I have worked at Burcham Hills for nearly 25 years.  I thoroughly enjoy my time at Burcham which allows me to build lasting relationships with the employees, families and the wonderful residents who call Burcham Hills ‘home.’  The feeling you get as soon as you walk through the doors is a feeling of warmth.  There are so many activities available for the residents and their families - from MSU tailgating parties, watching games together, musical programs, fitness exercise groups, educational series and so much more.  There are also many outings to museums, Wharton Center, restaurants, scenic drives and many more.  The best thing is that the residents have input on what they would like to do or see.

Another proud note is how our community weathered the pandemic over the past 2+ years.  We had to be extremely creative daily when the pandemic hit about how we could engage our residents when everyone couldn't be together in large or even small gatherings.  We also showed a lot of compassion and empathy with our families who were restricted by regulations on visiting the community and their loved ones.

I was recently asked, "Are you thinking about retiring anytime soon?"  I replied, “Why would I?  I love my job!”

I am a Registered Nurse on the first floor CHR. Since the very beginning, when I hired in April 2020, I’ve had nothing but one of the best work experiences I’ve ever had. Whenever I have a question or a suggestion regarding how care may be improved, I’ve always felt that management has been easily accessible and that I am actually listened to. The follow up to any of my questions or concerns is always quick, and sometimes even immediate. I don’t ever feel as though I cannot talk with management, and their reception of me is always warm, kind, and caring. 

I also appreciate my fellow employees with whom I work on a daily basis. Though there have been some issues with short staffing throughout the community, everyone pitches in to ensure that we are still able to provide excellent care to our residents. Even on the busiest days, I still feel as though I have the time to get to know the residents, which enables me to cater to everyone’s individual needs. Our residents are not looked at as just numbers, but as individuals who have lived rich and full lives, and I feel that I am able to provide the care that takes this into account. 

Working at Burcham Hills thus far has been one of the best experiences in my 16 years as an RN. Thank you, Burcham, for giving me the opportunity to find my nursing “home.” 

MANAGEMENT SHOWS FAVORITISM! If you're not facebook friends with them watch out! They fire people for the craziest reasons & put the load on the existing staff by mandation which is at least 4-6 times a month & god forbid if you can't stay one of those times then you're at risk of losing your job! It doesn't matter to them if you have another job or school to go to if you or your kids are deathly ill you still have to be mandated! They never praise you for what a good job you're doing, or the overtime, or picking up shifts when they can't find anyone at all to work them they are always short staffed! If a patient is delusional & said that you slapped them,spit in they're face & called them Lulu & in reality all you did was give them a drink of water or put sock on their feet they take you off the schedule pronto without even investigating it first! You maybe lucky to get a gotcha card ooo now you can choose from a king sized candybar chips  or a warm bottle of soda pop! & on top of all of that the pay isn't so great! The employees rock but management sucks!!! Oh yeah you wouldn't want to work 2nd or 3rd shift there, they are the ones that catch the most heat unless you're facebook friends with the management!

I feel extremely fortunate  to work for an organization (and department) that consistently demonstrates their dedication to providing high-quality patient/resident care and positive patient/resident outcomes and experiences. Their continual commitment to excellence is evident in all departments.

The nursing staff at Burcham Hills exhibit a high level of clinical competence. They are  knowledgeable, approachable, compassionate, and prioritize the well-being and comfort of each patient/resident. 

The interdisciplinary collaboration  and team comradery foster an environment of comprehensive treatment plans, unity, and positive experiences for patients, residents, and employees. Each department is supportive, eager to assist, and responsive to patient/resident needs, as well as, the needs of the community. Employees are acknowledged, appreciated and valued between management and between disciplines and departments.

The staff work tirelessly to not only enhance the quality of life  of the patients and residents, but also to touch the lives of those employees around you. The staff is productive, effective and fun-loving. I am proud to say - We Are Burcham!





 


I have been with this company for 15 years. I have worked as a CNA, Medication Tech, Team Leader, Administrative Assistant. The most important thing of this community is working with elders, families and learning their life stories. I have enjoyed being involved with some of the activities learning how to play bridge and playing with the elders. Watching the elders make jewelry and playing bowling on the wii.

A typical work day as Administrative Assistant could be very busy. The office could be full of people waiting to see the nurse or want to make appointments. Trying to meet everyone needs or answer question that may come my way. There are times the phone is very busy.

I learned how to manage my time and use it wisely. When things get busy I learned to take one step at a time. Management have a good relationship the team. My co-workers have a good relationship with me. Enjoy working with them and sharing laughs. The hardest part of the job is work getting behind. The most enjoyable part of the job is interacting and meeting the elders needs.

Awful place to work. Burcham does not care about the employees work life balance. They claim that employee engagement is important yet when it comes down to the actual employees they don't care about you. HR runs the place. I was told by a coworker that if I didn't like my manager's decision to go to HR and they will fix it. My manager was great and you could tell she cared about us but there was only so much she could do. My interview process went smoothly and the person I was in contact with was great. Unfortunately, after she told me my paperwork was sent to HR I didn't hear from them for weeks. Then when I was finally offered the job the HR person was incredibly rude. I missed my orientation because I was given the wrong information. No one seemed to know what they were doing. I should've realized than that Burcham would not be a good place to work. Any problems brought forward that involved another department was ignored. We were constantly blamed for the CNA's mistakes. I will never work there again!

For me a typical work looks like coming into work at 4:15 and having a daily meeting with the supervisors for the night, I then go to the kitchen an take the food cart to the floor i am assigned for the day. Once i have made it to the floor i am required to take the food from the cart and place then in the stem wells, once i have done that i then have to record the temperatures of each food item. then i begin dinner service. After dinner service i record a second temperature and pack the food back into the cart and take it to the main kitchen. i then go back to my assigned floor to clean the kitchen i was in.  This job has taught me to deal with multiple personalities coming from the nursing staff and the residents. For me the management is not the best but, it is tolerable. For me the hardest part of the job is serving all of the residents within about an hour time frame. One enjoyable thing at Burcham are the free lunches it is really convenient when i only get a thirty minute break.

Horrible company if your looking for opportunities to advance all the way up. One advancement is all you get and then when you do advance they make your job worse than what it was. The residents are amazing, but you have to remember to not make special bonds with any of them because you are not allowed to get attached to them although you're caring for them. If your job starts to become too stressful and you ask for help, no one is really willing to help. Employees (caregivers and med techs) come last to everything and no one ever gets recognized for their hard work. If you're expecting to be paid the same as any CNA or Tech in the state of MI, whelp dont expect it from here oh and lets not forget the overtime. Yes there are plenty of shifts to pick up, but when your paycheck comes don't expect it to be more than what you originally thought because they will come up with some type of excuse as to why its not considered OT or holiday pay for that matter.

This is by far the worst company I’ve ever worked for. The management is close knit and very caddy. They’ll smile in your face all while seeking out ways to throw you under the bus. If you’re not willing to worship the ground they walk on, kiss your job goodbye. If you’re a CNA, welcome to a circus. The patio ratio is 1:16 on good days. Usually there’s only two people on the floor so you’re looking at about 20+. ILLEGAL. Majority of the nurses sit and watch call lights go off for more than 20 minutes over while pretending they’re charting. But they don’t care, as long as they don’t have to do it. This place has gotten state called on them so much that your own license and certification is at stake! Oh and speaking on state, plan to get state called on you every other week so you’re under investigation more than you’re working. The pay may be flattering but it’s definitely not worth the work load, understaffing, unprofessionalism, and most of all your entire career being put in jeopardy.

Burcham puts a great deal of resources towards researching both resident and employee satisfaction. My experience over the last 7+ years is that administration, starting from our Executive Director all the way down the line, encourages any employee to feel like they can bring up whatever concerns they have. 

I appreciate coming to work every day with people who really enjoy making positive connections with our residents. Even with coworkers I haven't gotten to know very well, I feel like we're on the same page immediately when it comes to providing compassionate care. 

Working in the Recreation Dept. gives me a chance to do something different every day! Any off-the-wall idea we have is given a chance as long as it's safe and enriches the lives of the people living (and working) here.
