Back in June, I was really excited when I was accepted for the role as a cashier at the Village store. I hoped to work there a long time, until I was interested in something else. Just to have some money for college and for personal expenses. Something productive to do over the summer, instead of just sitting around at home.
But the experience turned out to be so bitter and it did leave that taste in my mouth, even after I left and still now. 

The manager I was assigned to made me feel anxious every given moment. She insisted that I shouldn't be anxious or insecure, but always had the tendency to make a huge deal over the simplest matters. Instead of motivating me, she always teased me and at the end, I was hopeless and going there to work...I started to hate it. I couldn't stand the sight of it. I always made mistakes.I tried, I really tried, but I just wasn't adapting. At the end, it was happiness vs. money. I couldn't possibly deprive myself of happiness to work at a place that I didn't even feel content in. I always mini had panic attacks and my anxiety was through the roof. 

It was my very first cashier job and the manager I trained with expected me to learn everything by day 3. Without any valid self assessment to know each and every duty perfectly before ringing up customers, I was quickly put to a cash register. I understand that it's a fast paced work environment, but it couldn't hurt to teach everything properly and train instead of putting somebody at the cash register right away. Especially if they had no prior experience. The customers were, of course, not all of them,but some were entitled and spoiled. Typical Bourgeois of Manhattan. One customer expected me know all produce codes, when he knew I was a trainee and it was my 4th day. But this wouldn't have happened, if the management was more organized with training the employees. 

The part about favoritism is also somewhat true. I was assigned to work with an experienced cashier, who gave me attitude and had a huge superiority complex, instead of actually helping me. She was assigned to help with packing, but instead of assisting me, she made sure she had a badge of honor by embarrassing me in front of customers. At the end, it felt like she was being one of the managers.

I know Citarella takes pride in being a fancy seafood market and often celebrities are spotted there and rich people shop there since it's located in the Village, which the management always makes a huge deal out of, but they should honestly show more respect to their employees, as well. Employee satisfaction counts, too, but the management seems to forget that sometimes in hopes of profit. 

Overall, I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

A typical day is work is fast paced. It is organized but comes at you very fast. You are part of a team where one must pull his/her own weight so that the team can work more efficiently.  You are faced with task that you have to solve immediately while constantly submitting to the needs of the customer. Management is sharp and very efficient. They need to have a ready-for-any-situation attitude at all times and are required to think on their feet a lot. Its a very reactive environment amongst the workers too. The hardest part of the job is probably opening shifts, where you will be required to be there at 5 (sometimes 4 during holiday season) in the morning. The work load can be taxing, and negative interactions with customers will sometimes try your patience. The most enjoyable part is the fast pace environment that makes the time go by. Before you know it, its time to leave.

Turnover is very high, with only a handful of long term employees who have been there decades. Departments are regularly understaffed or left completely unstaffed even during peak times.

The management is good, but inconsistent. The different managers on duty different days have different policies, all of which are different from what corporate says.

The best part of working at Citarella is the customers, who are generally friendly and respectful.

The break room is tiny and crowded, and only one restroom for each gender is available. The men's restroom has a barely-functional toilet, and male employees are required to put used toilet paper in the trash can. I wish I was making this up.

The employee break room at the Citarella Village location is absolutely HORRENDOUS. 1/100 would recommend ANYONE working there unless they were about to be evicted. Dirty environment to eat.  About 5 chairs employees have to sit on crates to eat lunch in their hands. The foldable tables are crusted with old food. The foldable chairs are in terrible condition. The fridge is dirty. The water is dirty. The bathroom is dirty. The lockers are dirty. If you can think about it… ITS DIRTY. The management micromanages and watches you almost all day. If they’re micromanaging employees they need to be micromanaging the cleanliness of that store!!!! 

the coworkers are helpful, respectful, and are hard workers. Management is definitely strict and watch you like a hawk. The store could relocate closure to the main part of town. The designing of the parking lot is terrible. The most busiest would be during lunch hours other than that it would be slow except holidays. You'd stand for long periods of times unless they have you do something. You cannot be seen standing and talking to one another! The store is highly expensive therefore you have to do everything for the "guest." some can be nice others not at all. The break room is too small and the locker rooms lack privacy (no doors). 

I wish I could write something more positive, alas I can't write as much I thought.
This place needs a revamp of the management team. They take their most loyal team members and run with their kindness, often asking them to do tasks you will never see them do, especially with them constantly on their phones.
There are multiple employees who are overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. These employees will be constantly asked to do things outside of the description of their job title, then they'll never see it on their reviews (if they get theirs) or in raises.
Enjoyed the company of my coworkers who felt the same as me. Wish they would stand up for themselves. 

This company stresses the fact that it is a “family environment” and I suppose that is true seeing as many people have been with the company for years. To that degree, there is opportunity for growth. However, Citarella should continue to hire internally because they haven't figured out how to skillfully train new members. There is a lot of information to internalize walking into this company, but in many ways you’re left to the wilderness and expected to adapt instinctually. The HR office is a complete headache. Citarella is a total waste of time. I’m not sure of how they’re going to open new stores in the future when the internal operations isn’t cohesive. It’s a revolving door for a reason.

Horrible pay, no incentive to work harder, everyone's gets same raise every year. The managers are the one getting appreciated while the bottom working hard. Very old time minded company. The supervisor are just very uneducated, unprofessional, and completely worthless. Only people who writes good thing about this company are the ones who are probably forced to write it by their managers. The benefits are not that great as they make it sound. If you plan on getting job here, then at least ask for double the pay rate bcz they will make you work you work hard. Apply only for manager post bcz they are not expected to do anything, just to walk around and wait for the shift to be over.

Sure the company salary is higher than the counterparts but it means you have to do the work that is normally done by 2 people. Not only you have to handle the Pastry department, but you eventually be trained to handle the deli as well which is not within the scope of your job title. Add to that being surrounded by lady bosses with low work ethics. That's why there's a high turn over rate at this department especially when you are new, some employees who have been there for so long act as if they are the owner/boss and would pass to you the dirty works. Most of the employees are nice & helpful but you would still encounter some who are like kids, very unprofessional & would fight in front of you. 

My first ever supermarket job and I regret choosing this company, the first few months here, it was not a bad place, but once they started switching out floor managers, whom bring their own rules and expectations, the workplace became negative! The company isn't very diverse, they hire mostly hispanic people, but nit many blacks, and when there are blacks hired, they do not last long. The company has very overt bias and favoritism that is pretty noticeable within the first few weeks of working, while some workers are expected to be productive at all times, the managers will turn a blind eye to an employee who stands around doing nothing or doing a simple task while more important things need to be done.
