If you are a new grad in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, then this is the perfect place to start your career for a year or two and then move on. You can expect to obtain experience in a variety of scans and be trained by some skilled and some not-so-skilled sonographers. If you stay longer than 6 months, you will help orient and train others who were hired that don't even know how to scan and then watch them leave when they can get a better job elsewhere. You will have plenty of goodbye parties because the turnover rate is rediculous. You will learn to love your coworkers dearly because you absolutely have to support one another on a skeleton crew. Be prepared to be overworked because it is ALWAYS understaffed. Management will pretend to care and pretend that they respect and value staff opinions but constantly make changes and decisions that don't make sense to those of us who work in direct patient contact. Management is a complete partisanship and will find a way to get rid of anyone who disagrees, which, in turn, will increase your workload when they're gone. Morale of the Ultrasound Department is usually in the toilet, and when it is, it is YOUR fault. Management will label you as disgruntled and "poison in the pot" rather than do anything positive  to boost morale. Work your tail off while bad managers breed more bad managers. When multiple Sonographers approach Human Resources with proof of dishonesty and lack of integrity in a supervisor, be prepared for absolutely nothing because that's exactly what happens. 

If you are a Sonographer with experience and are offered a position with BCH, be warned that you will most likely turn it down due to low-ball pay. Be very specific about your job description, hours, pay, benefits, raises/bonuses, etc.  because it will most likely be different by the time you actually start.

If it means anything, I was a Sonographer at BCH that stuck it out longer than most. The average life span there is 1-2 years, if that. I was NEVER written up and I was NOT fired; I left on my own after I had put up with the bull long enough.

The office staff, nursing and therapists are very experienced & thorough. They knock themselves out on a regular basis w/ some extremely complex patients who have limited resources. They take the patients that for profit agencies won't touch. I love the close collaboration and focus on the patients. Emotionally it can be draining to have one demanding case after another and there isn't an internal support system.
The pay is just fair, but if you work 20 hrs. you are eligible for all the benefits in prorated form. That is a lifesaver in this world of per visit therapy pay without benefits. No one works full-time except some of the office staff. I don't know how people survive financially. I have to have another job in order to make ends meet. It is telling in that there are NO MALES on the staff. My theory is that the pay is just too low....
That said, it is an amazing place in that there is  very little turn-over so the office flows smoothly and you get to develop personal relationships w/ intake and all the supervisors. Dedicated is how I'd describe my co-workers. Many staff have left and then returned.
They have just gone from paper to computers and are using Meditech software which is among the least user friendly sw that I've used. They had the nursing and rehab. supervisors teaching us how to use a system that they didn't know how to use!!! I've worked at all kinds of hospitals & agencies that document on computers and I've never seen so little IT support to the field staff during the transition.
I wish they paid better and offered more work and I would be very happy to work here until I retire. In the meantime, I need to find another job w/ more hours and better pay......

There are a smattering of good people who work at BCH and try their hardest to help.  Office staff turnover was constant and frequent - despite promises by my office manager when I was hired that they always had an abundance of long term back office staff.  There was not a time in nearly 3 years that the clinic was truly fully staffed.  Wages for ancillary staff were slightly below average - so most of the talent would move on once they had adequate experience.  Burnout is extremely high at all levels.  Communication at all levels is horrendous - but I have found this is common in most healthcare settings these days.  The location I worked in was hostile, childish and vindictive at time, particularly so with the original crew of physicians that worked at this clinic prior to it be sold to BCH vs new BCH hire physicians.  The physicians are also responsible for nearly all of the data entry in the EMR  and maintenance of registries / databases... items that do not require a MD/DO degree on top of the normal clinical duties for a physician.  Again, promises were made that additional staff would be hired to do data input on behalf of the providers - which did not occur.  Then we were advised that our medical assistants would be taking on this duty in addition to their current duties, which of course was a fallacy, as even the medical assistants with decades of family medicine experience were unable to keep up with the daily baseline assigned duties.  Ultimately, its still cheaper to force the primary care physicians on salary to do the data input. 

I've worked in multiple industries and at numerous hospitals, clinics, and large health systems as an IT analyst. This is the most engaging and fun job I've ever had. It's a smaller IT team than the other health systems which means I have more opportunities to learn new products. I don't have to just focus on one technology or application. Education and mental health are valued and supported. My manager, director, and the CIO are all super supportive, authentic, and care about me as a person. They make a point of hiring good people so there is a very positive and collaborative work environment. They don't just talk about the mission and values, they are serious about doing good work in the world. The team values were crowdsourced from the employees (how cool is that) and people truly believe in them.

For a small team we have big accomplishments. We led an extremely successful Epic implementation in 2019 and at the time were the most successful Epic go-live for a community health system. Despite our smaller size, we have gotten awards for Healthcare's Most Wired, Epic Honor Roll (top honors), 9 Epic Gold Stars, and are HIMSS EMRAM level 7 for both hospitals and our clinics, the most advanced a health system can be. There isn't all the bureaucracy of a big organization which lets us focus on doing meaningful work and making our customers happy. IT is super well-respected by the nurses, doctors, support staff, and especially by the executive team. Our CIO won an award for the best Colorado non-profit/government CIO of the year and he deserves it.

I love my job, I love my team, I love my boss, and I feel fulfilled by my work. 

The Foothills lab of Boulder Community Health is not for everyone.  There is very little flexibility with the work schedule, which is planned 2 months in advance.  The compensation is low compared to similar MLS jobs in the surrounding area, which makes living in Boulder hard due to the high cost of rent. The work environment is stressful, as you will get the feeling that you are set up for failure, with training never being adequate and you not realizing it until you start getting written up as a 'teaching tool'.  The manager of the blood bank as made the entire hospital hostile to the lab, and there are separate social groups that constantly seem at war with each other.  

Though! During my time there I kept my head low, dealt with the nonsense with a smile and happily moved on when I found something better.  The grass is greener on the other side!!  This place will suffice if you need short term employment.  They always have an opening as turnover rate is very high.  Don't get too attached to anyone.  Great spot to work as a traveler as they don't seem to get the same treatment from management.

**Must rotate through nightshift for training and on a regular basis (all employees in the core lab).

I have worked for Boulder Community Health 10 Years this August. I am 41 and I know that I will never want to work anywhere else and have plans to retire from BCH. Every job has its stressors, every job has its challenges! The BEST thing about BCH is the culture. Here you have a community of coworker friends that rally around each other in support & celebration. BCH is truly my second family! I have those that I work directly with that are amazing and those that I do not and it is a joy to see them around the campus! We are a non-profit however, we are financial strong, there has never been a worry of a big for profit buying us out. We are a community Hospital with philanthropic programs and roots in the community. Whenever I've had to be a patient at the hospital, I feel so much more comfortable and assured that I am getting the best care, because I know everyone on my care team and they know me. I am proud to say that I work for Boulder Community Health!!

What is the best part of working at the company?
It’s a good place to work and, they preach how much individuals mean to them. How much patient safety means to them. This is until money issues hit. At this point, people mean zero, patient health is a facade. They go into a knee jerk survival mode. It’s disgusting.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Listening to the rhetoric of how everyone matters and patients are our main concern. The truth is that the bottom line is all that counts.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It’s great if you want to drink their kool-aid. There is no hope of advancement from within. If you do, you are at a disadvantage vs an outside candidate. It a dehumanizing experience. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My day with them is over. I took an early retirement to maintain my self integrity. I’ve never been so happy to separate from an employer. BCH is the least diverse employer in the least diverse city in the USA.

There are good people that work BCH. However, the management displays lack of forethought, proper roll-out, and realistic expectations. It's consistently stressful with pressure to increase productivity but no systems/procedure/protocol to do it and a lack of understanding of the demands of the job and how much time non-billable hour items take, especially with lack of organization/policy and always having to re-create the wheel. Despite being told these things are a problem, they have not been solved yet, with promises of 'it's just around the corner' with lack of long-term and effective forethought for the solutions, always changing directions. I got tired of waiting and in hindsight would have left within the first six months. I would not recommend working at BCH for longer than a year or so. A good place to work while you look for something else.

Being a PCT for Pre-op and PACU at this hospital has been one of my favorite workplaces while finishing my BSN program. The job was enjoyable because the Nurses and manager were supportive and knowledgeable. While this unit can be chaotic and crazy sometimes, I still had time to take breaks and eat. Since I was in school to become a nurse, it was a great place to learn time management skills and the ins and outs of working in a hospital setting. The nurses had educated me on specific procedures and just knowledge they had learned over the years; from a nursing student perspective, that was wonderful. I have nothing wrong to say about this hospital. I recommend working for this hospital; it's one of my favorites. They have a Starbucks in the lobby, which is a bonus, with great views from their many windows and tasty cafeteria food.

I love all the people I work with but we are severely short-staffed and management is doing nothing to address the situation. Since I started working, 7 medical assistants have quit and they have hired 2. They don't refresh job postings so no one is aware BCH is even hiring unless they specifically search for the company. They refuse to give a raise even though we are doing the job of at least 2 medical assistants. They are unwilling to decrease patient load because it would hurt their bottom line. Patients are not getting med refills on time and it is beginning to be dangerous for patients and yet, management seems indifferent. 

The joke at my job is work at BCH, leave on prozac.
