Discovery Mood & Anxiety's mission is admirable, and the work itself can be incredibly meaningful. The patients, families, and many frontline staff members are the reason many employees stay as long as they do. There are talented clinicians, nurses, and support staff who genuinely care about patient outcomes and work tirelessly to provide quality care.

Unfortunately, the organizational culture often makes that work far more difficult than it needs to be.

One of the most frustrating aspects of working here is the apparent lack of accountability. Expectations are not applied consistently across programs, departments, or individuals. High-performing employees and leaders are often expected to continuously pick up the slack created by others who face little to no accountability for missed deadlines, poor performance, or incomplete work. Over time, this creates resentment, burnout, and a feeling that doing a good job simply results in being assigned even more work.

There is also a noticeable perception of favoritism. Some employees appear to receive significantly more support, flexibility, and grace than others, while high performers are often held to increasingly higher standards without corresponding recognition. Advancement, influence, and opportunities do not always appear tied to measurable performance or program outcomes, which can be discouraging for employees who consistently exceed expectations.

Communication and compliance expectations can be wildly inconsistent. One program may receive constant emails, chats, and follow-up requests regarding a specific document, process, or metric, while another program may not be expected to produce the same documentation for months. This inconsistency makes it difficult to understand what success actually looks like and creates unnecessary frustration for teams trying to stay compliant.

Communication efficiency is another challenge. It is not uncommon for detailed information to be provided in emails, chats, reports, or meeting notes, only for the same information to be requested again later. Operational leaders often spend significant time resending information that was already provided because communications were not fully reviewed. This creates unnecessary duplicate work and contributes to the feeling that the time of on-site leaders is not valued.

The organization also struggles with a siloed approach between departments. Functions such as HR, Payroll, Compliance, Operations, Admissions, and Revenue Cycle often operate with competing priorities rather than shared goals. Patient-facing leaders are frequently expected to immediately respond to administrative requests regardless of ongoing clinical, staffing, safety, and operational demands. While every department's work is important, there is often limited recognition that residential and clinical leaders are simultaneously managing patient care, family concerns, staffing shortages, regulatory requirements, facility operations, and crisis management.

As resources continue to shrink and on-site leadership positions are reduced, responsibilities continue to expand. Rather than receiving additional support, local leaders are often left to solve increasingly complex problems on their own. The prevailing response can feel less like collaboration and more like, "You handle it, that's not our responsibility." Over time, this creates frustration, decreases morale, and contributes to leadership burnout.

Corporate expectations frequently feel disconnected from operational realities. Decisions affecting programs are sometimes made without sufficient understanding of how those changes impact patient care, staffing, admissions, scheduling, or compliance at the facility level. Teams are often expected to accomplish competing priorities simultaneously without the staffing, resources, or support needed to do so successfully.

The organization often rewards crisis management rather than prevention. Employees who proactively identify risks, maintain compliance, stabilize staffing, and prevent problems from occurring frequently receive little recognition. Attention is often directed toward issues only after they become emergencies rather than recognizing the work required to keep programs stable and successful.

Recognition overall is limited. Significant accomplishments, improved outcomes, successful audits, strong compliance performance, patient satisfaction, and operational improvements often receive little acknowledgment. Employees frequently feel that exceptional performance is viewed as the baseline expectation rather than something worth celebrating.

The company provides opportunities for growth and valuable experience in behavioral healthcare operations, but the workload, inconsistent expectations, lack of accountability, limited recognition, and growing disconnect between support departments and operational realities make long-term sustainability challenging.

This was the perfect position for a recent graduate to be introduced into the field. I loved the idea and "potential for growth", unfortunately, this position was full of empty promises. This specific location just opened up so I figured it would take time to get on its feet, but geez, I did not think it would be this bad. Again, I had little to no experience when starting this position. About one month in and I quickly became a shift lead ("promotion" without any pay increase nor benefits.) It felt good to feel trusted enough to be put in charge, little did I know that raised MANY red flags. I took my new responsibilities very seriously and would listen to any complaints from employees and search for improvement. I came up with many solutions and took them to management accordingly. No change was made. Did I mention, this facility went through 4 different managers in the short span of a year. Three of which lacked experience in either management or with the specific population we worked with. Management aside, it was clear we were struggling, I took it upon myself to sign up for the "Wellness Liaison" position. I attended monthly meetings and worked toward improving staff wellness. After 7 months with this new title and pushing to management the need for improvement, I was met with questions. Management did not understand why I was so concerned and continuously involving myself with improving staff wellness. They were well aware that I was a Wellness Liaison, but apparently, they had no idea what it meant. Seven months, after seven months they decided to look into the position and its responsibilities. They assumed the position meant that we would plan team-building exercises and not much else. Aside from that, we received little training before being put out onto the floor. It became such an issue, luckily they eventually listened and extended the training to one week before allowing new hires on the floor. (My first day on the job consisted of completing HR forms. I was told to complete any training on the floor as they were just "needing bodies on the floor in order to meet Ratio"). In that time, nor after, was I ever shadowed by a supervisor. A full year, and not once was I checked in on to ensure I was doing my job correctly. Luckily for them, I was actually passionate about this position and didn't cut corners. At the time, it felt good to be trusted that I would do the job right. Now I see how concerning it was of them to put someone with little to no experience in charge after having only been with the company one month. There was a clear division between the AM shift and the PM and Overnight shifts. Little to no accommodations were made outside of the AM shift. Again, luckily I'm independent enough to ensure that I am doing the best job that I can while the boss isn't around. In the inevitable event that I would make mistakes, I was promised additional training and even an opportunity to be mentored. Neither of which ever occurred. Many, if not all, hiccups I faced were easily preventable had I been given appropriate training/guidance (which I consistently requested). I worked above and beyond what was expected, I was constantly praised and thanked by coworkers and new hires (I took it upon myself to guide them the way I needed when I first started), management even mentioned all of the positive reviews left by patients upon discharge, yet not once did I receive any sort of credit. And it's not about receiving credit, I loved this job, I loved the company, I loved what I did. Unfortunately, my work ethic was taken advantage of yet not once did I ever feel appreciated. I was never commended, yet my performance was always being discussed around me in a positive manner. I had high hopes to be with this company for a very long time. Unfortunately, I was let go exactly one week before an upcoming surgery they had known about for months. How convenient for them.

Review of My Experience as an Employee
A Typical Day at Work:
A typical day at work was often challenging and exhausting. The workload was consistently overwhelming, and despite my dedication and commitment, it felt like my efforts went largely unrecognized. The lack of a differential for overnight shifts was particularly disheartening, as it did not reflect the effort and disruption to personal life such shifts entail.
What I Believe I Learned:
Throughout my time there, I learned the importance of setting personal boundaries and advocating for oneself. The experience also highlighted the significance of finding a workplace that values and acknowledges the hard work and dedication of its employees. Additionally, it provided insight into the dynamics of working in an environment where not everyone may have the necessary experience for their roles.
Management:
The management left much to be desired. The program director's unprofessional behavior, such as walking around barefoot and allowing a pet dog to roam and soil the premises, contributed to a lack of professionalism within the workplace. This attitude seemed to trickle down, affecting how other issues were handled and how staff were treated.
Workplace Culture:
The workplace culture was marred by a lack of boundaries, particularly from some of the associate therapists. This, coupled with the presence of mental health technicians without sufficient practical experience, often led to a chaotic and unstructured environment. The infestation of rats and the malfunctioning air conditioner further compounded the negative atmosphere, affecting morale and productivity.
The Hardest Part of the Job:
The hardest part of the job was coping with the lack of support and recognition from management, alongside the physically and emotionally taxing nature of the work. This was exacerbated by the poor working conditions and unprofessional behavior witnessed within the team.
The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job:
Despite these challenges, the most enjoyable part of the job was the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those we served. Building rapport with clients and witnessing their progress, however small, was rewarding and provided a sense of purpose amidst the difficulties.
In conclusion, while there were significant challenges and areas in need of improvement, the experience offered valuable lessons on the importance of a supportive and professional work environment.

This company, the Dade City/Zephryhills location specifically, did not provide patients with beneficial supervision/care and did not respect their employees. Management (Program directors and milieu manager) does not enforce company procedures for the patients. Several patients have said, "I don't care what the rules are, I can do what I want because no one is going to do anything." Management also does not support technicians in their line of work. Patients know this and act on this. Patients are permitted to be utterly disrespectful to staff and do not receive any sort of consequences for their inappropriate behavior. Patients are sometimes kept weeks longer than necessary even though therapists have stated there is nothing the facility can provide them with anymore. Some patients who require a higher level of care are kept at this facility even though patients AWOLs constantly and are aggressive towards staff. It is as if the management/company cares more about the profit than the patients' wellbeing or their employees' well-being. Most staff are timid and do not correct inappropriate behaviors creating an inconsistent and unsupportive environment. Multiple patients have snuck off the property in the middle of the night on multiple occasions (without being caught) and confessed to actions and did not receive consequences. Security at this facility is zip ties on the back doors of patients' rooms (not very secure). Management does not respond to emails when asking or reporting important information. Management will take a patient's word over their staff members. There is no training for your position. Overall, management seems not to care about improving anything only "getting through the day." Instead of buying cookies for "staff appreciation" management should truly listen, respect, and support their team. But buying a box of cookies is easier and less work for them.

I will highlight some pros. If you want to develop thick skin and be exposed to a variety of diagnosis, this is the place for you. If you want to learn about ways to "counsel" and deescalate high stress clients, this is the place for you. 
This company has the potential to be "great" and provide better service for clients and staff but falls very short with management and lack of initiative. The driving force behind this company is insurance money. Yes, they will keep a child longer if there are linked to premium insurances such as Optum, Cigna, etc. If the company wanted to make a difference within the community, they would allow for the underserved population to also be eligible for treatment. They would also release clients once stability has been reached. 
Management and administration claims to "reward" and recognize their staff, but it's simply an act of favoritism. Those that work hard, abide by rules, and maintain equilibrium throughout the shifts are often overlooked. If management wants to reward their staff, they would provide opportunities for growth, provide better benefits, and not pay them minimum wage. Seriously, In-N-Out workers make more than counselors that hold bachelors degrees. 
Insurance companies are charged nearly one thousand dollars a night per child, where does all this money go? It certainly does not go to the food or location amenities. 
Do better Discovery Mood and Anxiety. Treat your employees like valuable people and provide them with more time off and sick pay instead of slandering them when they do take a day off....Which is illegal and unjust. If an employee calls off of work for whatever reason, it is the manager's job to find a replacement, not the employee. 

One of the worst workplaces I’ve ever worked in. Management is a joke quite honestly. They outright said in a team meeting that techs shouldn’t say that rules are set up by higher ups because that makes patients dislike them and it hurts their feelings. Techs were expected to constantly establish themselves as being somehow not responsible at all but also fully responsible for all changes or rules at the facility, which might have been easier has techs even been informed of changes that were made. Management’s attempts at handling conflict between coworkers was laughable at best, and harmful at worst. Managers had their favorite and least favorite workers, and they made it very clear. Favorites were essentially allowed to say and do whatever they wanted to patients and coworkers, even if it was a clear ethics or HR violation. Workers that knew how to cozy up to managers would be rewarded, sometimes with trips to other facilities, even if they had received multiple complaints from patients. All in all, his place does not focus on patients or mental health at all. Patients are spoken down to and treated like children, and sometimes threatened with punishments (ex. Having to stay longer) if they didn’t “behave correctly”. The favoritism extended to patients too, where multiple patients could break the same rule and only one would be punished. The only interests this location cares about are money and getting to create their own cliques between workers and patients. Don’t work here unless you want to have plenty of ethical dilemmas or problems to discuss when you attend classes, or want to see a shining example of what NOT to do to be a well functioning workplace 

This company is for-profit mental health care. I felt that within a few months of working there. In my time at Discovery, profits were almost always put ahead of patient wellbeing. This was seen in the sloppy admissions screenings that consistently sent inappropriate patients to us, to regional management continuing to allow admissions when there were not enough staff to support programming and safety, and clinical team having no say or input on who is accepted into the program. 
As an employee they wrung every last drop of work they could out of me. I worked 60 hour weeks and got no extra compensation or comp time for that. Clinical training was non existent, professional development was non existent, and I paid for all CEUs out of pocket. Staff turnover was incredibly high as pay was incredibly low for all positions across the board and working conditions were terrible. I felt exploited for the vast majority of my time working there. Clinically I came in contact with a wide variety of diagnoses, but I had to figure out how to treat them completely by myself. In a residential setting I was on-call one-two weeks per month and received no extra compensation or time off when I spent hours of my evening managing crises. Ethics felt questionable at best to me and ultimately that was the reason I left.
My impression from speaking to other employees up and down the east coast is that my experience is not an isolated one. It appears to be a wide spread systemic issue. 
I hope Discovery can really look at staff feedback instead of blaming “the great resignation” and turn things around. 
As a side note, if people are quitting en masse it is for a reason and those reasons should be addressed. Feedback is a gift, please accept it instead of blaming and shaming :)
At this time, please save yourself the headache and do not work here.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I regret my time working with this company. The management consistently made poor decisions by firing dedicated, hardworking employees while retaining those who were clearly unfit for the role. The two new directors, who lack basic managerial skills and appear under qualified to oversee a mental health program, fostered a hostile, adversarial work environment. They showed favoritism and were not open to feedback or conversation. There was a clear pattern of unethical practices and retaliatory behavior whenever concerns were raised. The workplace culture was toxic, with an overall lack of support, respect, and accountability. I would not recommend this employer to anyone seeking a healthy, professional work environment. I would not recommend this program for parents looking for a residential program. If you like stress and low pay, using Microsoft teams with micro-aggression remarks and comments and until you bleed teams out of your behind at the end of the day, along with gas lighting daily; then this is the right place for you to work at. Have fun.

Running 5 groups daily with little or no time to get your notes in on time!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic and gas lighting on teams as to what was said, constantly moving the goal post as to your daily work load!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Coming in setting up early off the clock just so I could have a manageable work day. Answering that Brady Bunch doorbell when co workers sat on their butt and did nothing and answering questions as a Tech that the program director should've been doing, stepping up for her responsibilities!

Working in a residential treatment program is not an easy setting to work in, it operates 24/7, 365 days a year, and the patients we serve continue to present increasingly more distressed and struggling as time progresses throughout the years. I have grown so much in my work here that it is never dull, there is always an opportunity for learning and growth, and it is fast paced. What you put into your work here is going to be what you get out of it. I love working in mental health and with teenagers and I try to bring that passion with me daily. There are days where the work feels never ending or it may be crisis after crisis but we all do the best that we can always keeping safety and the highest quality patient care in mind. I love the autonomy, freedom, and flexibility I have where I am not micromanaged but I also have support when I need it. I appreciate the work culture of everyone being treated as equals, an always learning mentality, and trying to always empower one another to do and be better. Work and life balance takes time to navigate a balance of it as there is always more work to be done and timelines to meet but it is capable with prioritizing items, using coworkers, and setting boundaries. It is documentation heavy in this clinical setting but I am a better clinician due to it. The best part of the job is being able to see the patient's growth and progress from when they first arrived and to discharge and seeing them blossom into the best versions of themselves and the quality family work and changes made due to the efforts made in the program here!

Rewarding work, hands on experience was how I learned best. 90% of the patients were great to work with. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Little work-life balance, not a lot of management support. Trainings were somewhat helpful but needed to be more thorough. The pay did not match up with the work I was doing. I was one person doing 2 jobs. While being paid more, it was such a demanding role and I felt like I deserved more. Crisis intervention was not something covered well in the training and I struggled to excel in that area. I really did my best but overall, struggled a lot. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment was less than optimal. Rats, mice, and roaches roamed in the facility. Disorganized office spaces and out of compliance areas of the facility. Work culture was not ideal, lots of overtime. Worked a 14hr shift, due to someone not showing up and was unresponsive with commutation. Had a live outbreak the same week. Patients felt the tension among staff and they felt the discomfort and uncertainty.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful, overwhelming, and mismanaged most days I got into work. Enjoyed talking with patients and having group together. Didn’t have a lot of time to catch up on work emails or computer based tasks - due to being understaffed. Struggled with burn out and overextending myself.
