Community LIFE

Community LIFE (CL) has been my place of employment for nearly 10 years.  My experience has provided opportunity for professional and personal growth in a supportive environment.  Initially hired as an activity assistant, I was blessed to gain promotion to full time Music Therapist, completed a Master's Degree (partially funded by CL), and collaborated on developing an internship program for music therapy students.  Being part of a passionate and creative team that is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of our growing older adult population is both rewarding and an inspiration.  One of the more challenging aspects of the job is managing a large caseload (75+), and adjusting to the ongoing change that company growth necessitates.  The most enjoyable part is building relationships with the participants, collaborating with other team members and students, and witnessing a participant (re)connect with themselves and others through the power of music and other activities / services.  Overall, a fantastic place to work and be!

When I saw Community Life was hiring I jumped at the chance to work for them. I knew they did good things for the community and I wanted to be a part of those good things. At first everything seemed to be going well. Then COVID happened and things quickly took a bad turn. We began to lose staff and our work load as nurses started to get bigger. Our work load changed so much that the company had to change our responsibilities on the website because people would interview for the job and quickly turn it down when they saw how much work we were doing. Our pay was never increased but our work load kept growing. We as nurses worked our butts off and often took work home and we would still get emails and text messages about things that needed to be done. Management which constantly made you feel like they thought of you as “heroes” often harassed you with texts and emails and expected you to work tirelessly without any incentive. PPE is a joke, when they do provide you a mask it’s supposed to last a whole week.  When you bring up concerns to the upper management they tell you that you’re lucky to work for the company and that you’re “bound to get exposed to covid eventually” any ways. The pay isn’t worth the amount of work you have to do and the level of disrespect you take as a nurse from people who are above you. Save yourself the trouble and apply for a different Life company. 

Go anywhere else but here!!! They have no idea what they are doing when it comes to home care and it is the aides and participants that suffer. I have over 30 years In this field and I have never worked at a place with such disrespectful management. They promise you a set schedule but you end up driving to other center to care for their participants or you are forced to use you PTO to make up hours if they don’t have enough care to give you 40 hours. If you want to run your car into the ground, be constantly stressed, and underpaid work here but there are so many other companies out there hiring for home health aides  that will treat you with dignity and respect rather than being treated like the low man on the totem pole even though they couldn’t run their program without aides. Management lies, paychecks are wrong when you bring it up you are screamed at and they just blame someone else. Save yourself the aggravation and don’t even apply. 

In the beginning, you will feel you found a really cool place to work but soon you learn that management is out for themselves and you really have no value to them.  Huge turnover in the marketing/intake department for this reason.  Forced to continue working in the community under the guise of "essential worker" during Covid, but it's not essential just to get more clients to keep making money for the company at the expense of your own health.  Employee was also told to continue coming to work when their spouse was home sick with Covid.  Supervisor also came to work with Covid.  Employees are not important to them, just the bottom line for the supervisors who receive their bonuses on their employees' work.  I would avoid this place at all costs.

I am proud to be working for Community LIFE.   They have extremely caring staff that go above and beyond on a regular basis.  I wish I would have known about Community LIFE when my parents were still present.  Their program could have changed their lives for the better and given them quality of life, which they had struggled with for the amount of help they required.  You don't hear too much about the program, but I assure you that it is an excellent program with professional staff.  Management does everything they can for their staff to ensure their safety and well-being.  It is a great place to work, and the staff become like a family to you. 

Rewarding job.  Every position in the company has the opportunity to be a positive influence in the participant's lives.  The staff goes above and beyond to assist program participants in their efforts to remain living independently in their home.  Compassionate staff and good teamwork.  Each day brings new challenges.
The impact staff has on participants helps individuals who no longer have the ability to care for themselves.  It is rewarding hearing their stories and making a difference by just caring.  Frequent policy changes, but they are shared with employees.  If you enjoy working with people and making a difference with your efforts, Community LIFE is the place to work.  Compassionate individuals are needed.

Management is horrible, they have unrealistic expectations in the monroeville office. They gossip, share personal information. They hate for people to leave the marketing department for other positions. They want you to stay complacent. The turnover rate in the marketing/intake/medicaid department in the monroeville office is humorous. They CANNOT keep anyone in that department. The CEO knows there is a problem but perhaps he is to afraid to cut the cancer out of the office. The pay was good, the actual center staff was great. However the corporate office in monroeville is a horrible work environment. Again pay and benefits are decent. Healthcare for more than yourself is priced ridiculous. If you're willing to sacrifice your sanity for a job, go for it.

Community LIFE offers a work environment that allows staff to work autonomously and as part of a team. We have a lot of long-time employees that are always eager to help the newer employees learn and grow.  The care and impact our staff have on the Senior Citizens that we serve is beautiful to witness and be a part of.  As with many companies, change and transition occurs, however at Community LIFE solid communication helps to navigate the ever-changing health care environment. I strongly recommend Community LIFE as an employer. 

No two days are alike, my first Supervisor was fantastic but upper management is horrible and not to be trusted; elders are treated well but employees are not -- this company is a wolf in sheep's clothing.  People are fired routinely.  Rather than working on issues and addressing problems, people are fired, from all levels of the agency.  Morale is low because no one knows who is going to get the axe next.  On the other hand, a more enjoyable part of the job is interacting with the elders and activities does a wonderful job of hosting large events for this to happen, such as carnivals, proms, petting zoos, etc.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Actually Nothing! Except the pay check. Unprofessional, rude employees. Very low level. Toxic environment 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Rudeness, unprofessionalism, unskilled managers, wrong individuals in the wrong position. HR very unskilled to handle all those issues 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic work environment. Expect to deal with rude people who even don’t say good morning in the morning. Very low education level.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressed, no communication, always sick to deal with unskilled rude management
