This is the company formerly known as Ohio National Financial Services. It is not the same company it used to be though.

There are individuals in the organization who were sitting for 20+ hours a week with no work to do or no meetings. Meanwhile, there are other people in the same department who are swamped with work. Managers do not know how to delegate work properly so everyone has an equal share of the burden.

I know of someone who, because they had so little work to do, would actually go to the gym during work hours and go swimming. There are others who would just watch YouTube and play video games for the idle time they had. No one cares about it at this organization. It is a dream job for a majority of people though.

There is no cross collaboration even though that is currently being preached. People in the life silo have asked to work on projects in the annuities silo and get shot down. So they continue to sit around with no work on the life side (because there are no agents around to sell the product) because there are no projects.

Toxic management reigns supreme. You will be written up for being vocal about your grievances or concerns with where the organization is going or if you make remarks on calls about things everyone knows to be true but no one wants to say outside of a small inner circle for fear of retaliation.

Career growth is non existent unless you are in management. A moratorium was placed on promotions on the life insurance side unless you are either going to be managing people or your role changes significantly enough that it involves a new title. That's it. You cannot move to upper levels within your role anymore.

I asked a previous supervisor to help me get into software development within the organization. I was brushed off and told to just google how to do it. You are a number to these people. They reiterate about the 'leaders' in the organization but no one actually understands what true leadership is in the organization. No leaders exist at this company, just micromanagers who think they have reached some greater level of enlightenment because they can boss people around.

The PTO package is extremely generous and probably the only saving grace this organization has. Once you max out, you can accrue up to 30 PTO days annually and will stop accruing at 40 total days. I think once you hit 10+ years, you essentially get 8+ hours of PTO every pay period. Some positions are also 100% remote which allows for true flexibility.

The pay, however, is terrible. I required 3 or 4 'bonus' increases along with the general merit increase to reach the *median* level for my role based on the industry. That's right, the *median*.

Layoffs continue to occur. There were 2 within 2 weeks of each other in early 2024 and there are surely more to come. Stay away from this organization. They continue to layoff individuals with the knowledge to actually help the organization succeed. They lay off people who have business critical knowledge. There have been instances where people with extremely critical knowledge bases were laid off and then hired back within a month because the organization could not continue to do projects or help sell product without their knowledge. The C-Suite lacks foresight and is only interested in the organization's coffers rather than success.

Again, avoid this organization. I imagine they will start outsourcing here in the next 6-12 months and move out of their home office building within the next 2 years.

I liked working there because I knew my job well. I excelled at what I did and helped others too. It was a consistent workflow and every day was pretty much the same tasks. It was easy to get a flow going. I was a top producer on my team keying in high volumes of applications day in and day out. I had a high quality percentage (not many errors, several perfect days in a row in fact). There were ups and downs when it came to workplace culture. Several managerial changes and it finally got better. The hardest part of the job was making sure certain things were done so that impact errors weren't made which had serious consequences. The most enjoyable part of the job was the support system on my team. My coworkers were always there to lend a helping hand or pick you up if you were having a bad day. Always laughing and keeping the atmosphere upbeat. 

The company boasts about opportunities to advance but then they decided to lay off 300 people in one day, 20% of their associates to focus on just two business units. It was a hard pill to swallow, to be let go with a bunch of other people in a conference room meeting.

ONFS cared about employees. The new CEO repeatedly tells us he doesn’t care what we do, that’s up to our managers. Departments are being let go and their work is being moved to other departments, but there have been no adjustments to pay. Since Covid, half of the benefits are gone so the low pay is an even bigger deal. Extra work, fewer employees, inflation, fewer benefits, and comically low pay. People are leaving all the time and most of our area is looking to go elsewhere because of the pay. The company is trying to grow a new brand and are so focused on what the company looks like on the outside, they don’t care about the inside anymore. Promotions are being denied for the little people, while they post promotions of executives regularly. New job postings are listed with a higher starting pay than what some of our longer term associates are paid. They could quit, reapply, and get paid more that way than if they’ve been at the company for 5+ years. It’s very disheartening. 

Company prizes quiet compliant associates. Company advertises open and confidential communication, yet retaliation and retribution reign. IT Systems are very old. Systems documentation is practically nonexistent; and the associates who implemented them have either quit, retired or
were fired during the Sept, 2018 30% staff reduction. Projects are woefully understaffed, and necessarily miss their implementation dates. Priority change is constant. Keeping the antiquated systems successfully executing consumes so much of the IT resources, that updating, innovation, and strategic planning are short changed. One is asked to perform their task, and not informed of the big picture; resulting in poor
or incomplete systems designs. Politics/favoritism is rampant throughout the company. Most promotions are in the business departments, even though the IT department keeps every business department functional. Most IT managers are incompetent, mine was a functional alcoholic.

I am a former employee. I was laid off in Sept 2018. HR is a joke, they think they are therapists. When I had issues with some petty coworkers, they asked me if I told the person (who is still there) how it made me feel. With the mentality of that person, that would be ineffective. It would just egg her on more. Management is awful. I was supposed to let my manager know I was "posting out" for internal jobs. He received phone calls from other managers asking about me to which he had no idea. He asked me to go to a conference room to discuss which resulted in him assigning me courses to take on Communication which I have a degree in. I was "posting out" to get away from the petty coworker who was creating a hostile environment. I have reapplied a handful of times and have been rejected with the same HR templated email. I even applied for the same job I was let go from and they said that I didn't have the necessary qualifications for the job. 

No training structure, poor communication and poorer management who knows very little about the job their team does. 
Procedures are outdated, inconsistent and heavily debated amongst the team.  
Management does not know how to do the processing or have any formal training of how to do so leading to delegation of tasks that could easily be handled with effort and coaching.
management does not consistently follow up with or implement a plan for professional growth. They were always "handling a lot" or "under pressure" to make the department appear that it was not as unorganized or chaotic shifting focus from employee growth to keeping up appearances via production.


ONFS is a fine place to work if you are looking for a job ten years ago.  In IT I think it is important to have a good balance between the business and the IT workers, but here that is no the case.  The business does whatever it wants, including shadow IT, and the legacy employees do nothing to control the situation.  Their fail over setup does not meet the business' unreasonable requirements, but on the same bounds they do not want to pay for the performance. 

There is plenty of talent here and there is some good management, but there is also a wall of middle management filled with disingenuous phonies.  

Will always be behind as long as mediocrity is rewarded the same is stellar employees.

The good: beautiful campus, with many nice perks. Associates are kind, very loyal and driven to work hard to make a difference for the company. 

The bad and ugly: 50+ associates were laid off in 2017, then in 2018 a reorganization reduced 4 product lines to 2, and 300+ positions were eliminated (20% of staff). Very few managers were included in these cuts. Also, commissions were cut yielding multiple lawsuits. Yet annual reports and articles avoid these points. They somehow spin it all into a positive couple of years, providing profit sharing once again to save face. What was once an ethical, decent company, now seems questionable leaving many people "who have seen behind the curtain" scratching their heads. It does seem a bit like Oz.

Ohio National is a great company that cares about their employees.  We get great benefits including medical that is effective day 1,  covered parking, a fitness center, free medical clinic, cafeteria, paid vacation and holidays, profit sharing and more.

The company also provides all kind of professional development opportunities within the organization and promotes from within.

We have A LOT of activities around the company for everyone including wellness initiatives, community service, learning opportunities, associate resource groups, massage appointments, fitness trail, celebrations, and recognition.

There is a reason why the company has been named a Top Workplace for the past 8 years.

They have a thing here called the "abandonment rate". Its the amount of calls received in a day where people wait on hold for too long (over an hour) and then give up. It's 50%. 50% of the people who call the company, be they agents who sell the products or clients who own the products, wait for a VERY long time and give up. A gentleman who had had enough drove down to the corporate office to ask his question because he couldn't get through to anyone about his annuity.
