals.  Coworkers respected their colleagues and provided the opportunity for me to perform as a subject matter expert.  I did not feel second guessed.  My position provided me an opportunity to be involved in packaging engineering for a variety of retail, RX and medical device products in addition to other product lines that we acquired along the way.  International travel provided an opportunity for me and my wife to spend time in areas of Europe that we may otherwise not had an opportunity to enjoy.  B&L provided a healthy balance between work and personal.  I certainly would recommend B&L as a great place to work to others.

The position itself is relatively straightforward and offers competitive benefits. However, there are several concerns regarding the overall work environment and management practices. There appears to be a lack of accountability, with issues not always addressed consistently or fairly. HR does not always feel like a supportive resource, as communication can be unclear and employee concerns may not be handled transparently.

Workplace culture is another challenge, as there seems to be favoritism that can impact fairness and decision-making. Instances of unprofessional behavior, including gossip and a lack of action toward workplace conflicts, contribute to a less positive environment.

Additionally, training processes could be improved, as new employees may not receive the level of guidance needed to succeed. Scheduling expectations are not always clearly communicated, and shift hours may extend beyond what is initially outlined. There are also concerns regarding equipment cleanliness and overall workplace standards.

Overall, while the job itself is manageable, improvements in leadership, communication, and workplace culture would significantly enhance the employee experience.

A typical day at work was conversing with Bausch & Lomb/Valeant employees from a global aspect providing requested clinical FDA/IRB approved documents.  Bausch & Lomb/Valeant is located globally,( i.e. Japan, Germany, China, U.S., etc.). My job consisted of meeting timelines and deadlines on time daily.

I learned how to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds and cultures. I also learned that working with your co-workers as a team is very significant in completing day-to-day assignments and fulfilling the Company's goals.

I worked with professional management teams on all levels that provided the tools, training, and mentoring to me in order for me to be able to do my job at the highest quality level.

The hardest part of my job was being a perfectionist. I am an individual that follow Standard Operating Procedures, Company Policies and Rules, and all Government Standards.

The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to meet and work with co-workers from other parts of the world and provide the customer service request by an email, telephone or face-to-face. I also enjoyed working with a culture of diverse individuals whose goals and missions were to make sure that our company fulfilled the Company's goals and mission.

Alot of favoritism, poor management that was almost non existent and or just completely blind as to what's going on. Everyone hates everyone here there's no teamwork and no room for advancement or any real reward for good employees. Good people get passed over for promotions by those who have never worked in the environment or know anything about the process. They created a temporary supervisor position and give everyone a turn for a few months you get people who get a large pay raise and get to boss people around for fun than when their turn is up they take their pay away and throw them back to the hounds so to speak. Bad system as it's made people resent each other.. moral is horrible and there's too many chefs. Management will lie straight to your face to make you happy for a minute so they can leave the room and not deal with you asking questions or confronting them on certain matters they just give you the slip. Any issues never get resolved they still bring up the same things at meetings years later that if anyone who took action was in management would have taken a week to resolve. I couldn't stand working here it made me sick everyday and the hours were tough. No reward for hard work to employees just broken promises day in and day out by management.
