COPE Health Solutions presents itself as a mission-driven organization focused on workforce development, but the internal reality falls short of that promise. While there are talented and committed individuals across the organization, leadership decisions and structural issues consistently undermine both employee experience and program quality.

The “unlimited PTO” policy is framed as a progressive benefit, but in practice it functions more as a cost-saving mechanism than a meaningful perk. Because there is no accrual, employees forfeit any payout upon departure, effectively removing a standard financial safeguard. At the same time, cultural norms and workload expectations make it difficult to actually use the time. In reality, most employees take far less leave than they would under a traditional model, and time off often is informally capped at around two weeks. Rather than encouraging rest and sustainability, the policy subtly incentivizes overwork while giving the appearance of flexibility, essentially a dangling carrot. The result is a benefit that looks appealing on paper but offers limited real value to employees.

A major concern is the lack of strategic alignment and sustainable infrastructure. Teams are frequently expected to operate in reactive mode, with shifting priorities and unclear direction from leadership. This creates inefficiencies, burnout, and ultimately impacts the consistency of programs that are meant to serve students and healthcare partners.

There is also a disconnect between the organization’s external messaging and internal culture. While COPE emphasizes growth, development, and impact, employees often experience limited support, inconsistent communication, and a lack of investment in their professional advancement. High turnover and role instability are not surprising outcomes in this environment.

Additionally, decision-making can feel top-down and disconnected from on-the-ground realities. Those closest to the work are not always meaningfully included in shaping strategy, leading to missed opportunities for improvement and innovation.

Would 10/10 recommend this program to anyone wanting to go into healthcare. I am going to school to get my RN license and did this program summer of 2021. I was able to learn the ins/outs of the hospital while getting hands on experience. Because this program is volunteer and not paid, it truly showed me what it means to work hard for my career and sacrifice my time. I also had to go above and beyond every shift by putting myself out of my comfort zone to make friends with the nurses and hospital staff. 

My advice to anyone considering- do it! It will teach you so many values and really allow you to figure out what exactly you want to do, healthcare related or not. Don’t waste your time taking classes and applying to schools without the proper experience because you may find out it’s not exactly where you want to be. 

The application process was super simple (don’t let it scare you!) and the training was as expected. I feel as though the program manager and team members help get me ready and gave me so much grace as I had no clue what to expect. I sought my CNA license after the program because I wanted to have a job while in nursing school.. because of the program, I was able to get a job at the same hospital I once volunteer at. 

The shifts may seem long and you may feel unequipped, but it was the BEST decision I made. I could not be more thankful for all that I learned on each unit and the relationships I made. Having this program on my resume is the reason I was hired at the hospital- your hard work will pay off!!!

Management is very disorganized and out of touch with day jobs to day operations. Employees are often given only fragments of information, which creates confusion and uncertainty about expectations. When questions are asked, there is rarely a clear answer or direction.

Many employees also felt misled by the job postings. For example, certain roles were advertised as hybrid, but that option was removed once the team was hired. When concerns were raised, the response was simply that job descriptions can be changed at any time without notice. This created challenges for staff who accepted the role based on the flexibility that was originally promised.

The overall leadership culture is discouraging. There is a lack of consistent support, and decisions often feel unfair or uneven across the team. Feedback is requested but rarely acted upon, which leaves employees feeling unheard. Frequent turnover in management has also created instability. Additionally, favoritism is noticeable, and it impacts morale and the overall work environment.

The benefits, such as unlimited PTO and health coverage, are the main positives. However, even PTO has become difficult to use, as management often asks for unnecessary details when requests are submitted.

Overall, this is not a supportive environment for employees who want clear direction, consistent leadership, and opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

A typical day in the hospital sees patients coming in and out. I assisted healthcare workers with their duties. Typically, I will take vital signs on the hour, prepare patient beds/rooms every time a patient is discharged and another one is expected, deliver specimens to the lab, keep linens stocked, and provide patients with whatever they are needed. I learned a lot about patient care, and also about interacting with patients and visitors of different backgrounds and cultures. The clinical care extender program itself had its own management consisting of volunteers, both a leader for each hospital department, and a main manager of the program at that site. My coworkers would be other volunteers, as well as physicians, nurses, and technicians whom I worked with.
The hardest part of the job was working with more difficult patients, who sometimes had unreasonable demands that were not consistent to the recommended care for them. But this challenge is a part of the job, and with experience it becomes easier. The most enjoyable part is knowing that I am making a difference in both patients' and nurses' lives-helping to make their hospital stay slightly more comfortable, and making someone's work day a bit easier.

My experience with the organization highlighted several critical areas of concern regarding operational efficiency and workplace culture:

Structured Training: The onboarding process lacked a cohesive framework, forcing employees to navigate complex processes entirely on their own without proper guidance.

Operational Expansion Strategy: There appears to be a disconnect between upper management's expansion decisions and the operational realities of the local markets we serve, which directly impacts company stability.

Psychological Safety & Job Security: The workplace culture suffers from a lack of trust and transparency. High turnover and inconsistent messaging regarding performance have created an environment of anxiety rather than growth.

Leadership and Professionalism: Promises regarding career development were unfulfilled, and the lack of collaborative leadership has fostered an adversarial relationship among team members."

Check in with head nurse. Make rounds on patients, stocking supplies, cleaning rooms and making patients comfortable. Responding to call buttons. Delivering food trays during lung or dinner. Discharging patients. Taking patients who could leave their bed for a little stroll in a wheelchair or walker to get a look outside or even just of the pictures on the wall. Hardest part was watching the infants and children that were very sick and their parents that stayed up all night. Most rewarding was when they remembered you and were happy to see you the next time you came in (in the unfortunate event that they were still there). Also, working by yourself and having to be your own team leader and not always being told what to do. It was hard at first, but you learn what needs to be done. Change bedding, give patients new cleaning supplies and if time keep them company.

This was a volunteer internship so the majority of what CCEs do is to assist the nurses. Some of this may be administrative type work but most of the time it is actual interaction and patient care. Often depending on the department you get to observe hospital or surgical procedures. The hours are not bad and the scheduling is pretty flexible and I got a great amount of time with patients and working with hospital staff who can be great references. It's really good for pre-health students who are looking for a career in this field because at this point it's hard to find something where you are so hands on. The staff was really friendly and most would be happy to teach you. As to be expected, a hospital environment can be fast paced and hectic but it is so rewarding.

Working for COPE was a fundamental first step which got my feet wet for the hospital field. It allowed me to experience a new working environment, full of day to day experiences from communication to Patients, Nurses, and families of the patients. The management was very stern, making sure all COPE employees followed hospital protocol by the books, ensuring that both the patients and employees were well taken care of and safe. Employees were responsible mainly for assisting the RN and CNA nurses on the floor but were also responsible for strong patient care: assisting, feeding and cleaning patients. Patient-employee interaction and communication bridged any gaps between the patients and the hospital that were not already covered by the nurses.

I have just started shadowing a current intern and the typical day at work was busy, but manageable. I learned a lot about bedside manner, where supplies are stored, and the overall ambience and daily routines of those who work in the hospital. The management is great and it is always ensured that everyone in the workplace is doing their job right and making sure that patients are comfortable and taken care of. My co-workers are very helpful and knowledgeable. The hardest part of the job would have to be the sudden changes in plans as to which patient to take care of next due to new patients coming in or sudden emergencies that need attention. The most enjoyable part of the job is just being in the hospital where I see myself in the future.

If you are a student and is seeking for an experience in the health field, this is the company you want to apply to. They jump start your career and will spawn a lot of opportunities. I like how you could choose the departments you can volunteer in. A typical 4-hour shift varies day to day and in departments you chose. I have harnessed my skills as a CNA because the medical staff are continuously asking for help, which is good. The hardest part of the job is I would say nothing, you will be trained for 3 days before you throw you in to the floor. I enjoy that you have direct patient contact and there is a lot to learn in every department!
