A typical day in the testing center starts with opening the center.  Usually I am the first to arrive on the days that I work so I open up the center, unlock the filing cabinets that house the course exams and the placement exams.  Turn the proctor computers on, there are 4 in total.  There are 2 workstations that access the student workstations so the proctor can administer the exam.  The other 2 proctor computers are used to check students in, check emails, appointments.  The roster for the day is printed and the exams are then pulled and placed in a sorter.  We administer a few different types of exams for internal and external students as well as some professional certification exams.  In this job I have learned a great deal about academic integrity.  Students have been caught with writing on their body parts, using their cell phone, going to other sites on the computer that were not allowed, written notes.  One student was caught with a cheat sheet and ate it. We do interact with the Advisors and Disability Support on a regular basis which has afforded me the opportunity to learn about those departments as well.  The culture of the testing center is professional but relaxed. There's nothing hard about my job, it can get really busy at times, but when you know your job it goes smoothly.  I enjoy interacting with the students.  I've never had a direct conflict with any student so I'm proud of that.

I initially worked here as a peer tutor. I knew the material well enough to help plenty of people succeed in their classes. I learned how to go about different learning styles for different people. It wasn't a terrible experience. The biggest issue was with my supervisor. I had to tutor immediately after having back to back classes from 8 to 2:30. My classes ended at 2:30 and I was expected to start working at exactly 2:30. It was a nightmare. I would still get yelled at for being late despite explaining to her the issue. I would have to skip lunch, and if I was caught with food when I wasn't tutoring I'd be told to leave without pay for the day. I only stayed for one semester, but would never consider it again until management was replaced. I worked with CCBC again as a student work-study. I acted as an office assistant for one of the administrative assistants. She was wonderful and the work was fair. A lot of filing, sending emails, faxing, copying, and calling students about classes. This job was much more understanding of college demands along with work demands.

CCBC is a very productive work place which allows me to be very customer oriented due to the growing number of students that attend college. Somedays can be very stressfull with many situations that require me to assist student with not only school matter, but sometimes personal situations. I understand that we all have bad days and sometimes people want to vent, but by the time he or she reaches our Office they are irritated and frustrated. I must remain calm and be helpful to assist them the best way so that I don't feel like their frustration is directed towards myself. If it's uncontrollable then I direct them to our office manager. The manager is very compassionate and understanding in regards to employees well being and work habits. The manager not only maintains a good work ethic but she also knows how to be a friend. My co-workers are like friends and family. No matter what goes on at work, our friendship doesn't affect our relationship. I enloy talking with and working with my co-workers as well as other staff memebers on campus. I have created a good friendship beyond our institution walls.

Before being hired I was lead to understand that retirement was 25 years and we would be getting a raise in July.  It was reasonable for me to expect to work an extra five years toward retirement and the raise would help make up the $15k I was losing coming here.  Found out retirement is actual an unrealistic 35 years and I don't qualify for the raise.  So I'm out $15k and can retire when I'm 80.  Then my glasses where damaged during training.  I expected that I would be compensated for my damages.  Not happening,  i was told they are not required to do so and will not.  I can only get a new pair every 2 years. Uniforms are hard to come by as well.  I was given 1 pant and shirt to work 5 days a week in.  Thank goodness my fellow officers had some old beat up cloths they could donate to me.  So I currently got new uniform shirts 4 months later but still have to use pants with holes in the crotch.
  All that being said, it's a great place for a retired cop.  If you already have a retirement perfect place to pad it a little and stay busy.  Just need to last 10 years to be vested.

The social and communication skills I honed in all of the above capacities proved to be essential when I became a writing workshop instructor, professional peer tutor, and professional note-taker/scribe at the Community College of Baltimore County and a GED Instructor at the Community College of Beaver County. As a human resources recruiter and staffing manager in the staffing and retail industries, I found myself quite devoted as I was able to utilize the skills I honed as a supplemental, college instructor to mentor, help, and assist in providing resources to further others’ professional development as Human Resource Professional.

I consistently inspire trust and confidence in managers and peers. I am confident that becoming a member your organization would be an asset to my life-long educational, vocational, and learning experiences.

The library was simple enough, but what I really enjoyed was working with the students and teachers at CCBC. I like helping other people to achieve their goals and make their lives a little easier. A typical day would include letting teachers into board rooms, finding books or other resources for students, assisting students at the computers to either navigate the computer software or assist them with term papers. I learned the repetitiousness that comes with a simple job. The hardest part of the job was staying quiet for so long, especially when laughing with my fellow employees and students. The most enjoyable part of working at the library was helping the patrons and reading anything I wanted.

There is a lot to learn while in the role. Some enjoyable aspects are: helping students map out a clear path to their future, meeting interesting individuals, and having a deep sense of purpose. It's not clear why HR takes so long to respond to applications or even process new hires once an offer has been received (not a lot of common sense used in the processes for hiring). Management is okay. Burnout can easily be a problem as departments are either short-staffed or staffed with slightly incompetent people (who I'm assuming looked good on paper and said the right things to get hired). 

CCBC is wonderful. A typical day at work is answering phone calls from students/parents, guiding students in the direction of there teachers and eating homemade goodies co-workers may bring in.

It is truly a family oriented environment. Management is very organized and sticks to the book but gives appreciation at least twice a year to staff with an end of the term dinner or cookout.

The most enjoyable part of this job is knowing that you are not alone. If something is difficult or overwhelming co-workers will help you though it with no problem. This is a very supportive and love family.

 Hard-working -- Throughout high school, worked long hours in strenuous activities while attending school full-time
 Reliable -- Excellent attendance record; helped train newer employees.
 


n/aIn my years at CCBC I have come to know that my co workers arent just that, they have become my friends and my work family. They have brought me out of my shell and have taught me that i can talk to them about anything at all. A typical workday for me is not typical. Of course there is the everyday things that we are required to do (i.e registrations, answering questions and emails) but there also fun conversations that make the day not so boring and mundane. My work environment is a little melting pot. There is a little of everyone there. The hardest thing about my job is when "busy season" hits and we have mounds of reg forms to do but as a team we get it done with very few issues. My favorite part of the job is knowing I have a job to come back to the following day.
