As a Student operating room surgical technologist, I have provided care for the surgical patients during the intra-operative phase. I am proficient and have competently scrubbed in all surgical procedures and assist circulating. As a student technologist I am accountable for their sterile field and all required instrumentation and sterile supplies. I am also accountable to follow all departmental policies. I have given care to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients; demonstrating the ability to work with patients' growth, development, and psycho social needs specific to each population being served. Standards measured by the PI process must be met.

As a L&D student Scrub Technician I have assisted in nursing care and preparation of surgical patient by performance of routine and delegated duties, according to standards and policies of the center.  As a student I am also responsible for assisting the surgeon, helping in the central sterile processing department, restocking and changing over rooms between procedures.  Performs housekeeping duties as necessary and assists in maintenance of all supplies. 
 
 ·Assists with and delivers safe, effective intra-operative nursing care until patient is transferred from the operating room suite.  
·Ensures patient comfort and safety measures are maintained.
·Anticipates special needs, equipment and supplies for the patient relative to an accurate physical assessment of the patient by a nurse.
·Assists in preparing the operative suite for surgery checking supplies, equipment, and instrumentation.
·Assists in preparing the operative room between cases, as necessary.
·Assists in assuring the availability of adequate supplies and instruments for posted cases and assists in opening room in a sterile environment.
·Utilizes surgeon preference cards to check with each case and updates as needed.
·Assists the surgeon during a surgical procedure with a high degree of efficiency, anticipating physician and patient needs during the case.
 · Interacts with patients, fellow employees, physicians, and other customers in a manner which encourages quality patient care, harmonious working relationships, positive customer relations, and which enhances the image and reputation of the center.
·Assist in orienting new staff members to the OR suites and central processing decontam and sterile areas.
·Shares knowledge with co-workers through open communication.
·Follows chain of command regarding intra or interdepartmental issues.
·Evaluates suggestions objectively, accepts constructive criticism, and seeks guidance when needed.
 ·Supports the center's mission by dependability in attendance, punctuality, the timely completion of care and other assignments, resource and information management, and attention to principles of quality service.
 ·Maintains and improves skills and knowledge appropriate for position, personal growth, and for enhancement of patient care.
 ·Assists in daily maintenance of the department, in completing monthly work assignment sheet, restocking, pull cases for the next day, and maintaining equipment in good working order.  Utilizes non-chargeable items in a cost-effective manner.
 ·Understands and effectively implements "Best Practices, Risk Management, and Quality Improvement Programs.



Most enjoyable day to day operation included to have successfully served the clients and to further attempt to make every effort to learn new skills. 

Unfortunately, if you are seen as someone with too much potential you become an outcast and every low blow act becomes the way of life, mostly especially with the middle management and untrained managers.

One of the most horrifying experience was the challenge of allowing oneself to be lead by some unprofessional who demonstrated poor work ethics and unethical leadership traits constantly. The fact that there was no way out other than to follow directions and not say a word despite the situation was a constant nightmare to live through and endure on a daily basis. 

The constant struggle with reprisals and fair of being constantly exposed to further reprisals including engaging other staff members to be contentious, be a bully, nitpick and harassed other staff members so it appears that an individual is not a team player or uncooperative was a very frightening experience. Being professional only indicated as signs of weakness, scared and every low blow concept one can possible think of. 

Intimidation and fear is 100% high at that place among (some managers and supervisors, not all of them).  If you are not with the clicks- be prepared to deal with the harsh consequences!

Broward health is a for profit organization that has the facilities and capacity to promote health wellbeing and improve people’s lives on all levels, including, employees, however, there needs to be a great deal of change in the internal structure of hierarchy with regard to leadership. the need to hire qualified and trained leaders is essential to growth of Broward Health. Moral and ethical principles are completely lacking which will surely result in major legal problems.

A non-participant such as The Department of Justice and Labor can see right through the beurocracy among the power struggle that engages internally

The place for you if you want no autonomy, if you want to be verbally disrespected by senior staff/management, if you want to do everyone’s job including your own while adhering to your productivity standards. Understaffed and under-compensated. This department lacks good management; move up with the “its who you know” at the forefront.  Staff are knocked down for everything and just end up angry and hating their jobs. At the very least they could practice some positive reinforcement. 
If you are not in with the right senior staff or management you get picked apart for everything you do. You are trained by various people on how to do the same procedure by lets say 3 different people, 3 different ways and get criticized which ever way you decide to do it. Not a healthy work environment.  The patients and non-management/non-Senior staff  co-workers are the only good thing here. A lot of childish “ I’ve been here longer than you” games, “you can’t sit here”, “park here”; lots of nepotism, clicks and special treatment between management and “special” workers.  You are told by senior staff to suck up to certain people in order to get treated better…treated right. 
Observed many instances of maltreatment onto workers from people who worked for the company >25 years. Personally have made complaints and I am aware of others who have made serious complaints and allegations of inappropriate comments from protected employee. Complaints fall on deaf ears I can only assume because of how long they’ve worked for the company.  Nothing about this right. 

I was employed with Broward Health for 9 years. It is sad to work in an environment where you are being constantly reminded how lucky you are to have a job. I was hired based on my skills after careful  screening to provide customer service to the community that walked through the doors, not because I am a FTE that is lucky. 
Constantly being excused from work early, sometimes after just 2 hrs of work, thus having to use your accumulated sick time just to receive a descent paycheck. 
Department cliques, if you are not in the current management clique you will be treated very different than those that are joined at the hip. Rules are created that are not corporate approved to solve issues, ask HR how many times employees brought to this to their attention. Employees running their business during working hours as patients waited for their services, I seen it, brought it to the appropriate level to receive attention, and it was ignored. It was still going on as of my last day of employment.
To sum it up, at the end of my career with Broward Health Imperial Point I drove white knuckled to work. I am happy that this is not the case any more.

This hospital as a whole saves lives and improves the lives of those that use their services, no doubt. But when the the hospital /department is sick, who is going to save it.

Clinically challenging.  Intense. Exciting.  I worked 15 years in the critical care units,.  I studied the BCCCP from the BPS and from ASHP.  i studied the Board of Pharmacy ER prep manual.  I wanted the knowledge,.  I never thought that I would need the credentials.  I listen to critical care podcasts to keep up to date with new evidence based medicine.  I went on daily medical rounds and trauma rounds.  I would do a complete chart review before rounds and follow up afterwards to make sure that the changes that were to be made to the patient care were completed.  I gave feedback and recommenations on every patient.  I built a very good rapport with the surgeons, physicians, nurses and other staff.  I learned so much over the years.  Actual experience is very valuable,  The work culture was good.  the management was good.  the hardest part of the job was the constant short staffing.  the most enjoyable part of the job is saving a life in the ER or ICU. or CVICU because of my intervention.  I always went on codes.  I was working on the units during covid.  
I am interested in a remote position, retail, mail order Clinic with a pharmacy....I'm open to something completely new.  I have excellent business, organizational, problem solving skills. I will get certified in BCCCP and the new ER board certification.
I can do any job that I am interested in.


Broward Health hospital  has the capacity to develop and promote growth among employees however most employees seem to share the same disgruntled comments regarding "lacking growth and development" and the fact that managers gives bad reviews, referrals and recommendations if you disagree with them or if they do not like you. Former employees complain about being black listed (cannot obtain employment elsewhere) whenever they leave Broward Health.

The demonstration of ethical leadership principles, less intimidating approach and more simulative work environment  from all aspects of leadership will someday improve employee morale and internal bureaucracy.  A major facility that has the capacity and resources to provide health services at all  levels to patients and employees appropriately and to further promote teamwork in a more team oriented atmosphere.

Most exciting part of the daily job functions included the opportunity to demonstrate administrative services at both internal and external levels, to further see patients receive the care they need and tasks are accomplished to promote health. 

There were also other rewarding and fulfilling parts of the day that commemorated a passionate approach when tasks were carried out to promote team work, patient care and other activities satisfactorily

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working in the Adult Cancer center was very rewarding.  The supervisor is the best boss I’ve ever had!  Such wonderful coworkers that have a passion for helping the patients.  The facility is absolutely amazing and so welcoming for the patients.  Even the comfort dogs that come to visit are amazing.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful thing about working there is the commute to and from work.  However, the commute to any job in SE FL is stressful.  Otherwise you will experience normal hospital life.  If you’re not familiar with working in a hospital just remember it’s ever changing.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
My experience was great, but I was not really exposed to the normal hospital life.  The little exposure I had was no different than any other hospital experience.  Your experience is what you make it!  If you steer clear of hospital drama and do your job you’ll be fine.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My experience was different from day to day.   Again I worked in the Adult Cancer center which can be very difficult and emotional at times.  If we had not moved out of state I’d still be there.

What is the best part of working at the company?
This is the best hospital for a nurse or other clinician to be . They value education and safety of the patient . Great hospital! Only the best . The Doctors  are very restful and is constantly educating the nurses on best practice . Evidence based hospital ! . A culture of safety and powerful medicine ! The finest  physicians are here 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Time is of the essence . You need to work with speed  and accuracy . 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The managers and supervisors are always listening for your input as an employee . They provide the tools and equipment to work safely . Safety is big here for both patients and staff . The staff is constantly learning . 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Huddle in the morning ; report at bedside ; . Both nurses say good morning and night nurse says good bye . Great organized place to be . Leaders listen to nurses and other staffs . Doctors are the finest and very respectful to the nurses .

I work the 3rd shift, my typical day is actually my typical night at work. I begin with my Biological Testing of all sterilization machines as well as
the Air Removal Testing on certain autoclaves. After that I begin with the inspection, assembly and sterilization of instrument trays that will be needed for the next day surgical procedures.  Occasionally I will be in the  decontamination area removing gross soil and bio burden from the instruments used in surgery. Other parts of my evening include restocking floor carts that are brought to the Sterile/Central Supply area. My co-workers and myself get along fine, we work at a good pace and compliment each others work style.  The hardest part of the job would be keeping up with all the work needed for the next day to make sure it is done in a timely matter. The most enjoyable part of my job is the hours that I work.

Overall what I have learned from my work experience, is how important our department is in the daily routine of the surgical procedures, Doctors, surgical staff and of course all the patients at Broward Health Medical Center.

I appreciated the opportunity to work at Broward Health and gained valuable experience during my time there. Unfortunately, my overall experience was affected by poor management and lack of support. My manager was often disrespectful and unprofessional in the way they communicated with staff, which created a stressful and uncomfortable work environment.
In addition, maintaining a healthy work- life balance was very difficult due to high to scheduling demands and workload expectations. I also felt that the compensation and benefits did not match the amount of work and dedication required for the position. Employees work hard and deserve fair treatments, respect, and adequate support. I hope improvements are made in leadership, employee relations, and overall workplace conditions.
