Comparion Insurance Agency

I joined Liberty Mutual not Comparion Insurance Agency.  I suppose signing the legal paperwork to keep my job,  said I agree to join Comparion Insurance.  We wanted our jobs so we signed it.  Since the announcement of the company change, very large producers as well as very respected, long term managers have just gotten up and quit before the change, during, and still currently.  The expectations of Comparion are unrealistic goals, that most can not meet in an unstable environment due to the pandemic, carrier restrictions, and extremely high rates.  Comparion has taken a lot away from agents that helped us boost sales, without replacing it, leads for example.  It’s a balance of desk time, marketing time, getting in the number of phone calls in they want you to make, the number of quotes they are expecting.  You can’t get referrals if you’re sitting at a desk all day, you can’t make the calls if you’re out of the office, and the number of quotes will decline as a result.  The state of the economy combined with a brand that isn't recognizable or transparent with the direction they are going in, are making the job that much harder.  As a result agents have made a lot less money than we did in the past.  These conditions have made it harder to sell than ever.  Zero acknowledgement, no inflation compensation, no goal reductions, or base salary increases have been made.  Making less money = difficulty paying bills.   There has been a substantial amount of turnover.   The culture of Liberty Mutual was awesome.  The management in Texas from the very top down is not supportive, degrades your work behind your back, without knowing you, degrades you as a person, and not concerned with keeping the talent they have, not encouraging, doesn’t listen, just talks, and will tell you, you’re just lucky to have a job.  They have ruined that culture.  Have you ever heard the term, quiet fire?  That’s when you’re forced to quit.  You’re talked down to in a passive aggressive manor, not supported, not developed, not guided, or coached, left out, and ignored.  You’re scratching your head knowing there is plotting going on behind your back so you eventually you feel so defeated you just quit.  You quitting was a result of the quiet fire approach.  This is the environment you will be working in here.  I saw someone say flexibility hours, and unlimited uncapped commissions, easily a $100k job.  I can tell you, the flexible hours comment is true.  But, if you’re not working all hours, including weekends to build a book for 3-4 years, you will not make $100k.  In my opinion, this job is set up for someone that lives at home with their parents still, who can afford to be poor for a while.  Not grown adults with families who are paying the mortgage.  Forget about growth from within also.  They will tell you that during the interview process, and will promote the heck out of that on social media but it’s not true.  They very rarely promote out of a sales position.  If you still want to go for it after you read this, don’t say you haven’t been warned. It’s difficult to point to just one thing that makes this company exceptional. The uncapped compensation structure allows my effort and performance to directly influence my earning potential. The benefits package is outstanding, and the culture consistently supports a truly diverse and inclusive work environment. Over time, many of my colleagues have become like family, and I genuinely look forward to coming to work each day. The combination of opportunity, support, and camaraderie makes this an incredibly rewarding place to build a career.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most challenging aspect of this role is that my success is directly tied to my own performance. When I face obstacles, it takes a great deal of grit and mental resilience to recognize that I’m ultimately responsible for both the pressure I feel and the areas where I fall short. This accountability is part of what makes the role unique and rewarding. Even during the toughest moments, I know I have strong leadership and peer support to help me navigate challenges and stay on track.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture here is incredibly supportive. I don’t have to spend out‑of‑pocket to grow my book of business or lease office space, and my direct leader, his peers, and my team consistently provide strong guidance and encouragement. It’s definitely a competitive environment, but since we’re really competing against ourselves (outside of formal contests), we all genuinely root for each other. That combination of support and healthy competition makes it a great place to grow and succeed.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day starts with catching up on client messages and following up with referral partners. From there, I move into the core activities that drive my business—prospecting new clients, building relationships with additional referral partners, or visiting my existing partners at their offices. Because we collaborate with nearly every industry vertical, there’s a lot of room for creativity in how I structure my day, as long as it contributes to growing my book of business. This flexibility keeps the role dynamic and engaging.  Outside of partnering and prospecting, it's meeting with and proposing insurance solutions to clients.

What is the best part of working at the company?
One of the things that stands out most is how seriously our agency takes compensation. Leadership consistently reviews pay structures to ensure fairness and transparency, which is something I deeply appreciate. On top of that, our recognition programs are some of the best I’ve seen, people’s hard work is noticed and celebrated often.

Work‑life balance is also a major strength here. The flexibility offered has allowed me to manage my career and personal life without feeling stretched too thin. The benefits are fantastic, and there are countless development opportunities available for anyone looking to advance their skill set or explore new paths within the organization.

After 16 years, I still feel grateful to work for a company that genuinely cares about my well‑being. I’ve been able to learn, grow, and evolve as a professional in ways I never imagined, and that’s entirely because of the supportive, employee‑focused culture at Comparion and Liberty Mutual.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Still in Its Early Stages as an Agency: Because the agency is still in its infancy, there are inevitable learning curves and some evolving processes. While this can feel challenging at times, it also creates an exciting environment where employees can influence positive change and help shape the agency’s long‑term identity.

here’s a genuine sense of collaboration, support, and shared purpose that you feel every day. Leadership is approachable and truly listens, teams celebrate each other’s wins, and there’s a real commitment to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Even with all the growth and change, the culture remains rooted in respect, integrity, and doing what’s right for both employees and customers. It’s the kind of culture that makes you proud to show up and give your best.

Comparion was born from the Liberty Mutual captive sales force. They resisted and continue a true brokerage model, where compensation aligns with the effort to maintain a quality book of business. 

To top this off, the management team lacked an understanding of marketing trends, primarily due to their age and last selling experience during the pre-internet era. This meant you were locked in to largely antiquated and robotic ways of accomplishing your goals. It was the classic case of an organization claiming they are working smarter, but in fact working far harder than necessary. 

This leaves me with the ultimate reason you would not want to work with Comparion, they want to make their employees, not contractors but W-2 employees, pay for their own marketing efforts. A book you don’t own, aren’t paid much for renewal and can’t market effectively with corporate communication restrictions from parent company Liberty Mutual. The book and carrier access is now extremely limited. Turnover in both employees and customers is high and building a growing book that can be rewarded is nearly impossible. You are expected to ignore current customers for new business generation, similar to Comcast and the rates always go up too. 

Anyone can write the carriers Comparion offers and if you were to start an agency, you could write the same ones without all of the restrictions and poor management. It’s simply put: A poor business model, built on the backs of employees who are underpaid for the work and forced to spend their own money to generate sales activity.  Not a place to build a career, or book of business. Restrictive contracts and lacking the foresight to stay ahead of trends in the marketplace. Not a full service agency, use at your own risk. 

I’ve had a really positive experience working at Comparion Insurance Agency. The culture is performance-driven but genuinely supportive, which creates an environment where you’re motivated to grow without feeling like you’re on your own.

One thing that really stands out in this industry—when you’re licensed and performing well, you’ll get recruited constantly. I’ve had multiple outreach messages daily and have taken the time to interview with several local agencies to understand what else is out there. After doing that due diligence, I can confidently say I haven’t found another organization that matches the culture, support, and overall opportunity that Comparion offers.

Recognition is a big part of that. The company consistently rewards hard work through incentive programs and recognition trips that are well-earned and thoughtfully executed. 

These trips have been a highlight for me—not just as a reward, but as a chance to connect with other high performers and be part of a team that truly celebrates success.

There’s also a strong emphasis on professional development. From training to mentorship to collaboration, I’ve been able to continuously grow my skillset and build a long-term career—not just hit short-term goals.

Like any sales role, success here requires discipline, consistency, and self-motivation. But if you’re driven and want a career where your effort directly impacts your income, growth, and recognition, this is a place where you can thrive.

Overall, I’d highly recommend Comparion to anyone looking for a supportive, high-performance culture with real opportunities for advancement and recognition.

Liberty Mutual was a great place to work, and well compensated with the competitive rates provided. Then “we” switched to Comparion. We lost all credibility (which was the main reason I had applied), rates increase every single week, along with carrier restrictions that we cannot avoid. Even if you manage to find a good rate, there’s pre-bind verification that no other company has to deal with, and they take a MINIMUM of 7 business days to reconcile. Then, even if they’re approved, they (most likely) have a rate increase from what you had originally quoted at. Basically, there is NO way to work with dealerships, which are the easiest and most compensating lead source. You are also expected (at least need to if you want to maintain credibility with clients) to service any and all requests made by clients while simultaneously garnering new lead sources, making phone calls, selling life insurance (horrifying rates as well and the most important part of the job), working at the office (definitely not hybrid lately), networking events, and more. It’s very intense to say the last, but mainly, as the company strips you of your ability to sell (with rate increases)carrier restrictions) they also increase your quota, and reprimand you for not hitting it. Currently, we are in the midst of what is assumed to be a quiet firing. They have created a VERY hostile work environment in which it is very nerve wracking to work with. They have advocated employees to quit just to avoid firing them (which we assume is because they cannot afford to employ us). Liberty Mutual used to be a great place to work, but has since become a leeway station to find another job

Overall Experience:
I’ve been with the company for 25 years, and the recent transformational change has been one of the biggest I’ve experienced. Standing up the largest independent agency was a massive effort, and shifting from a long‑time captive model challenged all of us to think differently. It wasn’t always smooth, and I know the changes didn’t work for everyone, but through it all the culture remained strong and focused on doing what’s right.
What excites me now is the foundation we’ve built—one that supports real growth, uncapped commission opportunity, and the stability of a Fortune 100 organization behind us. After all these years, I’m still proud of where we are and optimistic about where we’re headed.

Comparion boasts about its size and carrier panel but has the industry's worst carrier restrictions and a terrible compensation plan. The local management in the Concord NH branch is demeaning, insensitive, and out of touch. If you don't hit your numbers one month it's your fault regardless of the activity you do. If you hit your numbers then you're still not doing enough and should have far exceeded them. The goals aren't unreasonable- if you had carriers to place business. Nearly every carrier they have has turned off their access to writing anything through them... including their parent company Liberty Mutual. They'll lie to your face and say independent agency's have it the same way... they don't. It's a difficult time either way, the industry is going through a lot of turbulence- but having a condescending manager who couldn't care less about you and your success makes an already hard time about 100x harder. Advice to management- Stop treating adults like children, stop lying
to your agents faces, and stop talking about your agents behind their back- while they're with the company and after they leave. It's unprofessional, and makes you look absolutely terrible to the people on the outside. 

One of the worst places I have ever worked. The company does not provide you with leads and you have to source every opportunity yourself with little-to-no support. Your salary drops to an abysmal number before you are even close to being properly trained and appointed. They have a set training program that doesn’t work for everybody and you are in a virtual class with people from all over the country with different regulations, carriers, and markets so it is useless to you. You’re supposed to get the rest of your training on the job but there is no trainer onsite. Your colleagues are expected to train you, with no compensation for such, while maintaining their own book of business. Management is not licensed so they can’t help you write business and will always direct you to peers for support. Some peers are willing to help while the others are well established and don’t have the time or need to offer it. Life insurance is mandatory and pushed heavily no matter what you are going through personally. There is a constant revolving door that is transparently, just a huge waste of people’s time. You’re better off being a server because at least then, you can pay your bills. 

From Liberty to Comparion this company has devolved into having the worst possible work culture. The toxic management structure is forcing people to work more for less and to do business that suits managers needs for contest wins/ notoriety and not necessarily what is best for the employee's paycheck. Contests are extremely important to management and forced onto every employee, even if they do not want to participate. There is a limited carrier panel with many restrictions and too many bodies utilizing them at one time, which adds onto the restrictions. Pay is often altered away from the rep's benefit and then also not paid out timely with no recourse to fix it. Agents have been gaslit and stonewalled at any direction when they bring up anything that results in large scale impacts to pay and how we conduct business. The company has turned into a reactive place that either has no clue about the issues that have been created or just does not care that people have them.
