Chase Brexton Health Care

      I worked at Chase Brexton as a Medical Assistant. The clinical experience itself was rewarding; providers were kind, patients were diverse, and I genuinely enjoyed supporting quality care. Unfortunately, the leadership culture made it difficult to stay. Management often ignored safety and workflow concerns, applied policies inconsistently, and responded defensively when issues were raised. Some staff were held to higher standards than others, which created tension and distrust.

       Pay is very low for the amount of work expected. After leaving, I joined a larger organization with a nearly $5 per hour increase, less stress, and far better communication. The difference was clear: supportive managers, strong teamwork, and genuine staff appreciation; during MA Week, we even received gifts every day of that week.

       If Chase Brexton improved pay equity, accountability, and fair management practices, it could be a great place to work. Until then, I can’t recommend it. To put it in perspective, I resigned on the exact day of my 90-day evaluation, even though I was eligible for a raise and a $1,000 sign-on bonus. That decision alone should say a lot about the work environment. 

My first week of work I just knew this was not a good place to work..The patients are great and so are the Doctors but everyone else is rude and lacking..So much departmental dysfunction and ghettoism's..The Columbia office is the worse of them all. Director of operations is prejudice and very vain, she manipulates other departmental heads to follow her lead she's a true mastermind of manipulation. She hires only all AA female MA's whom are mostly unprofessional and so ignorant. Before I left they bullied a Case manager whom actually was very good at her job and got along with everyone, they informed the entire office to ignore this young lady and to not work with her, Im not sure why but it was a big deal and I am sure the entire job was behind her mistreatment. The Case manager department has a bully whom bullies everyone even the manager. Yes, Bullying takes place in this form of environment.  If anyone got caught speaking or working with this lady they would get fired. Please be very cautious of this place it will cause you mental stress. the salary is great but its not worth the drama that comes with the job. Be wary of discrimination and racial issues. I am confident that patients are aware of the lack of diversity in departments.

I worked as the population health care coordinator, working to advance population health initiatives across all clinic locations. The only reason I left was to start a fellowship in Chicago. Chase Brexton is truly a mission driven organization that embodies its mission to serve our most vulnerable community members. It is person centered, innovative, and I found so much joy working with care teams, patients, and leaders to improve care delivery for the better. While Chase Brexton does not have the resources of a large health system, for an FQHC, it is very innovative in its own right. We implemented onsite diabetic retinopathy screenings, remote hypertension monitoring, and have plans for much more going forward. Our population health team is very large and has so many cool innovations going on. As a nurse, I always wanted to work in community health, for a company that valued care transformation and whole person care. Chase Brexton is a diamond in the ruff and I truly loved my team and my time there. So, when you are brunt out from high patient ratios, managers that don’t care about you, and hospital politics, apply here! 

The patients and fellow coworkers (not managers) who are true to the mission (really true, not just surface true) are the only reasons to stay at this clinic. The CEO,  Senior Leadership Team and the Board are SO FAR removed from what their employees actually do for them on a day to day basis that they continue to make terrible decisions and put profit before patient care. They view the clinicians as lazy, whiny, and don't take the effort to highlight their extremely talented delivery of care. You have an HR department that bows down to the CEO's directions and ignores employees, a completely absent Board of Directors who also bows down to the CEO regardless of what he does (like fire five managers in an attempt to interrupt union organizing), and an overall lack of genuine interest in knowing the employees who aren't in the 2nd floor administrative cubicles. 

I would not recommend working here.

Typical Day at work:
My daily duties consisted of checking in and out patients and verifying their insurance to ensure their services were being covered.

What I Learned: 
I learned many new medical terms and services, how to type more efficiently and effectively, and how to interface with people who are in need

Management: 
They have alot on their hands and day to day things are never easy. They can miss things often

My Coworkers:
My peers were very dependent upon me being the most experienced. However they did work hard.

Hardest Part of the job:
Trying to balance my administrative duties with my Customer service duties. I had the most time consuming and difficult duties to try and finish in 7.5 hours while at the same time checking in/out patients. Sometimes 200 in a day

Most enjoyable part of the day: 
When a patient compliments me on the work i do and how much a great help i am to them and the company

They paint a beautiful picture, make you feel as if you are genuinely apart of something great! Don’t get me wrong what they try to do for those in need is fantastic. But that should also be passed along to their staff. The ones that help makes the gears shift every day. After you come on board and the dust settles, the masks come off, and not one person was who they appeared to be. Such a disappointment. Supervisors are very unorganized, and are never available when needed. Such a shame, the potential to be great is there, but they should re-evaluate their current staff members, and weed out the ones who do not really share the same vision, goals, and who just lack common courtesy. But if you enjoy a chaotic environment, supervisors who are never around, and good ole fashioned office drama, then hey look no further then Chase Brexton!

Chase Brexton Health Care is an organization which spreads over Maryland to include 7 sites.  I started as a consultant to assist organization with pending Joint Commission visit.  Enjoyed Chase Brexton so much that I started work as Quality Improvement Manager.  Within a year, the Director of Operations position became available upon which I was hired.  I have been instrumental in developing policies and procedures, developing care teams to meet a diverse group of patients from the uninsured to the insured, across all age groups and managed quality metrics to improve outcomes for our patients and constantly looking for ways to improve work flow processes. A typical work day is dealing with resource management and to facilitate a safe, efficient work, happy work environment.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The schedule was the best part. Coming from bedside nursing, it was nice to be able to work 8 hours and potentially have off on holidays and weekends

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The management was the worst part. There was without a shadow of a doubt favoritism shown and workplace bullying at the nursing and MA level. Several members of management lacked professionalism

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They need to better vet the leadership team. The nurses and MA’s worked well together along with the doctors and PA’s

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Calling patients with results. Providing education in person. Giving injections

I would not recommend this place to anyone to actually work.  When I first started this was a new and very different environment for me.  It brought me out of my comfort zone.  It helped me personally learn to accept everyone for whom they are and not to judge people based on their life and decisions they make.  Over the past years the environment has become hostile.  They had a group of providers work off the job and never came back last summer.  They had employees protesting outside the job before and after work.  They had to bring a union in to make them feel if they have some job security.  In retaliation for unionizing they job fired 5 managers just saying the company is going in a different direction.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Love the mission of the company. The team I am a part of makes it better

Meeting the needs of the patients. Having patients with a lot of needs

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There is a sense of teamwork, expectations that you work hard. There is also a union for a lot of positions which is helpful if you ever feel like you are not being heard 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Work late 1 day a week. Come to work see patients, work on notes, do crisis assessments when needed
