Dallas Retirement Village

I work as a CNA at a retirement home, and my day to day work is never the same because I have to be very flexible for my patients. I assist my patients to do everything an adult needs to do within their daily living; getting dressed, personal hygiene, meals and eating, assist to activities provided, and getting ready for bed.
I have learned so much from my position, and my patients it is unmeasurable. I have learned to be very flexible within my work day, to pick up minute clues on patient's nonverbal needs/ desires/ pain, done by understanding, and being very aware of body language.
I have also learned that life is about being happy and helping others to be so are well. As a phlebotomist, I can change the way a patient thinks about having their blood drawn, when they have had a unpleasant one before with the tens minutes I will spend with them by being positive, giving them my full attention and having skill with the procedure of venipucture. 
My co- workers are great people, and I enjoy the team work we are able to have. 
The hardest part of my current position is losing patients to what the inevitable; death. However, the part of my job that gives me the most happiness is knowing that while they where in my care that they where taken care of as well as humanly possible; that I got to know the wonderful people of our former generation personally, heard their stories and that their stories live on in my memory.  

I worked graveyard shift alone (0000-0800), four nights a week.  I answered all calls which came into Independent Living, transferred phone calls, observed cameras focused on all outside doors, let people in who were working odd hours, or staying in one of the two rented out guestrooms.
The hardest part of the job was answering to pull cords when one of the 240 residents fell, or became sick and injured in the middle of the night.  I would call 911, then have to open the door for the EMTs', make copies of the individuals' emergency sheets, and run back to stay with the individual. 
Management changed the job description for just the night shift to include: Security Guard/ Floor Care and Call Center.  They phoned me at home, and told me they hired a man to replace me.
Enjoyable part of the job was talking to residents who came down to purchase food in the middle of the night, and interacting with those who needed copies, stamps and other assistance early in the mornings.

A typical day at work here was usually a good day, unless we were short staffed then it got kind of hectic; but besides that I enjoyed working with the residents and other employees! I learned a lot of interpersonal skills, self management, and how to work as a team at the same time. I really enjoyed getting to be aquainted with everyone that came in and out of the building. Managent was always helpful to try to accomadate my working needs and was always caring. The hardest part of the job was having to remember the way the residents would want their rooms cleaned, and their schedules. The most enjoyable part would have to be the feeling when Im done at the end of the day, knowing that I made all these people happy by helping them clean their rooms beyond their expectations!!

What is the best part of working at the company?
The residents have a 'Silent Annual Auction' and a Parking Lot 'Yard Sale' to raise money for RAE (annual bonus for the employees).  The residents are very supportive to each other too.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Poor management.  They do not look at what's working; and make changes without considering input from the staff.  They have a big turnover in staff, partly due to improper training.  Often when a staff person leaves, they do not re-hire, but have one person do two or three jobs (over expectations from one person).

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Making money is their bottom line, and of utmost importance.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I was laid off because I didn't sign a new 3 in 1 job description after putting in almost 6 years at the company.

DRV is a very rewarding place to work and the residents are wonderful! The staff works as a team, and the management will help out in a pinch if you ask them to. The work is stressful and very quick-paced, but extremely rewarding. The residents appreciate you for all that you do for them, and tell you often. I have worked in other assisted living facilities, and this is the most relaxed by far.

I have worked for them for 9 years and have seen management turn over several times, but I believe the management there is the best I have ever seen. They are open to addressing your concerns and has an open door policy, although sadly many people don't take advantage of this opportunity. If you do your job well and are interested in advancement, there are plenty of opportunities available.

I worked in maintenance for a time under an excellent director, who after being the only competent director for years decided to leave (for good reason). The new director (current director) is completely unfit for his role. Our team was large, skilled, and happy. We worked well and the residents enjoyed having maintenance staff who truly cared. Now the team is small, unhappy, and uncomfortable to say the least. DRV really needs to drop the pretense of being a "faith based organization" because they have strayed far from a mission of love and care. I'm speaking mostly of those in charge as everyday employees are usually good people who care. This place will continue to drive off good people in their pursuit of the bottom line.  Also I left because it's a tough business watching some truly wonderful elderly folks pass away 

Working with the residents to meet their daily needs assisting them in whatever way necessary, depending on the reason they were there to recover. I learned how to work with others well, being patient and understanding. Due to working night shifts I didn't have much contact with the management however they were very helpful when needed. Working with other members at DRV was a good experience mostly because people don't work at a place like that without a caring heart. The hardest part of the job for me was the hours since I worked all night, it was hard finding a good sleep schedule. I most enjoyed making a difference in the lives of those i took care of.

administrator is great, very helpful as are most the managers. Work life balance is fantastic, good support from the teams. Lots of people to work with who are generally very kind and make working easier. Decent pay. HR is rough with them giving incorrect information which has led to loss of money and not appearing to have total understanding of some issues, primarily the benefits which is one of the bigger reasons for no 5 stars. You had better make sure you know everything yourself because they won’t help much. Sometimes you get given work that’s not really yours to do.

Employees are overworked and disrespected by management. Favorited employees are allowed to break dangerous rules and aren’t even talked to about the incidences. Management treats employees as lower beings, showing no respect or consideration. The majority of the communication between management and employees is of management micromanaging or rudely sending you and your questions away to be answered by someone else. Treating you as if you’re a waste of their time. They are typically short staffed or employees are no call no shows. Management expects the staff to pick up all the slack without even a thank you or a bonus for having doubling or tripling your workload. 

This is a good place to work if you are looking to loosing your licence. Managers will report you to BON of Nursing upon hearing gossips/ rumors/ baseless allegations without even investigating. I SAY DO NOT WORK HERE. Day shift nurses on skilled side thinks they know everything and yet they don't. They will have NOC shift pre pop meds if they are short staffed, they will even change names on insulin for patients who has been discharged instead of discarding. I can go on and on about this place. HORRIBLE PLACE TO WORK. Gossiping is the norm of the day. Management leaves all the work for nurses to do.
