This is a good entry level position for a student to get experience while going to school and if you get full time status priority is made for students via scheduling. Tuition Reimbursement is only  one thousand a year though. Pay is not competitive  for the area and often lower than other facilities. Restraint trainings are provided once yearly but the skill set is not practiced throughout the year making dangerous situations for employees who do not do frequent enough take downs.  Infection control is not always a priority as sometimes patients are admitted and not thoroughly evaluated due to high patient turnover rates. employees are exposed to MRSA on dirty chairs and surfaces that patients have utilized, lice, bed bugs and scabies. similar to most health care facilities except that. Policies and procedures regarding how these are to be handled are not always followed. Work load is extremely high per employee, partially because of high employee turnover rate and the company Is still running on a paper system which  slows all documentation. There are very few long term employees left working for the nursing department which make shifts difficult.  new employs are still learning their duties on busy psychiatric floors. This is a great job if you are looking to gain experience., but if you have experience I would look else where. There is some new management that have been making some streamlined type changes but I fear they are fighting an uphill battle as they are always short handed and their work load is to large to handle per employee hired.

Cedar Hills Hospital is a company purely focused on profit and cutting expenses everywhere they can get away with. This is a company with short term goals to "sell out" to a larger healthcare corporation. Proper staff training, patient care, supplies, and benefits are all very poor with a focus on more of "what can we get away with" to earn immeadiate profit. Until recently we have never passed many state and federal regulated inspections. We have to "flip the hospital upside down" to appear like a legit facility. Full time status with benefits are rare as this hospital relies on PRN staff who work full time hours with no benefits. Benefits for full time members are very poor . Breaks are few and far between. Management holds the attitude that if everyone learned to work harder there would be plenty of time for breaks.
Patient care is non exsistant, we sedate people until thier insurance runs out. We operate under the mask of a "crisis only" facility and therefor any real care patients need has to be found somewhere else. When census gets low Cedar Hills calls all former patients " to see how they are doing" and if they need to come back for free medication until thier insurance runs out again.
The positive things about this place is the people who work there are friendly, mostly all very young brand new nurse grads in thier late 20's. Cedar Hills makes a decent place to get a 1st year experience, but most people move on very shortly after.

Most enjoyable: the patients and some co-workers. 
Staff are expected to self-teach, somehow knowing what what to learn before having any job description. Staff are told to look on the intranet for this info. The job description found was inaccurate.  
Management:  Provide a list of tasks, duties, what to learn before training is over.
If an employee, especially a brand new employee is eager to learn, provide the training. Ask how it's going with co-workers. 
Tell people what they are being hired to do: don't switch roles days after hiring. Do not lie.
When management tells a candidate that they will inform the candidate of the hiring decision by a certain date, they will be more trusted if they follow through instead of  informing the candidate of the decision weeks later.
HR: tell people that they need to schedule an appt for the pre-employment drug screen. Communicate. Don't avoid questions about the hiring process. Answer when the candidate asks if they are hired.
Don't fire new staff who are highly motivated but set up for failure.

Staff from other disciplines approached me when alone in the shared office. They were distressed: patient follow up appointments on their discharge plans were in the past: that this happened every week. According to the training video, lack of adequate discharge planning contributes to completed suicides. Another staff person referred to the poor communication. They seemed to approach with the intent to be supportive.

They say there is a short work day but that is ONLY if you are willing to take your work home. There is absolutely no work-life balance what so ever. I learned that not everyone has an empathetic and kind heart, even in the MH professional world. 

Everyone was so busy pounding away the excessive work required there was almost zero camaraderie, unless you were at the printer; which that was constantly broke down and gave you a minute of stress but time to say hello to your fellow co-worker. 

Management would avoid you like the plague. I was even told "come find me" after requesting to meet with my supervisor for over two weeks.  The guide book they provided was extremely vague and  then when I continued to use it, I was told it was outdated and needed to be revamped with no updates for over two months. Management were not on the same page and the three parties who would later, much later, check over your work had different ideas of how the work should be presented; which meant you were correcting your work 3X's and 3 different ways. The management was condescending and flat out disrespectful. 

The hardest part of my job was when a new co-worker came into my office, crept into the corner, and began crying her eyes out due to lack of support from the management side and lack of guidelines in place to follow.

Most enjoyable part of my job was being able to help those with MH needs. 

Yes, the negative reviews that you read on this board, are true;  this hospital is understaffed, the management is marginally competent, and there is a cliquish culture at the managerial level.  
There is a constant turnaround of nurses, CEOs, practitioners, department managers, you name it. There is an aggressive corporate culture that nurtures quantity, high bed occupancy, unsafe hospital layout as well as low staffing ratios.  The Nursing Department is managed by these extremely ambitious, cut-throat, 9 to 5 nurses that five years ago finished a two year nursing degree program, pretending that they know what they're doing, and not able to perform a simple nursing task.  It is quite amusing but also disturbing to observe how incompetent, some managers are in this hospital.
In regard to staff safety, since this is a lock-down facility, there are numerous complaints brought to the the attention of previous CEOs as well as of DON, Administrators, etc.  Nothing has been done!  There are violent, aggressive patients that have physically assaulted staff members and to this day, the hospital refuses to provide the necessary safety barriers, to protect staff.  The reason is corporate image!
No, this is not a safe place to work as a nurse.  Only if you are desperate, bills are piling up on you, you are an ignorant and don't care about your safety or just willing to be used and abused.

Poor hospital management...cares more about filling the beds than if it is safe to do so. Dangerously high nurse-to-patient ratios. Dangerously short staffing total number (lacking a sufficient number of both nurses and technicians). Very high employee turnover. Lack of supplies and equipment to properly and safely do your job. Poor technology utilization...most units do not even have a computer. All nursing paperwork must be written by hand on every patient...not even a computer to use as a resource (medications, patient care info, looking up phone numbers, etc.). Very poor investment in employees, such as advancement, certifications, and education. No reimbursement for things the company/hospital could benefit from (continuing education, board certification in specialized areas, ACLS/PALS, etc.). Accepts high acuity patients but does not prepare staff to care for them with neither skills nor adequate medical equipment. Hires PRN, and works full time so they do not have to pay for health insurance and PTO. Very little teamwork between day and night shift. Staff turnover is high for a reason. 

I worked as an Social Worker/Therapist for close to 3 years at this job. However I couldn't work more than 22 hours a week or they would have to pay for benefits to me. I provided services to four different populations and they are as follows:
1) Soldiers with PTSD
2). Patients with mental or emotional issues
3). Religious Patients
4). Patients with addiction issues

I had a very different responsibility to each one of these groups of patients. I did groups for each one of these patients and the groups were evidenced-based. 
The groups addressed the issues of each group of patient. In a typical day the above are the services that I provided.
I learned the most about the soldiers with PTSD and exposure therapy. (Cedar Hills is now under new management) Cedar Hills management was or felt to me that they did not know what they wanted to do. However when I had a conversation with anyone in management they seemed very smart individually, it was difficult to tell who the boss was at times.
Co-workers got along well. The hardest part of the job wasn't even the job it was not having a schedule and regular work hours.
The most enjoyable part of the job was everything about it except for the no benefits thing.

Into the fire and out of the pan. Management non existent and don't even bother returning calls or showing up to meetings where you have many concerns and questions needing answered. Once you have a set schedule, don't ever expect them to change it for anything. Job security is high risk, due to the nature of the patients you interact with and hardly any security there to back you up which leaves their employees vulnerable, particularly the techs on the floor who get paid the least. The pay is laughable for such a hazardous job and they hire four foot tall people as 'security' staff which makes you hardly feel safe. Nurses hate their jobs here and make everyone around them miserable because of it. This isn't a mental health facility wanting to make people better, it's a business that just put people in beds and kick them out without so much as helping them at all.

There’s lots of flexibility with scheduling, depending on what department you’re in.  They also hire for PRN positions.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Shared workspaces are cramped and don’t allow for providers to interact with patients one-on-one.  Additional office space would be beneficial for patients and staff.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
This varies from department to department.  In general, teams tend to work in silos, rather than there being a collaborative approach to patient care.  Collaboration is attempted but it’s difficult because the environment is so fast-paced.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Clock in and immediately get to work.  Keep working non-stop until the end of the shift.  Working here is either loads of fun or incredibly stressful, depending on your attitude and work ethic.

In the past the management put pressure on employees to make unethical decisions. Management has changed since I was there. The focus was on filling hospital beds and making a lot of money. There was a lot of pressure put on all sorts of people in different positions to help come up with criteria for patients to remain in the hospital as long as possible to make sure that all beds were full. There were a lot of great people that worked there, but the unethical culture by management was so sad, so disappointing, and just not right. Some of the wings of the hospital were more functional than others based on various dynamics. Limited desks for staff to work at. Poor working conditions. A lot of dysfunction between staff and management.
