On Monday I begin by going over my To Do list and setting priorities.  I review the progress of existing educational activties, check voice mail, then check the calendar to refresh my memory on the upcoming week. I then like to meet with my staff early, mid and late week to discuss priorities, check progress, and then prepare for the week. I want to make sure, as much as possible, that we can all dedicate time to our tasks to move educational activities and projects forward.  Focusing on organization and priorities first thing every morning contributes to successful mangement.

What I have learned to be a successful manager are the following: 
Talk regularly to my employees; trust my employees; judge people myself, not by what others say; make and follow through on decisions. People respect leaders for doing something rather not following through; realize that management qualifications does not necessarily make you a better manager, its the hands on experiences and how these experiences are managed; most importantly, never be afraid to say 'I don't know' and then say 'I will get an answer for you' and committ to it.

The best part about my job is having a genuine care and concern for the people I work with. Having this kind of relationship is priceless. It creates a much better environment, one that is more condusive to to a positive atmosphere where people are willing to roll up their sleeves and accomplish great things as a team. When people are made to feel significant they are more willing to take risk. However, I am aware I cannot go beyond professional boundaries, just a real genuine care and concern for your people and their wellfare. There is nothing in particular that I find overly difficult in what I do as a manager.  Being dedicated and proactive as a manager contributes to managing situations and conflicts effectively.

A typical day at work involves supporting pediatric patients through structured therapeutic routines, managing behavioral interventions, documenting observations, and working closely with interdisciplinary teams. As a lead, I also guide other BHTs—delegating tasks, mentoring newer staff, and ensuring safety protocols are followed throughout the unit. The day is fast-paced, filled with both challenges and rewarding moments of connection.

What I’ve learned is how critical clear communication, empathy, and consistency are when working with children in crisis. I’ve also sharpened my leadership and coordination skills, especially under pressure. Every day teaches me more about the resilience of kids and the power of teamwork in healthcare.

Management at Connecticut Children’s is highly collaborative. Supervisors are approachable and open to feedback, and they genuinely prioritize both patient outcomes and staff well-being. While no system is perfect, I’ve appreciated the transparency and structure that support clinical operations.

The workplace culture is driven by compassion, inclusivity, and a commitment to evidence-based care. Even during high-stress situations, colleagues lift one another up. There’s a shared sense of purpose that’s deeply motivating.

The hardest part of the job is witnessing the emotional pain some children face and feeling limited in what you can do within the scope of your role. Some days are emotionally draining, especially when young patients struggle to make progress.

The most enjoyable part is seeing small victories—when a child communicates more effectively, builds trust, or simply laughs for the first time in days. Those moments remind you why you’re there. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of their healing journey.

The only positive is being able to help patients and their families. Most team members are great to work with and there are some fantastic humans- management - not so much, especially executives. 

This employer is not disability friendly and the work place is not accessible. Should you need accommodations, management will push you out and display discrimination. There are some in particular who have complained about employees utilizing protected sick time and leave under federal and state law and the ADA. If they think this of their employees, how do you think they think of patients with complex medical needs? The dollar comes first here. Patients who want to work here with chronic health conditions beware, they don’t truly care. 

They say to promote DEI and an inclusive workplace but their policies and how they actually treat employees says otherwise. 

Parking is another issue with disorganization-  parking offsite with many being late to shifts due to shuttles- YOU will be penalized for being late. Some days the shuttle takes 1 hour to get from the hospital to the garage which is one mile away. 

Pay is very low here and this company is in a budget deficit so there were no holiday bonuses this past year and many requests for raises are denied. Very under market compensation -certain roles $10 less an hour than other organizations. There is not room for growth or moving on the ladder at this organization. High turnover and low staffing. 

Working with children from all sorts of backgrounds and dealing with all sorts of issues was always great.

Executive Management Team has really come a long way and seems to be keeping the hospital on the right track for success.

Unfortunately directors and managers from specific departments have been nothing short of irrelevant, incompetent and useless. There is a system of do as I say not as I do that has been established. Leadership at this level does not understand the idea of lead by example and utilize the hospital's "200% Accountability" policy only as a means to keep staff in check but not as something they have to abide by.

The hospital has recently seen a huge turnover rate for some departments. With this comes the question of why they are losing so many staff. Easy answer is lack of actual leadership and a serious lack of understanding and care for issues that staff have voiced. Unfortunately this is ignored constantly and replaced with nonsense excuses.

Overall working with a majority of the patients, staff and departments has been an excellent experience! There are a lot of talented individuals who work for this organization that have excellent potential.

CT Children's is where I have held a number of nursing roles over my career.  As a passionate pediatric nurse I was able to realize an exceptional level of knowledge, expertise and excellent patient care.
I have taught, mentored and grown a great number of newly graduated and newly hired nurses, especially in the critical care areas.  
As in any institution, there are individuals who enhance your work environment and there are those who have a negative impact.  I have observed both not only personally but with other members of the hospital team.  
It speaks to the integrity of the overall culture of patient safety and patient/family experience that I have remained employed at CT Children's for  since its inception in 1996.

The most enjoyable part of my job is going to work every day and be successful. And also when I met my deadline on time with the processing of claims.

My job as Security Supervisor with Connecticut Childrens is very rewarding . I have a group of awsome security staff who make my job easy. I make sure payroll is done, schedule staff , Give direction as well as monitor cameras. I also make routine building tours and address any issues that may arise. This job has a great culture for children who need medical help. All staff give there all to helping familys at any cost. The hard part of this job is, seeing kids who you have grown to love not able to see another day due to a illness that has taken there life. It makes you appreciate life for what it is worth. But the getting to know these kids, and the familys is worth all the effort that you but into your job. I love my job and enjoy working with this Hospital to save childrens lives.

I really enjoyed working at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. I worked very close to management and the organization's CEO & CFO for many years. I was able to gain a large amount of experience and growth towards new programs created to help new and current employee's, as well as patient families. The culture is growing and positive for patient families as well as the work place environment. The most difficult part of the job was leaving positions in which I exceled in, but this was also a benefit to the teams vision. One of the most enjoyable pleasures of being a team member at Connecticut Children's Medical Center was working directly with families and patients to resolve their concerns and problems on  many different levels. I would love this opportunity to extend my growth in the organization.

I check family and friends into visit patients. the hardest part is when the family members are upset and don't want to follow hospital policies. Co-workers are easy to work with and supervisors are fair. The employees are very diverse and you can always learn from the people you come in contact with at 
CCMC. I really enjoy getting to know the families and when the children are released seeing the smiles on everyone's faces just bring so much joy. I have learned so much about different cultures, religions and how important it is to take the time to learn about different cultures, because inside these talkes to start to understand why people do what they do. Sometimes it is their religion, culture or even just their life as it was delt to them. 

The typical workday involved lots of very intense patient care. You won't last long here if you're a slacker. The management has very high standards and expects your best every day. That wasn't the part which bothered me though. Some of the management here wasn't very sensitive or professional. Others were professional but it was kind of a mixed bag of good management as well as bad. The best part of working here was obviously that it's purpose driven work which is very meaningful. Plus the benefits were pretty good. One area of improvement though is more training for management. Some of them aren't very professional and fail to bring out their employees' best potential.
