The doctors and nurses at the hospitals are great.

Unfortunately the IS department management team does not match up to excellence of the doctors and nurses. Management team is not flexible and does not encourage growth within. Fact: outside people hired above those who work there.

Employees are not acknowledged and not rewarded for their hard work. Fact: There is no merit raises. You get same raise for working self to death as someone who is not competent.

Leadership thinks IS employees should be slaves to their jobs and work more than what is standard. Rather than hire more people you are expected to work above 8.5 standard hours and make up for the management team's inability to staff open positions. Fact: open positions not filled and rest of team has to take on more. You take work home but cannot use it for comp time and still expected to be in office for 8.5 hours each day. No overtime pay.

Most unhappy group of IS employees ever encountered. Fact: people do not smile and complain all the time.

Fact: Leadership does not acknowledge employees when he passes them. Makes you feel like insignificant and not liked. If he doesn't like you he doesn't say hello and ignores that you are even his employee even though you worked there for years and years unless he likes you which is unfair and rude.

Leadership not trusting of employees. Fact: Snow Policy-when it snows tells people not allowed to work from home but come in. People work from home anyway cause need to keep systems running but have to use vacation day cause of his policy. Consultants get to work from home when planes cant come in because of snow but own employees who keep systems running are not trusted. Fact: salaried employees expected to swipe in and swipe out like hourly employees. No extra pay for extra hours but good talking to if you leave early.

Fact: employees given 10 sick days each year but if you call out more than 3 times in a year you are given warning and next time written up.

Lots of good people left recently and others are looking to leave. No attempt by management team to care or do anything for those who they find out are leaving since only interested in warm bodies to fill chairs.

Wouldn't accept position with this IT department. If you are going for different kind of job in the hospital, then you will enjoy Penn. If IT person, you will not be happy.

I started as a dietitian with the eating disorders program at Penn Medicine-Princeton Health. It was my first job out of my internship as a dietitian, despite having a lot of experience working in eating disorders while becoming a dietitian. It was promoted as an entry-level job within a small unit with a supportive manager, competitive salary and amazing benefits. Everything turned out not to be true except the benefits. When I interviewed I was offered way below market rate for dietitians in the area (because it was my first job, I accepted anyway). I was only given 2 weeks’ training with no option to extend the training time before I was put on the job. I had a small caseload which was great because I really got to know my patients and their families. But that was the only bright spot. 

At first my direct manager seemed really kind and supportive and was willing to meet with me daily or weekly to assist in my learning and help me correct any mistakes I made and the expectations of the role were clear. But when I asked for continued supervision with my direct supervisor and overall supervisor after 6 months, I was told I “shouldn’t need it”. This is eating disorders. You always need supervision… I also felt undervalued and demeaned by other staff members, with the exception of a few of the other RDs I worked with who were always open with me and caring.

In the months leading up to the 6 month review, I asked my direct and overall supervisors for feedback and except for a few things I was able to correct, I was told I was doing well. Then at my 6 month review, I was ambushed with countless things that I was apparently failing miserably in, despite client satisfaction with my performance being high. I was never given an opportunity to provide a self review or defend myself. I was then told I would need an additional 3 month probation period and that I would be given the paperwork to sign in the coming weeks. I asked for the paperwork multiple times and was always shrugged off. Finally, after realizing I was being gaslit, I resigned. I had high hopes for this job but if there was ever a poster example of a toxic work environment, this would be it. New RDs beware. 

Each day in general surgery is an adventure and a challenge.  There are days I am directed to cover a position because of an absence; I would do clinical in these cases and assist in office procedures.  

I complete and submit disability papers for each surgical practice (10 physicians):  general, colorectal, thoracic, breast oncology; this also includes communicating with insurance companies.

In addition, my responsibility is to obtain pre-certification / authorization for radiology studies for each surgical practice.

As well, initiate and correspond with the employer at the patient’s request; i.e., advising of upcoming surgery, return-to-work, etc.

Surgery scheduling (dedicated to one surgeon):  the most intense portion of my responsibilities.  The cases include anything from the removal of a gallbladder to performing a procedure regarding life-altering health issues.  When scheduling a surgery, it is necessary to:

•schedule Pre-admission Testing;  

•pre-cert and schedule studies that must be completed prior to the procedure;

•obtain various clearances (if needed), i.e., cardiac, vascular, and so forth;

•coordinate providers’ schedules if surgery requires multiple surgeons 

After the surgery is scheduled, I place the case on the OR grid for surgical preparation.  One last thing with surgery scheduling, is working the surgeon regarding the case order and arrival times; then confirming case order is correct in OR.

Additional responsibilities include processing and completing all correspondence written by the surgeon. 

There are occasions I am asked to assist to answer telephone calls.  

With the above being mentioned, I do touch daily each of the above areas, with the exception of covering other positions and answering phones.      

I like to think of myself as a person that is adaptable in any situation with immediate change and, at the end of the day, know that I have had an impact on a life.

If your an ophthalmic photographer don't work for Penn!! Yes, there benefits are great, but the work environment is horrible. Management is a joke. It is currently managed by an inexperienced recent college graduate who I quote stated "If there is a zombie apocalypse, I'm going to hide in the art museum"!.  Not to mention there were 3 other photographers in the department ranging from 9-20 yrs with Penn, who did not get the management position. Most days its not busy so your left to sit & look at a blank computer screen for hours on end. All of the testing is done in one big room, with multiple machines. There are no curtains or room dividers. Patients can look at other patients images while they are getting there test done!! Yes, that it is a major HIPPA violation!! When there are Penn inspections, management comes around & coachs you on what to say to the inspectors just in case they happen to come into the photography room & inquire about there not being any patient privacy in the room.  They allow the photographers to start IV lines who have never had any medically training. They have a 2 hr class within Penn held by an RN with a fake arm! Needless to say patients get stuck multiple times due to inexperience & uneducation. After IV lines are started there is no protocol within the department to chart which arm the IV was placed in, times it was attempted, complications, name of dye injected, lot number, expiration date etc. They (including management) don't chart of any of that information which is completely illegal & insane!! The 180 probationary period is ridiculous. If your late or absent 1 time you can & will be terminated. The employees within the department are strangely different to put it nicely. This was the worst job I have ever had. I dreaded going into work, which is crazy because I love the field I'm in. Steer clear of Penn ophthalmology as a photographer it's not worth the headache & frustration.

The University of Penn hospital is a very good place to work, U-Penn is one of the ten best Hospitals to work for in the nation. A typical work day is like drawing blood on about one hundred and fifty Patient to about two hundred patient, very busy place to work. I don't regret my time of service here at Penn, my service at Penn is worth it because I did learn a lot of new  computer skills, bed side manners and great customer service and diversity skills dealing with the public, most especially sick people. My job is very stressful, but we work as a team so it appears very easy. We have a great management team in the lab, what struck me most is how approachable my managers are, they listen to workers complaints,  and concern when problems arrives, the are very respectful  and willing to go beyond to make sure the work place is a save place to work.  all grievances  are meet with concern and attention especially when its come to Patient and Phlebotomy relations. We are all men and women so we try as a team to respect and get along with  one another because what happened in the lab reflect on every body so we try to wash each others back for the smooth operation of our department. The hardest part of the job is working short of workers on a very busy days like Mondays and Thursdays, but for the most part the job is very easy because we were properly trained. Less busy days are the most enjoyable part of the job, down time to chit chat with co-workers until it pick up again. Another enjoyable part of the job is when we have our lab week or Christmas party, we get food drinks and gift for every employee. things are a little different now but we use to get bonuses.

The HUP Patient Scheduling and Registration Call Center at 1500 Market Street, in Philadelphia, is a concentratedly toxic environment that practices all of the required nuances to establish a racial, gender and educational divide among its staff. This philosophy was eagerly embraced and implemented by the department's new supervisor and cronies immediately upon assuming administrative authority, and is supported by the University of Pennsylvania's Human Resources Department via its position of neutrality to such an extreme that the Human Resources Department is nonexistent. A typical day consists of answering a work queue that is diverse, desperate and disheartened because each caller is persistently manipulated to believe their medical condition is of the highest importance, when in fact the patient is being placed in a cookie cutter system of ambivalence. It's Ground Hog Day, everyday in HUP's Call Center. It is painful to be a part of. The everyday citizen is simply unaware of the charade until the 3rd, or 4th, telephone call for help. It's the old American adage, and practice, of "who you know" that applies to both patient and Call Center Representative that defines daily encounters.

Literally, no one is minding the store. Representatives have responded to these circumstances by becoming increasingly detached, e.g., personal phone calls with the patient on hold, going into auxiliary mode to text family and friends, or simply lying to a patient to shorten the call for statiscal goals. Toxicity has never been more professionally practiced than at the HUP Patient and Registration Call Center, 1500 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA. The best of luck, regardless; as here you are nothing more than a minion.

Working for this organization was the best start on my career path journey. This was not just working for a fitness center, this was learning the ins and outs of how sales works, including self- lead generation, outside prospecting, sales presentations, and above all management skills. I started as a sales counselor, working in a team environment but held responsibility for my own productivity and individual sales goals. At this level, time management and self- motivation was extremely important. I progressed fast and soon was rewarded a promotion as Assistant Sales Manager. Here I learned to not only manage my own time and productivity, but to also manage and help train a team of anywhere from 5 to 8 sales counselors, while maintaining the status of being the top producer in sales. About a year after that I became promoted to Sales Manager to solely run my own team, and train sales counselors to become future managers for the company. During the period of 3 years while I was in management, I temporarily filled in as General Manager while maintaining my Sales Manager status, so I learned operations and a little bit of budgeting. The most enjoyable part of the job was the overall learning experience, and also the fact that I met and helped so many people on a daily basis. The hardest part of the job was that there was a high turnover due to the fact that the sales counselors were not paid well. However, I am very grateful for the experience and being able to have worked with and for some very knowledgeable individuals.

Clinical Internship
- Clinical rotations in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Urinalysis, and Immunohematology.
- Immunohematology: Performed ABO/Rh typing, antibody identi!cations, maternal/cord blood studies, DATs/
direct Coombs, antigen typing, & compatibility testing.
- Microbiology: Performed culture and sensitivity studies on blood, urine, body tissue, sputum, and CSF specimens.
Stained and read direct smears. Prepared specimens for ProVue® and BacTec™ FX instrumentation analysis.
Screened stool samples for C. difficile on illumigene® C.difficile Molecular Diagnostic System.
- Chemistry: Prepared QC and calibration reagents and checked specimens for integrity and prepared them for
processing on cobas® 6000 series analyzers. Recognized and interpreted #ag messages and reported critical
results to the appropriate clinician(s). Performed molecular testing on respiratory samples using FilmArray®
multiplex PCR platform.
- Hematology: Performed QC and ran specimens on CELL-DYN Sapphire, miniVidas®, and BCS® XP instrumentation
platforms. Interpreted CBC histograms. Prepared and evaluated blood smears. Performed manual WBC
differentials, platelet estimations, reticulocyte counts, and ESR tests. Performed and interpreted PT, & PTT
coagulation studies & calculated INR.
- Urinalysis: Performed set-up and QC of iQ®200 Automated Urine Microscopy & Aution™ Max AX-4280 Automated
Urine Chemistry Analyzers. Identi!ed specimens that required microscopic examination and performed re#ex
testing. Identi!ed and quanti!ed RBCs, WBCs, bacteria, casts, and crystals found in specimens. Performed occult
blood and pregnancy testing.

The rating system that Indeed has here needs to be changed so that Job Security and Advancement are two separate categories. These are two different things and it is in this category that Penn Medicine could do better.  Job security is a 5 star, but advancement is about a 2 star. Some employees have opportunities laid in front of them on a silver spoon while others have to scratch and claw just to be considered.  There is heavy favoritism and even borderline nepotism in this department. All employees are not held equally accountable for their performance.  The best thing about this place is that once you get in here, you would have to do something really crazy or stupid to get fired.  To their credit, Penn Medicine, at least this department, doesn't do very much laying off, or firing people.  Once you are in, you are in. 

The culture has changed over the years to one of inclusion to one of suspicion, exclusion and "it's not who you know, but who knows you."

Overall I still give it 4 stars as this is still one of the best places to work.

Pros
Friendly co-workers who sympathize with what you're going through.
Each practice is slightly different, so it might not be as bad in other departments.
The company name will look good on your resume.
If you like working in healthcare, then this is the job for you.

Cons
-You're confronted with patients literally yelling at you. For no reason. Some of them have mental problems but it is still is frustrating.
-Every so often, patients bring bed bugs into the office.
- Some of the docs and nurses are yelling at you too. So you're getting it from both sides. Some of the docs will even talk down to you in front of their patients.
- You're locked into the same position for a year. Unless, you get a promotion. But, in reality many PSR's have been in the same position for over ten years.
-If you receive tuition assistance, you're locked into another year of service. 
-Management doesn't have your back. Being that these jobs a often politically obtained, some managers lack in competency as well.
- Low pay.
- Totally not worth it if you have a college degree.
- Very disorganized. There's no standard systems in place for communication or work flow. So it makes it very difficult to do your job.
- Stressful
- No parking
- Can be a tough commute depending on where you live.
- The health insurance is not as good as some private companies. Which is weird being that this IS a health system.
- Very few paid holidays
- No snow days
- The max vacation time you can earn is about 4 weeks, which takes a very long time to accrue.
