Working as a care manager at Carolina Outreach taught me a great deal about perseverance, client advocacy, and problem-solving. Unfortunately, most of that growth came from necessity rather than meaningful guidance or support. Structured training was minimal, and management was largely unavailable or unresponsive when challenges arose.

Caseloads were extremely high, and the focus on meeting productivity quotas often overshadowed the quality of care provided to clients. When I sought feedback and support to manage these demands more effectively, my concerns were met with criticism and penalization instead of collaboration. Management frequently emphasized being approachable, but in practice, bringing up legitimate issues felt unsafe and was often discouraged.

While I am grateful for what I learned from my clients and colleagues, the lack of leadership support and unrealistic workload expectations made it a difficult environment to succeed in. The most valued I ever felt by management was when I submitted my resignation letter and they tried to negotiate me staying. I would strongly advise prospective care managers to ask detailed questions about training, supervision, and caseload expectations before joining the tailored care management department.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Very supportive supervision from CST Team Lead supervisor.  Flexible schedule.  Excellent onboard trainings and CEU’s.  Enjoyed working with the client population..

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Trying to get 28 billable hours in a week to meet the expectation of 56  billable hours per pay period.  Always pressured to meet billable hours expectations .  Bringing work home to do every night and worked weekends 80% of the time, again, trying to meet standards. Favoritism shown to some staff members from newly hired Clinical Director.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I rarely went  into the office preferring to work from home.  I went once a week for team meetings and that was basically it.  The building the office is located in is old and is in need of renovating.  Did not feel comfortable there. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I kept a busy schedule.  I typically started seeing clients at 9:00 trying to schedule at least 5 clients a day.  So, basically seeing clients for 5 hours, and traveling at least 3 hours a day.  I would get home and have notes to write to have them documented  within 24 hours.  My days were long and very stressful.

The most toxic work environments I have ever experienced. While the company presents itself as professional, the reality behind the scenes is very different.
There is a serious lack of boundaries in the workplace. Coworkers freely involved themselves in personal matters that had absolutely nothing to do with work, creating an uncomfortable and invasive atmosphere. Gossip was normalized, oversharing was constant, and professionalism was not enforced. This behavior was not only tolerated but allowed to continue without consequence.
Management failed to intervene or protect employees from these unhealthy dynamics. Concerns were brushed off, ignored, or treated as insignificant, which made it clear that employee well-being was not a priority. Instead of addressing toxic behavior, leadership allowed it to fester, making the environment emotionally exhausting and stressful.
The job itself was overshadowed by constant tension and discomfort. No employee should feel anxious, drained, or unsafe because of workplace culture.
I would strongly advise anyone considering a position to seriously evaluate the company’s culture, boundaries, and management support before accepting an offer. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I had a great experiencing working with the Charlotte office! The directors and supervisors are fair and approachable. As a provider working in the field I received great support. The team had a high turnover but the work is not for everyone you truly have to have a heart and calling to work with the mentally disabled. Overall this is a great company, initially there were some minor issues with leadership but once I voiced my concerns they were immediately addressed and changes made to improve outcomes in management and certain practices. I’d work for them again without a doubt and only left for another opportunity that I thought I would gain more skills but caught more of a headache. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I can’t recall a stressful moment honestly. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly and family oriented. Great team players.

I enjoy working with clients and it is very meaningful job. I met some excellent coworkers who know what they are doing and who genuinely care about clients. I learned a lot from very intense clinical experiences. 

However, it is low paid and my team has a very toxic dynamic. As a result, co-workers who care about clients are easily burned out and treated badly by some co-workers/leadership, and then they left. Coworkers who are not responsible get away from it and stay here to make free money, and the worst part is, they manipulate and attack people who genuinely care about what they are doing. 

When my team was led and composed by more caring co-workers, I loved my job. But with my current team and leadership, it was ruined. 

Clinicians are WONDERFUL. Management are too removed from clinical work and highly unethical, saying out loud that they do not care about employees' care, only clients, but then undermine work with clients. 

Clinicians are trained to bill/document in one way and reprimanded later for doing it that way to create the illusion of poor performance and to justify not allowing staff to advance, get a raise, etc.  This is very common in the Triangle sites.  Do NOT get on management's radar, even for good work.  This can come back if there is any dip in productivity.

A typical day at Carolina Outreach is getting calls early from clients demanding their money or complaining about not having housing. What would make the day better would be having the support and resources from the site manager and others in management. When you start working at Carolina Outreach, you are hit with a plethora of trainings and meetings; then they expect you to meet clients and submit progress notes to build up your billing. If you're looking for a place to get your feet wet and then move onto bigger and better things, sure Carolina Outreach is the place.It could be better, if they give you the resources and support to help you help the clients. 

I valued my work, but if you're interested in contributing to a company and bringing your ideas to the table and earning a fair wage, then find a different company where your opinion and value will TRULY be appreciated. Carolina Outreach has a toxic work culture. You work hard here for little money and senior leadership doesn't value its employees. Morale is low. Turnover is constant and this impacts client care. I'm surprised Alliance hasn't seen more of a negative impact on the clients yet because it's obvious that senior management is running the agency into the ground with the amount of employee turnover I saw there. You're better off working at another company to get your clinical experience right out of grad school.

Carolina Outreach was my first job after grad school. They take the time to provide so much training that in your first 90 days of employment, you have finished most of your needed ceu’s for licensure. Being a recent grad, this was so needed for the transition into real world. They broke things down so thoroughly that they even explained how to sign your name with credentials. Supervision was included as well which is so worth it since it’s $50/hour or more! I felt heard during meetings and saw they took what I was saying and implementing due to the outcomes afterwards.

Management had an open door policy, promoted education for CEU's and promoted self efficacy. Open to hearing employees suggestions and conversations. I loved the population that I worked with on the ACT Team and the team was there for one another. Cohesive team, Team Lead was fair and had open door policy. We started with morning meeting, learned so much about SPMI population, no complaints about management. I loved working with my team mates and with the population we served. The most difficult part was frustration with the system since reform and lack of resources for homeless veterans and civilians.
