Being a medical scribe at CItyMD is a wonderful exposure experience for any student wishing to become a physician, PA, or some form of nursing.  The level of exposure is great, the level of interaction with patients is greater than allowed in a public hospital, and on average the medical professionals that you work with are not only intelligent, but friendly.  
Unfortunately management and corporate make the job difficult.  There is poor paid time off which includes sick time and vacation time, and has to be earned before being requested (you earn approx 1.2 hours a week).  Severely understaffed in comparison to several years ago where the amount of work that was maybe split between 5-6 scribes of varying shifts over the course of a 12 hour work period is now 3 on average, doubling the work WHILE ALSO decreasing yearly merit based raises by half (despite not changing the grading/scoring method) .  Additional arbitrary rules that are not consistent from site to site, managers who wield giving or withholding PTO as a weapon make the work unnecessarily difficult.
From working full time 40 hours a week over 4 days to "full time" with a minimum of 32 hours a week over 4 days = same amount of money spent on travel while making 8 hours less money a week.  No consistent scheduling due to high turnover of employees resulting in management attempting to give a different schedule on a biweekly basis.  Constant harassment or holding small morning lateness (though not excusable) over an employee's head but no changes in management or scheduling or operations with consistent late night overtime (closing at 8 but leaving up to 2 hours later due to end of the night patients).  There is no cut off for patient registration thus allowing for last minute patients (if you close at 8pm but someone enters at 7:59pm, CityMD will allow them to register and be seen meaning that you may be there for several minutes to over a hour later than closing).
Additionally, CityMD has created a service like culture for medicine causing the many patients that they service, many of whom are already affluent and demanding, to believe that they are entitled to the medications and care that they request despite it not being in alignment with general medical practices or the CDC.  I have witnessed patients bully physicians on a regular basis for antibiotics and even cry when they have not received them.  The company is very present on Yelp and instead of standing by their employees (physicians, front desk, scribes, medical assistants) when a bad review is given, they reach out to the customer and apologize instead of educating the patient on why what they wanted was contraindicated and not the best form of treatment despite them believing they "know their body" and "only antibiotics take care of this".  There are many physicians who are on the Yelp website by full name having their reputation tarnished, with a CityMD response underneath apologizing for whatever may have occurred.  It is also not unlike for someone higher on the corporate ladder to call a scribe or MA to get their account of what happened in a patient room.  This last part is hard to explain but when it does occur, it generally leaves one feeling as if they "threw someone under the bus".
Lastly the company believes in being able to freely send their workers to other sites (usually within the same borough) if said site is short staffed for the day, but you must force their hand for them to compensate you for travel.  For example, say you were scheduled to work an 8 hour shift at the 96 street location but the Chambers location is in need of another worker and your location is not busy.  The company will attempt to contact you before your 8am 8 hour shift will begin so that you don't show up to your regular site but instead travel directly to the covering site, despite being several miles, without them having to pay to place you in a cab service.  Upon arriving (late because instead of planning to show up on time to 96th and 2nd Ave you must go all the way to Chambers Street) certain managers (who receive bonuses based on not having to give out too much overtime) will allow you to incorrectly clock in now late due to the additional travel that was no fault of your own.

P.S. maternity leave at this company, a medical company with multi-million dollar revenue, is absolutely atrocious and every individual involved (especially those with a background in healthcare or some form of social work) should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

My rating is higher than the sum of its parts because as someone who intends to be a healthcare provider, it is an unfortunately accepted fact that not every place that provides a great learning experience and resources for one's goals is a great working environment.  I learned so much about medicine an gained many connections that have already begun to follow me into my future medical career hence the 4 stars, but everything else that is not practicing medicine is made unduly stressful by the company.

Working here for over a year, I have witnessed the managers treat coworkers and myself like children. They tattle on you when you’re on your phone or reading, they will write you up for being late despite the computers being slow to log you in, they will transfer you to another site thats over an hour away and expect you to be there on time despite their call being 30 minutes before your shift starts, they will write you up if they don't like your “attitude”, they will ask you to do extra tasks that aren’t part of your role, they will change your schedule during the week so you never know when you’re actually supposed to work and will reprimand you if you don’t show up to a shift that was just changed that morning, you may get your schedule for the next month 2 weeks before the month starts or you may not know where you’re working on the 1st of the month until the day before. You’ll recognize many of the managers have no prior experience- and it shows by the way they treat their teams. There are no consistent rules and regulations and each manager will tell you something different. For example PTO approved by one manager can easily be reversed if another manager is covering the site for the day. Ask questions and they won’t get back to you in a timely manner. Question practices and you’ll have a target on your back. For a company that promotes “Being Kind” they sure aren’t kind to their employees.

If you’re prepared to be treated this poorly and get paid a wage that is no longer competitive then at least you’ll learn a lot from providers here who are knowledgeable and many of whom are willing to teach and explain encounters. The culture is incredibly toxic, the pay is not competitive anymore, the management is biased and absolutely will retaliate against you should you try and stick up for yourself.

Worked here for almost 2 years and it was great. PCR is front desk. Besides obviously greeting patients and putting them on the schedule, I was responsible for insurance claims, retrieving authorizations from insurance for imaging requests, referrals to specialists, calling 911 and being EMT liaison at times, and helping out with vitals and room placement. 

This was a very fulfilling job. I am a finance/business guy and worked here during college. My coworkers were all extremely ambitious. Everyone was going to either PA or Med school and was just extremely knowledgeable. They were all confident, head-strong and as smart (and smarter) than me - mind you I feel pretty intelligent!

Working with the doctors were pretty cool. The days were long, especially since 12-hour shifts are expected. This is good and bad because even before COVID, you work weeks are normally 4 days. But boy, doing two 12-hour shifts on back to back days wear you down after awhile.

Overall, really loved this place, the culture was great, benefits were fairly good. Pay was good to start but after comparing to others in the industry, it is fairly below average. I would not carve out a career for here unless you become site manager, but even then, do not stay here for more than 2 years. You will be paid handsomely if you use this as a stepping stone to other well known places, such as Weill Cornell.

Working at City MD is a great stepping stone to gain experiencing in the health care field. All you need to apply is customer services experience and there willing to teach you the rest. . You meet alot of friendly staff and some friendly ,mangers. The pay sucks  15.75 and that is  everybody starting pay, scribes, M.A and PCR but you get opportunity of over time,holiday pay on  holidays you work. If you dont work on holidays you dont get paid for anything.  Bonus every quarter but they tax it 50 percent  of it. raises every year (couple of cents) . free coffee, free snacks, free food once in a while. flexible hours. holiday party. sick days, and you get to accumulate pto.  easy to get a day off.  At first city md wasnt a  bad company to work  for until they started    opening up  more sites  and hiring  outside manager  with no experience in the health care field  that rude and nasty. Who  has no respect to there employees.  There so worry about opening  up sites and needing mangers to mange them they hired anyone and forgot that they used to hiring caring people. The hours I was promise when I was hired drop. I was promise 32 to 40. Its more like 30 34. SO basically thats forcing me to pick up extra hours at other sites to gain my hours back.  No set schedule.  At  time City Md is so draining  and  some days are longer than usual. Patients are allow to walk in  up until we close. So if we close at 8pm  and a patient walks in at 7:59pm we have to let the patient in.   My advise to you Work at City MD for a year to gain experience and after that go get a hospital job doing the same thing with hired pay and benefits. I guarantee  you be making more than they pay the assistant manager at city md.

CityMD started off great. I learned a lot for never working in the healthcare field. Over the year I was there it slowly started to decline as a company. They took away the 401k benefits, changed our insurance company, removed holiday pay for days that were once considered a holiday, and restructured the management chain. They promoted their trainers to management, yet didn’t consider them management. They dropped a ton of responsibility on them without the pay they desired. Sites were ran on minimal to no staff, yet we had to have great survey scores & low wait times. Instead of working on these and improving staffing, we had to decorating competitions… have the best birthday board, etc.  It was your typical corporation, running on short staff - order them pizza instead of getting them the help the need from overstaffed sites. We were expected to travel at a drop of dime to another site if upper management deemed it necessary with NO mileage payouts, even though there was a travel expense policy that said we were to be compensated when using our own vehicle. There was a ton of nepotism and favoritism and if you weren’t on upper managements good side… you were classified however they wanted to classify you. You could care about your job and doing it properly cause that made you too strong of a person, or a dictator. Yet corporate is all about following rules and policies… but don’t do that cause then you’re in the wrong. I don’t regret my time here but choose your time here wisely. 

CityMD is doing everything they can to support/motivate staff during Covid from pay increases, better benefits, more free food, shorter hours, longer breaks, monthly bonuses, etc. CityMD employees definitely deserve this and more for the risk they take and the insane volume increase during this pandemic. However, that does not stop employees from complaining. You shorten the hours, they complain that they're busier because all patients try to come in at the same time. You leave the hours alone and they complain that they are getting out too late. You give them wage increases, they say it's not enough. You give them longer breaks, they say they're still overworked when they're not on break. Eventually, CityMD needs to just tell people that they can leave if they don't like it here. We're in a pandemic and yes, work in a healthcare facility is hard. 

Why I mention this is because with all these changes, there is a big group of employees they seem to have forgotten- managers. As managers, we smile through disrespectful patients, ungrateful employees and disgruntled providers. As managers, we are actively carrying out job responsibilities of every site position daily. As managers, we are taking the initiative and sense of ownership to complete managerial tasks after work or on off days. We are tired and unhappy too. The only difference is that we won't make a big, useless fuss about it. Despite all our work, there are employees making more money than us. Great acknowledgement from district managers but no action from the company.

Always lying, lying about benefits- try to request pto and get days off made difficult and forced use of pto; 401k input from company match is now based off how company is performing and 1 payment made annually-sleazey; just to get your cme money you have to do there cme courses; double dipping and using your insurance to inflate there buisiness and get in summit's network ( employer has access to your health records if you use them), lying about the site that will be your home site; telling you that you will get your contracted hours but when citymd volume slows your put for less hours then you were. Sometimes forced to work 40-60hrs some weeks then 20-30hrs other weeks. Only a job that gives you stress and a headache. Thats why so many providers hate this place. And the bonus is sabotaged by short staffed clinics, long wait times, and new scribes because they can't keep a good scribe for anything. Everytime i go to work its stress and management micromanages about gossip and wants to tell you how you can improve with 3month quarterly reviews given the Daily lack of staff and negative outlook of working for citymd ( this job has declined in every way starting dec 2023 when they made changes). If you work at a busy site, and its short staffed you will be part scribe obtaining hx, taking vitals and provider portion- just fatigue and a headache; worst part 90 day resignation period

As a clinical assistant in the Aftercare Department, I am the right hand of the clinicians. I perform tasks such as, calling patients with lab results, creating service orders, calling in prescriptions, and maintain the quality of care by following up and completing patient information. I have learned a lot since I started working here. I learned different and effective ways to approach conflict. Working in  a healthcare facility, helped me to enhance my interpersonal skills and become more empathetic towards patient needs. It improved my multi-tasking abilities, as well as, how quickly and efficiently work is completed. I am now able to get a lot more work done under pressure than I was before working here. I believe that CityMD has a great management team. All staff in management are extremely helpful and patient. The overall environment is friendly and supportive. Everyone is ready to help out if needed. The hardest part of the job can be the workload that can pile up during the day due to the increasing number of patients that our facilities care for. However, the most enjoyable part of the job is to know that everything you do makes a difference in an individual's life. I believe what keeps me going is the mission our CEO has for healthcare to be accessible for any individual who seeks it. I am passionate about this vision and hope to be a part of it by continuing to deliver care and maintaining quality.

Good place for to gain initial clinical experience however can quickly become redundant. Majority of physicians are pleasant and happy to educate. Since patient demographic will never change, work environment improves if rest of staff is "mature" , helpful and if manager is responsible. Annual pay bump will get "capped" despite positive reviews which makes it appear insignificant (eg: exceeds expectation = $0.02 raise) Unlimited OT can be great depending on your POV but from personal experience it's more hectic because the places that are looking for extra help have higher volume of patients and higher taxes will make it feel pointless. Company's only concern appears to be expansion which may be at cost of its employees (eg: cheap equipment and under staffed) Company appears to "milk" as much work from every employee which can be an issue if you are a student applying for programs or have family responsibilities. You will likely never leave on time. Room for growth is available if you want it but if this is not the type of work you see yourself doing in the future then its best to stay for maybe 1-2 years at most if you are a clinical staff member. 

Advise: be very observant of your pay, your employee rights (read the handbook and memorize it) and how your manager(s) morally operates. Be mature and respectful and ready to work. Try not to let rude patients effect your daily/overall experience. Be mindful of how your actions effect others.

You’re expected to see at least four people an hour and you do get “graded” On how fast the total visit is even if it does not include clinical time like insurance registrations which can sometimes take 20 minutes. Typically, it’s a combination of 3x 12 hour shifts a week with a minimum of 4 weekend days a month. They definitely do cut corners to save costs like only supplying some sites with two providers while others are solo coverage at the solo coverage locations it varies but on and unlucky day you can see 70+ people. There is no definitive hardline for what cannot be seen at urgent care so don’t be surprised if people come in with stroke symptoms, chest pain, in DKA, miscarriage, or management of chronic illness like gout or copd. There have been several times where a patient will be waiting over an hour to be seen only for me to have to tell them that their concern is far too complex for urgent care- if time equals brain / heart you can see how damaging that can be. Often times “rush backs” are miss categorized so they’ll rush to place someone with allergic reaction for 3 days but naively let dizziness sit for an hour without telling anyone. As time goes on you can see the money grab as the more forms we are contracted to fill out get more and more complex (clearance for fostering/adopting children). You do get to pick 7 weekdays and 4 weekend days a month to block off. Generous PTO. If you’re not a fast charter you can easily take home 30+ charts that will be completed on your own unpaid time.
