CHC is a tremendous place to work.  It is mission driven that Healthcare is a right and not just a privilege.  If you do not like your work and approach it with passion and  if you do not really want to help a majority underserved population, or to work with a team then you should look elsewhere.  The people who make a difference here and make it the incredible organization it is and who stick around for the longest are those who are excellent at the work they do, give extraordinary care, and fully integrate themselves into their sites and into the inner workings of the organization.  

Some days are a breeze others are harder as with any population of people with significant Behavioral Health needs.  You can do innovative groups like a shared medical visit group with our on site nutritionist the PCP or lead a group on your on, for patients you are prescribing suboxone to keep them informed of strategies to cope with what has led them to use. There is of course mindfulness based meditation, CBT, DBT, all to get a little variety from prescribing medications, if that is what you are passionate about.  

Is there a particular population you want to do something special with? are you interested in doing research- well if you are willing to put in some of your own time to create the project and apply for IRB approval from our Quality Improvement Institute, then you have come to the right place. Do you do advocacy work or write, that would be encouraged here- no set additional time created to do so but if you are already doing it, they would be willing to help you find additional platforms for doing this work as the senior leadership like Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter, past CMOs like have testified on the Hill, even our lead nutritionist was able to get legislation in the books. Those people are here at your fingertips to pick their brains and they would be happy to. 

So if you want to make a difference at any scale, or even if you just want to come in every day and do your best treating and potentially giving medication to members of a population most in need of quality treatment and a moment of being treated with dignity in a world that often leaves them feeling ignored and less than human, then come to CHC. 

Those who leave after many years of service go on to do amazing work and stay in touch with current employees because they are leaving outstanding teams of people they miss.

Well meaning organization who's mission is to care for under privlaged.  Busy clinics with chronic understaffing ( like most health care organizations I guess).  Organization has nurse practitioner residency program.  Some specialties are offered within the organization - dental, podiatry, chiropractic, e consultations offered for derm / cardiology / endocrinology ect(nice for patients).  Providers are expected to double book appts regulary, length is typically 15 - 20 minutes appointments.  Some providers are not budgeted for MA support and thus have to work independently without ancillary support.    Patient base is heavy, with low income, non-english speakers, uninsured, often poor health literacy, demanding. Can be satisfying if this is what you are looking for.

 Orgainzation frequently  has mandatory meetings during lunch time.  Health insurance is a high deductable nightmare, with tedious barriers thrown in for emplyees to complete in order for the organization to help pay for portion of the deductable (not good if you have a family with health needs many employees use spouces health insurance).

Overall organization has a nice facade,  has a nice mission, but can't say I will be retiring from them!

There’s a lot of corporate energy in a non-profit setting. You want to believe in the mission & the work but it gets difficult when you’re stressed from being overworked & micromanaged. Managers are coddled by senior management; when you point out downfalls within management, HRBP will just cover & gaslight. Manager(s) will knowingly pit co-workers against each other, very cliquey. CHC puts out there that they care for their employees in all aspects but will then use confided information against them. Manager(s) will also impose tasks with no guidance or clarification. Inquisition is not tolerated; questioning why things are done a certain way is answered with “that’s just how we’ve always done it” even if it’s outdated/inefficient. Leadership pays fair wages to who they want; Manager(s) will hold promotions over your head for more productivity with no intention of promoting. Promotions are given based on likability, not work quality/efficiency/growth. Low merit increases, low HPSA score. 

•	Answer, transfer and record telephone communications from patients to providers accurately, and provide follow up as needed   to pharmacies, etc. via ECW (eClinicalWorks) patient management system
•	Check in, discharge from, cancel and reschedule patient appointments, ensuring that all demographics and HIPAA documentation is accurate, up-to-date and electronically filed utilizing and Centricity and ECW patient management systems
•	Process insurance verification, record financial information and process charges and payments to accounts
•	Utilize internal messaging system (Lync) to expedite patient experience and ensure follow-through from start to finish
•	Daily office functions: faxing, scanning, emailing, data entry, telephone messaging, credit card processing and reconciling end of 
     day with financial office, and other duties as assigned
•	Daily dental office functions: tracking insurance eligibility/authorizations for basic/major procedures, maintain xray database, coordinate with dental lab to facilitate process and delivery of dental apparatuses

This place is like a revolving door. The environment is toxic. It’s about who you know whether they are on your side or not .I had a doctor’s note allowing me to work from home when my supervisor sent me an email to tell me there was an office that needed to be cleaned and I was needed at the office to do so. ( not a custodian position). Meanwhile another employee is given special consideration because of the protection of a former employee who is friend with one of the big boss. That particular employee had never stepped feet in the office and the reason for that was because they  wanted to be close to family members. 
My former supervisor got fired and my department was being micromanaged by an outside person who is a former employee who left the company. Total mess….
My supervisor one time told me that it was INAPPROPRIATE  for me to have the nicest office out of the team when I was there only because no one cared to set up an area for me when I started so I found myself somewhere to work. 
No structure, disorganized. 

While working at the Community Health Center I learned so much about patient care, treatment and preventative care. CHC is a very fast-paced, high patient volume. This non-profit organization has many doctors working everyday. On any given day there was at least three pediatricians, 4 family providers and 5 Internist, all which saw a high volume of patients daily. Although, each provider has their own Medical Assistant there was always was a couple providers that shared MA. Aside of the regular scheduled providers the clinic has a podiatrist, nutritionist, BH, HIV clinic, methadone clinic all which shared any available MA. This made it even busier, and we always had more than just our own provider to assist. As an MA you also took care of any referrals, etc. It was a non-stop day, with a very high patient flow. I actually loved working here, for I meet so many wonderful people and learned so much. Unfortunately, I did have a better offer at UCONN Health Center that I just could not deny.

A typical day is rarely typical as patients change daily especially when there are walk-in/same day services available. In addition, working with children or those with language or education barriers is often unpredictable . I learned to take time to ensure patients actually understand what the plan of care is and why it's relevant, so patients are engaged in their health goals. If people feel heard and sense that they matter, it is easier to explain both the "what and why" of their care plan by finding practical ways of applying the information. Management recognizes that nurses often are self-motivated and team-oriented, thus able to function both together as well as autonomously. The hardest part of the job is realizing you cannot help others more than they're willing to help themselves. But, if you can help inspire someone to commit to their own health, you can witness the most amazing transformations!

very interesting, everyday was a learning and teaching experience. co-workers were fun, we all worked as a team in providing high quality healthcare to the patients and community. productive fun work place, we had all the tools and equipments to perform our job to our fullest. one hour lunch break, one could not ask for more. providers were to approach  their vision to be a leading healthcare providers in the state of Connecticut, building a world-class system committed to caring for the uninsured and underserved populations. CHC is focused on improving health outcomes for its patients as well as building healthy communities. CHC delivers services in locations statewide,offering primary care in medical, dental and behavioral health services

The workday is very busy and at some points you can get relocated into buildings you may not be so familiar with so at times it can feel like you are brand new , even after years of working here. Staff is great and most are easy to approach when needing answers n certain protocol issues such as where items are located and what to do with certain documentation within patient charts. I enjoy being able to interact with different people of all different ages from birth to geriatrics i love seeing people after they return from an illness, or or children just seeing them progress and grow is wonderful .

Was weird when I got there on my 1st day no one there even acknowledged me I had to ask the recruiter who it was I was supposed to meet with. Don't bother putting in any effort considering results are team based and you can literally do nothing but as long as one person is doing everything it doesn't matter. Clear favoritism going on and people were always leaving 3 hours early while management asked me to cover for them simply because they had children and I didn't. Funny because management is pretty much never around and just delegates whoever to be in charge and takes their word for whatever happens even when they're powertripping
