Bottomline Technologies

This place pays decently, but it is not worth all of the office politics. The company strives to have a perfect culture and that is all that they talk about, but they don’t have it. They fired a colleague of mine for frowning. They fire people for assisting customers too much with things that we don’t know we are not supposed to do. verified security and even still, they fired me on the spot. They do not give you any time to read over SOP’s if you’re on the member services team, but then when they update them, and you do something wrong that you didn’t know about, they fire you on the spot without conversation. They expect you to do all of your extra training off the clock at night. They also do not give legal breaks. You get one lunch and you have to tell the entire group ping if you have to go to the bathroom, because you know, that’s everyone’s business. I fought for a ten min break for my team and got it with my old boss. He allowed it to come to fruition, but the company has no idea we have a tiny break now. Even then, it’s not the legal amount and many people end up getting burned out, in the hospital, and ultimately quit. They also have this “network fee” that they force clients into to charge them money because that’s how they make their money. They would have new clients sign a paper telling them they won’t get paid by their payers (which is a bold-faced lie because they can be paid by check outside of our network) and don’t tell them there is a substantial fee attached. Many callers would call to deactivate because they were angry (obviously!) and we were told that the team that deactivates takes longer to make sure at least one more monthly network fee goes through before they deactivate. I am ashamed to say that I knowingly worked for them while they were doing this and they are continuing to do this. Now I don’t care about outing them. It was unethical for me to work there. The fact is, they break your spirit and let you know that if you don’t do what you’re told and make any wave at all, even apply for a position within the company that you think you’re qualified for that you’re not, they will terminate you on the spot. They terminate you so they you can’t get unemployment - they say they do this on purpose. DISGUSTING.

The BAD:

There is a reason why this place is constantly hiring. While anyone in management will tell you "it is due to growth", it clearly is due to much more than that. I worked here a few years ago but current employees say it is worse now. No company with good management should hire and fire like this place does.

Now surely some people must like this type of "hyper speed, hyper multitasking, fly by the edge of your pants" management style and corporate atmosphere, but clearly for me this was as close to hell as I could imagine. I would bet 95% of the people dreaded every second spent working there....but would never voice it openly out of fear.

From the first day I should of trusted my gut instincts instead of the "salary and benefits package" they touted (which really is not great considering the sacrifices you will make).

They say they are family friendly, but nobody is spending enough time with their husbands, wives or kids....yet alone have time to see relatives. Your personal time will be crushed. You will regret working here when you retire. No human being was sent on earth to suffer this type of work environment. I can only compare it being a modern day slave who gets paid for it.

You will work early, late and very, very hard and if you dont, they "trim the fat every 3-5 months"....FEAR is how they manage you. Never accomplishing enough is how they motivate you.

Nobody smiles. Well HR-sy types do but nobody else unless they are leaving for lunch or the day.

The GOOD:

Coworkers were actually pretty good overall. Management touts the "great team culture" but in reality they hire/fire at will and only those who work to death stick around.

You will learn here. They force you to learn fast and furious and high stress or you wont last. You will learn if this is what you want out of your life on earth.

Pay, I think pay is average. If you go to a salary calculator they pay you average...sadly today average pay is a blessing...combined with decent/average benefits and most people are running for that job. I advise you run from this one.



The bulk of the business is focused on SaaS solutions.  However, there are still segments of the on-prem business with enormous decade old challenges - lack of Product/Dev resources and no plan to move away from running legacy software (5-20+ years old) on unsupported platforms.  Furthermore, there are no such environments to test or reproduce customer issues and no company sponsored training to ramp up knowledge in an efficient manner.  Collectively, these primary drivers of frustration and "reactive" business philosophy have crushed morale and created perpetual attrition with a continuous parade of outstanding employees moving on to a better situation.  The company recently increased referral bonus but Executive leadership has failed to address root cause of these problems and many employees view this change as an act of "desperation".  Projects aimed at improving the Customer experience at best are slow moving, do not add much value, are not measured against ROI and generally poorly managed with significant delays of 6-12+ months.  They seem to lack proper direction and resources.  Instead of focusing on the same year over year problems that lead to frustration/attrition, the business leaders continue to push their own agenda with no real perceived benefit to employees and customers.  
 
In certain areas of the business there is hardly any Executive communication, a lack of leadership and no visibility.  Even when in the office pre-pandemic, I saw no effort by Execs to host town hall meetings and focus group luncheons.  The common courtesy to willingly listen to employee concerns in an open and honest forum with goal of implementing corrective action, is simply non-existent.  This just creates more disconnect and delusion around day to day challenges. 
 

Certainly a great place to work. Not personal, given completely remote culture, but those you do work with often are great connections. Vast majority of individuals I’ve worked with in my time have been extremely helpful and supportive. Management does not micromanage and as long as the work is done, you’re good.

Pay is below market rate in most roles, there is room for advancement and they do often promote from within, but this takes a lot of time. Was never given a raise despite taking on additional responsibilities and over-achieving by great measure within my role. Not a ton of opportunities for learning or development that will translate well to other organizations. Lots of turnover in entry level roles.

Mid-Management at times seems to have no clear vision or plan moving forward, but does always take care of their team members.

Excellent place to break in to the field, not the best place to build a career, in my personal opinion. Alternatively, there are plenty of individuals who have stuck around and are doing very well for themselves.

If you’re looking to get into sales or software sales, this is really one of the easiest places to start. Certainly enjoyed my time here.

Pros-

The potential of this company is exponential.
The C-level executive leadership is outstanding, the vision and company growth has been consistent over many years.
The Diverse products & technologies, continuous innovation and acquisition strategy will ensure this company continues to grow.
The pace is fast and therefore, Talented Type-A people will thrive.

Cons -

Staffing is too lean for multiple competing priorities and initiatives - contributors feel overworked and the ratio of VP/SVP to engineer is unbalanced significantly.  Employees have little respect for the upper management (under the C-level).
Investment in employees and mentoring/training is minimal, with some exceptions
Inconsistent executive leadership at 'next tier down' from C level - focuses more on the financial performance than on customer success and employee development
Compensation inconsistent and not standardized based on role / performance
Catch phrases are used to intend to motivate teams, "good to great" but the action behind them is farse.

The potential for this company is unlimited, some fresh leadership approaches could launch it.

I enjoyed my time at Bottomline Technologies. My co-workers were great and we all supported one another in our endeavors. I implemented large scale projects that took months and many small/medium sized projects that may only take a week or two. The clients were great to work with, especially during "Go Live" events, and there were many moments for celebration.
Bottomline is like many companies and your success/happiness is somewhat based on your manager. During my time at Bottomline I had four different managers - two were terrific, one was okay, and one was terrible. Pretty typical I believe. 
The compensation was good. Not only the base pay but incentive/thank you bonuses throughout the year and typically a year end bonus (if Bottomline makes it numbers).
It was a rewarding environment. I have no complaints and would recommend Bottomline as a workplace.

	Build and architect the Automation Pagination Hybrid framework from the scratch.
	Develop and execute test cases, scripts, plans and procedures (manual and automated).
	Integrate Selenium with Hammer (IVR Tool)
	Engage in continuous automated testing activity throughout agile development iterations, updated test results in JIRA.
	Designed test cases using Gherkin, Cucumber, TestNG, and Maven& used Grid to run test on multiple browsers and Platforms.
	Developed manual and automated test cases to increase regression coverage as well as new functionality testing using Selenium Web Driver, Java and Cucumber and TestNG.
	Create Bugs using Jira & assign to developers.
	Involved in preparing status reports, attending meetings with scrum team to update the automation status, challenges.
	Responsible for implementation of Pagination Test Automation Framework, POM using TestNG, Maven, Java, and Cucumber.

I worked at Bottomline for about three years, writing software for them, and leaving the company was the best decision I've ever made in my career.

Their software is outdated and bloated. Upper management has no long-term vision - they only care about what the numbers look like at the end of the quarter so as to maintain stock value. This means that everyone else in the company is expendable to upper management as long as they can keep the stock value high. There are more frequent layoffs at this company than any other company I've worked for. Within the three years I was there, there were two waves of layoffs. After I left, a number of other employees left voluntarily, and within a year, there was another wave of layoffs.

Whatever you do, do not work for this company.

Long days, and weekends are expected when working towards a career goal. Unfortunate that the management is completely incompetent, has no vision nor offers direction to their staff. This results in high turnover of staff, not management.
If you are searching for a career and a long term company to invest your time in and in return expect constructive feedback, advancement and moderate security, keep searching.
Most co-workers are either looking for an outside opportunity or simply complacent and waiting for the next round of layoffs to boost the quarterly numbers or management bonus schedule.

Salary is very low for the workload that is added without review of an employees current load. Unreasonable demands are made on most of their staff.

I loved working for this company, but when I found out that I was making 2/3 the industry average the benefits were in no way picking up the slack I had to start searching elsewhere. The employees there make the culture what it is and they live the ethos "Working with and for each other".  Employees will bend over backwards to get the job done in a quality fashion and management always promises compensation (i.e. - bonuses and raises) but they never deliver; morale is tanking. 

The opportunities are to the moon in this place and you can learn a ton from mentors. I learned many valuable lessons about corporate life in this company and the only complaint is a lack of follow through from management and limited levels of compensation.
