Bitco Insurance Companies

This could be an excellent company to work for but is held back by lifetime employees with no other experience who think the way they've done things for the last 40 years is the best and only way.  Really a great case study about how some turnover is desirable in any company. Underwriting has no authority,  everything has to be approved by egomaniacal program managers with a god complex that think they are the only ones smart enough to make risk selection decisions. Appetite changes frequently but is never communicated or documented so when something is referred that is solidly in Appetite according to written guidelines it's often condescendingly shut down by whatever flavor of the week appetite change thats solely held in the program manager's head. Systems and processes are also terrible so everything takes 4x longer than it would at an actually professionally run company. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Great company. Good benefits. Territory given to each RCC is doable. Management is good. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Some of the goals that were given in the past. But new forms helped that out. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment was good. I worked remotely so I did not have someone looking over my shoulder. Company needs more employee meetings to keep each other in the loop. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Get in my 4 wheel drive truck, go to Logging site off road, meet with customer and discuss items with them. Come back, type report and repeat.

This seemed like a good place to work. The hours were nice, and they do a lot of fun things for you (lunches, holiday events, etc.) 

What ruined it was bullying in several departments that was not addressed (claims and business services).  I personally left the claims dept last year and told HR in my exit interview. But from what I have heard, nothing has been done about the complaints because it’s still happening. 

Their computer system is so old that it’s a pain to learn. They were supposed to get a new system but I bet once they finally do, it’ll be just as outdated as what they have now. They are stuck in the past in way too many ways. Pay is one of them. 

This is a very good company. Leadership takes a genuine interest in employees. Work load is doable within normal business hours most of the time, and they are committed t to work life balance. Good PTO and holiday schedule. Able to work hybrid.

Commercial insurance is so varied and you learn so much about different types of businesses and their specific risk coverage. If you like detail, you will enjoy the nuances of commercial insurance at Bitco. Management is keen on training, course study, and promoting employees.  

I was exposed to various types of claims from Workers Comp, Auto, auto and heavy equipment Total Loss, Inland Marine and Property. For that, I am grateful for the learning experience. However, no formal training was ever provided. It was a learn as you go environment, therefore, some of the learning experiences were not so great and there was no mentor.

Management could not possibly care less about the average worker and that shows in your pay check. Consistency between departments is not a thing. The actual work is okay but again, depends on department. Fundraisers and events are fun but I hear those are scarce within branch offices. 

It is a leaderless company. Moral is in the toilet. Not only are starting wages below industry average. Annual raises every year range between 1-2%. Administrative burden is overwhelming due to over a decade of not investing in IT infrastructure. Parent company Old Repullbic is as jacked up as BITCO. 



They are decent, but management values money over people.  There's a huge CYA culture here.  Lots of finger pointing and passing the buck, driven from the top down.
