Don’t believe the hype about we’re here to honer  the gift of donation and we care about your deceased loved ones. It’s a factory, with only one goal make as much money as fast as possible. The average supervisor have no idea what their doing, and their human interactions and managerial skills are way subpar. If you ask for help they point at a policy binder, simply because they have no idea of what the jobs entails. They expect their staff to be available to them 24/7 and because the supervisors basically don’t move outside their offices, they expect you to both wear a radio and a phone while on duty.  That way they don’t  have to venture outside of their offices if you for example are working in an area with bad phone reception. If your a good worker they will promise you big raises, but when time comes to pay up the raises will be only a small fraction of what they promised. They will work you to the bone if you got skills while at the same time accepting unskilled workers just to fill up spots.  Turn over is completely unheard of,  so if you are a good, be prepared to get drained of all your energy and positivity to the point you will also be part of the endless turnover of good people. 

This job has one thing going for it: if you are super into the medical field and surgical dissection, it's the job for you. It will look great on my med school application. 

It fails absolutely everywhere else. They push you to complete as many recoveries possible (led by profit, not a mission to save lives); have zero empathy for rest periods or adequate meal time; play favorites with staff that are sexist and racist; discriminate against those that received a work-injury; there's no transparency with pay, sowing a lot of discord with staff; management is toxic, unaccountable, lacks any knowledge relating to recovery,  cannot be found when you need them, and start drama between technicians. I have never worked somewhere with so much negativity bred into the culture. 

There is no ability to advance; it's all nepotism. You have staff that have been working there for 10 years that are making the same amount of money as the rookies. 

There are a lot of bad habits there and management will decide who it's not ok from and push them out. Policy is not adhered to and all their competency exams are a joke. There is no real training, which led to my work injury. They throw you to the wolves and you're supposed to just figure it out. There's nothing elegant or respectable about it.

The pay is great. One of the few places you can make an easy six figures as a respiratory therapist or a paramedic. You actually make a difference which is nice.

With that being said. With time you’ll realize that management does not have your back. Management does not care about the donor’s or their families. It’s an unfortunate statement, but sack fees and the bottom line is what drives everything. 

To work at Donor Network West, you will have to accept the fact that sometimes you have to protect the donor family from Donor Network West. You will have to do things you don’t want to do for the sake of “every donor, every time,” even though you know it’s just an exercise in futility. 

The pay is great and the benefits are amazing, I just wish that the board of directors and stakeholders would take a look at how our current leadership is torching every hospital relationship for the sake of increasing donor volume. Our current CEO is ineffective and incompetent and doesn’t seem to do much besides writing a CEO Corner. Our VP leadership was hired to be “yes ma’am’s” and can’t cite anything but RUAGA. 

I worked as a donation coordinator at DNW.  The coworkers in the tissue department are amazing, but the supervisors and management, not so much.  The night shift doesn’t get any support.  The more skills you get, the more likely you are to be stuck on nights.  We would have half our staff call out at times, and no one would come in to support us.  Keep in mind, there was a supervisor on call.  They still wouldn’t come in.   The mission is great and the work we do is amazing, but it’s clear that they play favorites and don’t support their staff.  We started having open forums to give the element of supervisors and managers caring.  Nothing changed and the people that spoke up were labeled as trouble makers.  Maybe if they can clean house on their supervisors and managers they can manage to maintain people for more than a few years.  The turnover rate is through the roof and we’re constantly understaffed. 

Management and supervisors aren't very responsive to employee concerns and tend to be very apathetic about issues brought to their attention. Most departments are overworked and perpetually understaffed, and employees are overwhelmed with cumbersome and often redundant paperwork demands. Executive leadership and directors are detached from the work done by frontline staff and have unrealistic expectations. Pay is decent but opportunities for career development are lacking. Lots of workplace gossip, but very supportive colleagues. Mission is honorable but company values organs over tissues. Job provides good experience to advance in other surgical technician and healthcare fields.

I worked in tissue donation for a few years before switching over to DNW, and I feel more respected here than any other tissue bank I've worked at. It's great being able to log in from home, work your hours, and leave. I will say, training is not the best here, and can be disorganized at times, but if you get hired as a Per Diem Coordinator, you probably already have experience in this role. DNW is very supportive, has competitive pay, and great work culture. And of course it's rewarding providing families with the silver lining of tissue donation. But the worst parts are angry families (which you will deal with no matter which tissue bank you work for), no health benefits if you're Per Diem, and 12-hour shifts.

It is extremely difficult to get appreciation at this company. No matter how hard you work or how much effort you put in, it is never enough. Upper management likes to make you feel like your not working hard enough. When you make accomplishments and reach goals they don't recognize it. They will continue to enforce everything you are not doing correctly and not once mention how much you have achieved and did correctly. Very strong and difficult personalities run the upper management of Tissue Services. Not a great place to work.

Donor Network West has an incredible mission. However, the culture can be absolutely horrendous. Often, when something goes wrong, people within the company hunt for someone to blame. To the company: Be wary of this- if you continue to tolerate a blame-culture you will damage the morale of new employees. The people you train will build the new culture of the company- If you tolerate people treating one another poorly then no-one will go the extra mile to provide help when it is needed. My suggestion? Address this issue head on with training. Confront it in meetings, group discussions, etc. and do not try to cover it up.

The organization is doing amazing things. I feel that my ability to advance within the organization is not possible. In addition, the work / life balance is not conducive to my family being really happy. The hardest part of the job is I work 12 hour  shifts that rotate start and end times every month, so no consistency. The most enjoyable part of my job is  what I do, I feel as if I am contributing to a greater good in society. My co-workers are all great and very supportive of one another.  The management is good, not present often but are there when needed.

It's hard to stay motivated in this organization, morale is at a low.  It pays well but not much else.  People come in wanting to make a difference but that quickly fades once you realize it is never enough.  Most the staff just want to come in, get paid and leave.  The mission sounds great and meaningful but the reality of it is that it's all about money and numbers.  I am no longer a donor after working here, it ruined the gift of donation for me.
