When I interviewed for Capital Health I knew something was weird because the Manager actually mentioned how no one liked her and she was just there to do her job. We agreed to what my schedule would be ( some weekdays and every other weekend) and I was excited about working for Capital Health. The training schedule was okay; the staff often complained about our Manager and I heard stories about how many people have actually been fired or quit because of her. I received my normal schedule a few weeks before my training was over and it was NOTHING that I agreed to, but I needed the job so I thought if I said anything they would let me go. It wasn't until my mother had a stroke and lived in Alabama that I asked if I could switch my schedule temporarily, or even swap with someone, to take care of business for my mother in Alabama. The manager flat out told me NO and pretty much said for me to resign, give a detailed email and state that I would like to be considered for re-hiring in the near future. Per our conversation I did what she recommended. A few months later, I re-applied to Capital Health and reached out to the Human Resource Director to inform them of my conversation ALONG with the email from the Manager in hopes of getting my job or something similar back. Although I had the emails the Manager denied ever speaking with me regarding the issue and she placed me on the Do Not Re-Hire list. For this to be a hospital, a facility that services people and is supposed to show compassion and kindness, that manager showed NONE. I have never had that type of experience with other employers and I would not recommend them to anyone who is looking for a job.

Typical day is very busy with numerous procedures involving direct patient care, planning & anticipating for future scheduled procedures, and checking & maintaining inventory of disposables for daily scheduled procedures. See details regarding management under cons. Most difficult areas of this job were juggling many tasks in the allotted time, given the thinning out of available staff. Most enjoyable aspect of the job was being able to comfort patients during a stressful time, and the close relationships able to be developed among staff who were able to work together as a team that felt more like a family.

More recent efforts have been made to recruit & retain staff while having agency temp staff fill these positions during the interim. Some pay increase incentives have been offered, although it was quite some time before this was implemented and more experienced staff resigned during this time.

A typical day in Capital Health System is very fast paced with Traumas being flown in or brought in by ambulance, neurological patients flown in from all different hospitals due to the hospital being one of the top in Neurological Emergency Medicine. I've learned at this hospital how to register trauma patients and neuro patients in a very quick manner by going in and out of a room in a matter of a minute and gathering name DOB and reason for visit when traumas come in you have to be in and out ASAP and waste no time due to condition sometimes patients have to be rushed to the or and you have no time to waste so and long and you get them into the system and banded with a bracelet it allows the Dr's to order meds and take care of the patient without delay. I don't really think there is a hard part to the job if your good at multitasking and keep your head in order I feel if you know your job well enough everything can get done in a timely manner and as long as you and your co-workers work well together all can be done I believe there is nothing like team work.

Capital Health in Trenton was an okay place to work initially, with manageable duties and decent teamwork. However, since the new director of care management was hired, the environment has gone downhill. Her leadership style feels extremely micromanaging and often inappropriate. The previous manager, who had been with Capital Health for over 23 years, resigned, and many staff believe this was due to the director’s approach. From interactions I personally witnessed, the tone used toward management felt belittling and unprofessional. There is also little support for staff development and training, which is disappointing for a hospital that promotes itself as an educational institution. Morale is low, many employees are quitting, and turnover remains very high. I am sad of leaving this position however I can no longer cope with the leadership style and the lack of respect for my area of expertise. 


Capital Health was/is a great place to work! As the Director of Guest Relations, I was responsible for the design and implementation of the patient satisfaction and guest services division for a two hospital health system. Under my leadership, my department built a successful concierge service (At Your Request). The success of this program, ultimately lead our hospital to receive a national award for "Commitment to Excellence" for most improved Patient Satisfaction Scores at the Press Ganey National Client Conference held in Orlando, Florida in 2014. 

After 27 years, I left to relocate to another state with my husband for his new Global VP role in the pharmaceutical industry. The hardest part of the job was leaving. The best part of the job was helping patients, their families and the staff have a pleasant experience in our facilities and building programs to support that effort.

Excellent opportunity to build nursing skills/expertise and patient interactions. Opportunities to meet and make new friends in the career that you're within.  Constant change/shifts in job responsibilities. Policies and procedures changing constantly. High turnover rates in some departments. Nursing slowly losing autonomy in some areas. Scheduling for on call is mandatory in some departments. Shortage of staffing leads to the use of the on call staffing.
The benefits are plus - you will be paying some of the coverage. There is job security at this point in time. It is like most hospitals now, becoming more corporate. Striving to survive in the corporate world. The hospital itself has come a long way.

I enjoyed working with the front line providers at Capital Health. Unfortunately there was constant turn over in the quality department where I worked. The VP for the department was wonderful however she was a Premier consultant and the assignment was time limited. I felt like the changes made during her tenure would revert back to a culture that did not support patient centered care in a safe, learning work culture. I was able to promote Just Culture philosophies and assist in increasing incident/event reporting. I enjoyed the teaching environment with medical students and residents. I was disappointed in the lack of industry standard health information technology and the potential continued delays in upgrading to systems that were safer overall.

Capital Health is a great company to work for. It all depends on the department you work for. Managers can be a bit rude and unprofessional....a constant lack of communication was an ongoing issue.  There were additional job duties added to my job description without advance notice due to being understaffed and job title was changed out of the blue.  Coworkers are always willing to step in and help each other out if possible. I work for the medical offices and whenever the office is closed for national holidays, they use 8hrs of your PTO which is annoying. Overall, the company is great, just watch the office/department. After a year you're eligible to transfer which I did :)

A typical day of work involved working with pharmacists and technicians; preparing oral and intravenous meds for distribution to patients on nursing floors; stocking and filling med carts for delivery; some billing; computer entries; telephone call monitoring and screening; assisting pharmacists in preparing meds. I learned new skills and techniques; and how to time manage my duties. My work culture was always working in a clean, pleasant, environment; and clinical setting. The hardest part of my job was walking and standing on my feet between 8 or more hours per day. The most enjoyable part was free lunches and workshops to acquired CE Credits; and getting wonderful work reviews.

Capital Health has been a great employer to me over the last couple of years. The environment is supportive and educational at all times. Working in the emergency has been a great learning experience where no patient is the same and the care given is specific for each patient. The staff has always been accessible if help is needed. Working here has made me a better nurse overall but shaped my critical care skills. I love helping people when they are at their worst and knowing my care has improved their outcome. The company was very flexible during my time in school with scheduling and working around my needs. I am sad to leave but am pursing a new career path since graduating.
