It's important to know what you're going into before starting at CHS in Customer Service. This isn't an easy department or an easy job.

The pay is great and the people you work with are great for the most part. It's a work at home job and you don't deal with a commute.

The interview will sell the job as you helping patients, fixing account issues, and helping make sure insurance is correctly billed. 

What they don't tell you is that this is actually a debt collection position. You'll be expected to collect tens of thousands of dollars from cold calling patients each month. This is in addition to and at the same time as you're told to do inbound calls. It isn't listed in the job description. When they mention 'some' outbound in the interview they mean 'all the time'.

On those outbound calls the patient is not happy to hear from you. You're cold calling them to tell them they owe money to a hospital. These calls turn into a mess because the patient thinks you're a scammer trying to steal from them or outright curse you for calling them.

There's a lot of turnover. Once you accept the position you can't go to any other department for at least six months. That's the catch, they lock you in and force you to either quit or do debt collecting for them for awhile. You're not given any choice after this is sprung on you.

The stressors will be angry patients who're not happy you've called them, no followup from the management team, and not enough Spanish reps to handle Spanish calls. There's micromanagement from some of the supervisor and it's hard to get someone to take a call if there's an escalation. 

If calls are holding despite them dumping outbound calls on you, management will flood the group chat with messages telling people to hurry up and answer the waiting calls before the patients who actually want to talk to you hang up. There's not really any middle ground. They are either upset people are hanging up or they are upset not enough outbound is happening.

The pluses are that your teammates will be very supportive and try to help you, as long as you watch who you trust.

Most of us weren't told about the debt collecting, so if you don't want to do debt collecting, apply for a different role like insurance biller before you get stuck for six months.

You'll get decent insurance and decent amounts of PTO. The sick policy isn't great and it takes a year if you miss one day for it to go off your record. This is pretty old fashioned when most companies forgive after 90 days.

They will not work around childcare or allow flexibility if you need to pick your children up or there is an an emergency

If the system goes down, and it does a lot, you don't get paid for that time.

They want you to be ready to go at your shift start, so the managers will tell you to start logging in and pulling up your work systems before your shift even though that's unpaid time. 

You'll be monitored and expected to provide pictures to prove every day that you haven't tampered with your credit card reader.

That's about an hour each week you don't get paid for, but the plus is at least you aren't driving to work. It's not without good points, sometimes you can help a struggling young mother set up a payment plan or help someone get a reduced bill.

If you can handle being a debt collector you'll be fine here. If not you need to think about other departments before you start.

I don't mean this in a bad way. No company is perfect and no company has all wonderful bosses and happy employees, it's just not a realistic expectation. I find it amusing that all the negative reviews of the company on this site, regardless of how short and uninformative, have lots of "Yes - this was helpful" marks, but none of the positive, more informative reviews have those. It just goes to show that, by and large, people who are taking the time to go find places to review their company are more often there to make sure others know how terrible their experience was.

I, on the other hand, have not seen this. I have an excellent boss, his boss is great as well and I'm generally very happy with our upper leadership. I've never been denied a single day of vacation, Dr appt, or anything in over two years. I am well compensated, there is ample room and opportunity for growth as long as you are a positive and successful contributor, as it should be. I feel more or equally secure in my position here at CHS compared to any other company I've worked for.

To be fair, I am aware of some contractors being let go, but full time employees do not get laid off here. You can get fired, just like any other company, but they do not lay off. In fact, one of the negatives, in my opinion, is that they keep people sometimes that are full time when they really should get rid of them. Contractors, and I have been one in a previous life, have to live with the fact that they may be let go on a moments notice for little or no reason. It's an unfortunate but well known aspect of being a contractor. If you don't appreciate that reality, you should find a new one. And yes, the company leadership is worried about the bottom line, they're leading a public company, it's a pretty basic requirement, and I have no issue with the balance they have here.

I am, overall, very happy with my time at CHS. They're not a perfect company with perfect people, and if that's what you are looking for, I wish you luck in the workplace finding that. The culture at the corporate office is generally very positive, and I have spoken with very few people who are unhappy in their position or with the company. My interview was professional as expected and I have been treated very well with very few exceptions.

• Supports various modules of Cerner Millennium Suite including PowerChart, FirstNet, PathNet, etc. during several major implementations in Q3/Q4 2013
• Coordinates support tiers with Business Partners to ensure a smooth deployment while transitioning from HMS and McKesson
• Supports Connex and Mirth HL7 Interface Engines to ensure patient and financial information was communicating correctly
• Uses Remedy reporting to locate and verify trends and schedule training session accordingly with Cerner Engagement Leaders
• Coordinates with Cerner AMS and Cerner First Response Team for immediate end user support
• Daily communication with Cerner and Citrix Engineering teams to ensure 100% uptime
• Weekly communication with hospital IT Directors and Project Leaders for network “health checks” and review any outstanding tickets that had been escalated the previous week

For the first three and half years worked as a mailclerk and took in insurance payments and patient payments.  A typical day would start with the mail being sortedand opened.  It would then be deposited by rote on computer.  This was an all day job.   Then the company decided to outsource our mail up north.  So at that time the job was divided and I was made Receptionist/Assistant to the HR Manager and still did the Patient Payments.  So basically I had two full time jobs by then and with a new HR Manager added I also had two people I was answering to.  I was also in charge of the supply closet for 200 people so I stayed busy.  Until this change I had been working twelve hour days for three and half years and this brought me to eight hour days which was a very good change.

The hardest part I suppose was in working for two managers as each of them wanted me to be only theirs.  I really didn't work for the new one but she treated me like I was her personal assistant which took time away from getting my money deposited on time and caused problems.  I learned it is difficult to work for two people, especially two women.  :-)

The most enjoyable part of my job was working for my boss with new applicants and getting supplies for everyone.  I loved helping people and I did enjoy helping to save money for the company.  I really did like my job at CHS.

It was a great place to work with great supervisors.  Unfortunately I don't think there was much job security there.  I guess for Managers maybe so but for regular employees not so much with respect and dignity.   Didn't take more than one mistake to get rid of an excellent employee.  I saw it more than once.  Even if you got great performance evaluations.  So if you want long term job situation CHS might not be the place for you.

During the initial interview you are informed you will be well trained, that there are plenty of advancement opportunities, and how the management has an open door policy.  These statements are not true.  Within the first two weeks, you quickly learn what it's really like. Training is sporadic, procedures are constantly changed, there are very few advancement opportunities. 

Management changed 5 times and I witnessed more than 14 coworkers come and go, within a 2 year period.  Coworkers are 'clicky' and backstabbing.  The DTA rule fully applies (Don't Trust Anyone).  The hardest part of the job is keeping up with the inconsistencies of policies and procedures.  No two employees receive the same treatment, and you are overloaded with responsibility to the point you cannot do your job efficiently.  If you ask for assistance you are interrogated, and you will be babysat.

Workers to be overloaded, stressed by major micro-management, and harassed until resigning or terminated with illegitimate reasoning.  Salary increases are obsolete, healthcare premiums are unreasonable, and promotions are rare.  Privacy policies of patients are ignored and nursing aids receive gifts from patients and patient families, which is not permitted according to policy.  

Several employees had issues with receiving their healthcare benefits and identification cards.  Payroll does not calculate the correct taxes to be deducted.  For a large company overall, with an impressive website, this office consists of less than 30 employees and is poorly ran.  I would not recommend this company for anyone interested in looking forward to going to work on a daily basis.  This offices atmosphere caused severe depression and anxiety issues for several employees.

When I first got hired, everything seemed laid back with a steady call volume but still allowed down time between calls. The longer I was there, the higher the call volume got with no down time between calls. You're expected to basically be a robot  stuck at your desk answering back to back calls your whole shift. You're only allowed to miss 5 calls per month and your off que time is monitored like you're a prisoner. Pay is very low considering you may average between 90-100 calls per day. Two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch break is not enough time to relax before you're back on the phone. They use a point system and if you miss work for any type of sickness including Covid, you will receive a point even with a doctor's excuse.  They only allow so many employees off per day and even if you request a day off for a doctor's appointment months in advance, if the day you need is full you will receive a point for taking off. It's very difficult to use PTO because only 3 employees are allowed off per day and the days fill up quickly. If you don't have PTO time, you are not allowed to request time off even if the days on the calendar are available. High employee turnover rate because of unrealistic metric requirements and low pay. This was my first wfh job and I would not recommend this job to anyone. Training was 1 week and 3-4 days before you train with a Pal for 2-3 days then you're on your own. You can reach out to supervisors for help and some answer quickly and some ignore you and never reply back. Everything is closely monitored and recorded. They always talked about keeping off que times to a bare minimum and keeping call times very low. Apply for this job only if you are a Robot

The company has perks that entice you to the job. However, the workload is astounding since they acquired 70 more hospitals in early 2014. Now you have unrealistic expectations by management, emails threatening disciplinary action, and a workload that can't be managed effectively due to the high turnover. Due to management priorities, enrollment of providers is at the bottom of the list! This sets the whole team up for failure since this creates problems with offices, providers, patients, and the billing Dept. There are so many priorities, that you could never meet all expectations. We have management with no experience in enrollment who are ruining the workflow, morale, and the whole process of enrollment with their overwhelming lack of knowledge on daily operations of a successful enrollment team. No one will stand up on your behalf even when they know how overloaded you are and what a great job you are doing to juggle so many tasks. There is an obvious "Every man for themselves" mentality. The department has had 3 Directors in 4 years, each worse than the last. There has been so much turnover in this dept, that supervisors can hardly be reached since most of their job is spent doing interviews. The new people are learning quickly that no one has time for their questions, the team leads are rude and lack knowledge needed to train, and other employees are unhappy. They are leaving before 90 days in most cases now. HR has had several round table discussions to figure out how to prevent the turnover but the problems noted are not adressed.

High turnover, there are only a handful of provider enrollment specialist who have seniority and even they are looking for other jobs. New director who came from billing knows nothing about enrollment constantly giving new priorities and you can't even finish the first one! There is no room for advancement he hires supervisors who doesn't know squat on how to complete an application they are useless. One left and went to another department then came back and then left again, one didn't even last 24hrs and the last one didn't even last but 3 months! What?? They are paying new people 18 and up because they realize that the amount of work that is required, anything less than that ain't going to cut it. But yet the ones who are currently there make less and probably have more experience oh not to mention the little 2% raises every year sometimes less! If you do work there kiss managements behind that way when your ready to bounce they will accept your two weeks notice otherwise if they don't like you, the moment you turn in your notice, they baracade you in your cubicle while you pack and walk you straight out the door! You come home with headaches and anxiety and you think about the work you didn't get done because of the psycho director wanting his records cleaned up just so HE can look good to superiors. Management is all fake, HR is too. Don't apply! Fair warning!

Everyone there worked in fear, benefits offered were great, but demand was extreme.

During interview, the manager who was interviewing me walked out twice to take a personal call. They tried to bombard me with technical data about the job that you couldnt learn unless youve worked in that nitch industry. I asked questions and showed them I knew similar systems, but they talked about people they wish they could hire, and the hiring manager even told me he would probably be gone within the year due to stress and I would replace him.

They stressed a very low key environment, not attracting attention, as if it was cloak dagger stuff they were doing.

They told me it was an informal interview once I got there, both were wearing jeans and polos, and told me they were assesing the candidates based on there knowledge and whether who they THINK will be the most responsible and who they THINK they will get along with. Not based off of credentials, drive, or education. Then that person would go onto the "Formal Interview" with there boss.

Considering they bothed walked out multiple times while i was trying to obtain information, got upset because i didnt ask enough technical questions based off systems i didnt know, and told me they were hiring based off what they thought of candidates instead of education and credentials, I would highly not recommend this company.

Supportive, family-like team environment, friendly and flexible management. Enjoying working with great colleagues and having fun with the team while still getting work done.

Staff often feel overworked and expected to take on more responsibilities due to chronic short staffing and a lack of resources, without increased compensation or acknowledgment.


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Beloit Area Community Health center the company culture has really improved over the last year with new leadership and the focus on servant leadership throughout the organization. The integration of the employee experience committee makes the workplace fun!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I fulfilled management over patient registration, as well as overseeing a staff of four individuals. Throughout the day I completed various administrative duties as well, including managing delinquent accounts, contacting debtors via phone/mail to arrange payments, negotiating payment plans, resolving billing disputes, and meticulously documenting all collection efforts while ensuring legal compliance
