Chicago Behavioral Hospital

This place is extremely dirty and corrupt. It is often manifested by bed bugs and other insects and the air conditioning does not work. The staff openly talks about their physical relations, substance use and other inappropriate topics. The administration and staff only provides special care and attention to those patients whose families are highly involved in their treatment; if the patient is homeless, severely mentally ill, etc., they are treated like trash and kept for as long as possible for their insurance money. Often times, the patients that are highly functioning, meaning they presents with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety and trauma are roomed with highly acute (psychotic) and aggressive patients, just to fill up the number of beds. Some of the staff disrespects transgender patients and refers to them by their incorrect pronouns as well as jokes about eating disorders by making comments such as “I wish I had one of those”, referring to wanting to lose weight. There are some nurses that abuse their power by purposefully provoking patients and making them upset, just to be able to give them a shot and knock them out so they do not “have to deal with them”. Patients that are not oriented to who they are, where they are or even what year it is are forced to sign consent forms even though they do not have the ability to understand what they are signing, and if they do not do so, they are automatically reported to court even though they do not understand what consequences this brings.

This is the most unprofessional company I have ever worked for. I was embarrassed to tell people I worked here. 

Management is filled with disrespectful people who don’t have the best interest in mind for staff & patients. The CEO is very disrespectful to staff. The training is non existent (I didn’t have a trainer when I started, I had to learn everything 95% on my own which caused problems). Any decent staff they have they can’t get to stay because everyone leaves. I worked there over a year and my department had multiple directors/supervisors leave on bad terms, and therapists were constantly leaving. It became a revolving door at the hospital in terms of staff. I wanted to work here because I wanted to make a difference in a positive light but that wasn’t happening at all so I had to leave. There’s a reason why they are unable to keep staff. 

Benefits are okay, nothing to write home about. The biggest issue there is management & it’s sad to see. As stated above, I (and many others) became embarrassed to say we worked there because of how unprofessional it is. I would avoid at all costs. 

There are some really great employees at this facility. They give their all every day and truly care for the patients. But there are too many people in management who couldn't care less. All they see is dollar signs and the patients are the least of their concerns. There are managers in some departments who believe mentally ill people are weak and/or faking their condition for pity. Obviously completely ignorant  of the field they work in. There's no room for growth, employees are rarely acknowledged for their efforts and managers are allowed to behave recklessly. Not a good place to work. You can find something better if you're looking for a place where you can feel good at the end of the day. It's a shame for the patients who go there for help but at least the employees with heart help the patients (most techs and nursing staff). There are some incredible doctors here, too. But the management makes it a pretty miserable place to work.

Worked at this facility for a short time. Orientation was very poor. Management was also poor. Facility was dirty. Had windows so dirty you couldn't even see out of them. Had to call for toilets and floors to be cleaned my first day of working there. Gave an unbelievable amount of patients to there nurses. Liked some of the staff members like Mallory who was very good. One nurse named Lynn was very cold and dismissed patients concerns. She riled pts up and some of them acted out violently. She was not supportive to staff either. She did not care about the patients.New orientees got fed up fast. There  Were very hard working nurses there. They did not get the appreciation they deserved. They were lacking supplies many times. It did seem to be a vibe of just making a profit. Some of the time management skills of the administrators were lacking.  I ended up resigning but still think about the patients and some of those overworked nurses.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Friendly people, good DON.
The company has a good working and friendly environment. 
Employees care about one another which makes it look like a family. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It's when allegations are made about someone, it happened to me one time and I felt bad.
Out of no where a patient wrote something  unbelievable about me, I felt so bad.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's a culture of do your part, do what you're supposed to, if you fail, call for help and work as a team if things go astray. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy day, with some break interludes when patients are resting. 
In most cases, its relaxed environment, normally peaceful day.

The main problem with this hospital is that the top level management/leadership has no clue what they're doing and can't follow through on anything. This is a place where profits come first and patient/employee welfare and safety come third (no clue what even comes second). The only reason the place hasn't completely spiraled into chaos is that they do know how to turn a profit and they screen their patients/clients as to not get the worst of the worst from the Chicago area. Employee turn around is very high and that's not likely to change.

I am very well pleased thus far with my employment at Chicago Behavioral Hospital.  I appreciate that I am able to practice what I've learned in my education and learn more with classes to enhance my career.  I am thankful to be able to train dual diagnoses patients in learning how to cope with their DSM diagnoses and in managing their rehabilitation to substances used to self-medicate, informing the patients of coping skills that will enable them to manage their recovery.

If i could rate this hospital no stars i would! Horrible place to work. Very dangerous! I have been left by myself on various shifts to care for patients! Many employees have gotten fired. They dislike people when you stick up for yourself. Do not apply. There is no leadership, management is terrible and scheduling is atrocious! They do not care about your well being here. You are floated throughout the entire hospital. They lied and promised me that i would be in one department. They are liars!

High work load, stressful toxic environment. Worked her for 4 years and only really stayed for my coworkers. Management is uncaring and the hospital is money hungry. It’s all about accepting anyone with a pulse regardless how combative and dangerous they are. Management is very unsupportive of staff. This place is run like a jail and they do not care about staff or patients :(

Working at Chicago Behavioral Hospital is great for flexibility and learning experience but the growth within the company isn't there at all. When you ask to be promoted or moved to a different position they will ignore you or tell you that they need you to stay where you are at even though you are well qualified for other positions in the hospital. Benefits suck and they say you can get overtime which is a lie.
