My internship did not go well. Thank God I started a job the same day they let me go. My manager would listen to YouTube videos all day, but made it a big deal when he saw me listening to my own. He fired me after I told him how it was hard keeping track of what I was doing because he would just walk up to my desk anytime he wanted. They keep hiring interns because they want to save money and not really invest in people. This is how management gets bigger bouses, by not sharing. Most people working there have either been there for 10 years or longer, or have had family members work there in the past or even currently. They make interns believe there's a chance to get hired, but that's not very likely. I was given a mentor who sat right behind me, but never even said hi or checked on my progress. The job consisted of a manager who micro managed, but did not know enough of what he was managing. He hardly knew anything about the processes in my job. I would ask him a question, and he'd go ask someone else every time. It made me uncomfortable how much he would just pop up at my desk with no warning, interrupting me when trying to learn new things, he'd also ignore me when I told him I wanted to learn new things.What made me the most uncomfortable was how much everyone would ask each other personal questions just to find out info about them, andd WOD then tell all that person's business. There were alot of people who had worked there a long time who could do things that others couldn't, like using the company's phone for personal calls, and I mean everday.

My main job was Transcribing for the Claims Insurance Dept in Charlotte, NC. Although I did much more than that. Besides Transcribing Letters, Statements, Legal Documents, and other correspondence for about 8-9 Claims Adjusters, and Supervisor, I also performed Data Entry, Filing, Mass Copying for law suits, Mail, assisted with Accounts Receivable/Payable s when coworker was absent. I helped other coworkers with other task as needed when time permitted. I love staying busy.

I enjoyed my job and the challenge that it brought, taking care of several different adjusters, and my supervisor. I have always loved detailed work, and organizing is something that I have always been very good at. I am very detailed oriented and like everything exactly as it is suppose to be according to what I have been asked by my supervisor. I love to work alone, or I can work with groups. I am basically a person who is focused and enjoys responsibility along with helping out whenever possible.

I enjoyed my time working for EMC as an analyst there, and would work there again if the opportunity presented itself.  Unlike other companies I have worked for, the work/life balance at EMC is great, and seldom found myself having to work outside of normal operating hours. The company, despite being large, still had a "family feel" to it, as you could easily encounter upper management and executives eating in the cafeteria with the other employees.
That being said, this was also a bit of the downside of the company, as it did seem to keep them a bit behind the curve regarding IT advancements and business process philosophy.  This feel leaves them a good 10 years or so behind standards of their peers in the industry.  If they can find a way to catch up on these areas without losing their soul, they would definitely be a full 5-star company to work for.

The corporate culture is changing at this company. It appears that the home office in Des Moines, Iowa is dictating the terms of employment and job requirements. The claims mgmt has given automy to its claims personnel until recently. Home office and the district superintendents seemed to be dictating the investigation and settlement authority. This is resulting in longer hours at work and more stress. The coworkers are great to work with. The most enjoyable part of the job was the variety of cases. From munincipal/school law claims, to asbestos/prodiucts liaiblity claims to large litigated file cases involving auto/ liability claims. The hardest part of the job was wearing too many hats that involved public relations with broker/agents and meeting thoses entities expectations, and not receiving the support of management.

This company has went way down from when I first started. Micromanagers in some departments and no supervision in others for a great lack of consistency. They no longer care about their employees. Certain supervisors show favoritism and will tell lies on you to make themselves look good or to keep themselves out of trouble. They will ask you to speak up about things that are concerning you but in the end nothing ever changes but grows worse. I wouldn’t recommend working for this company now as the culture has turned toxic and very stressful. I felt forced to resign because management would not take it upon themselves to investigate issues with supervisors that should be fired or at minimum given corrective action. 

EMC is a decent company to work for. The facilities are well kept and the other employees are rather nice. The benefits package is top notch, with ok 401k, super healthcare, and a pension system. 
Employee advancement is sporadic. Most advancement is due to an old employee retiring. There are some departments that have much more turn over than others, and I wouldn't want to work for the manager of those departments.
It is a very stable company that is not prone to rounds of layoffs and hiring binges like other corporations in the area. 
Corporate culture continues to lag behind the norms, It is very 1990's, still getting used to the idea of wearing polo's instead of suit coats.

Upper management appears disconnected from day-to-day realities, and the management culture is often unhealthy. In retrospect, repeated assurances that this was “the best department in the company” should have been recognized as a red flag rather than a strength.

There is a lack of centralized processes and standard operating procedures, resulting in poor and unreliable data. Many members of upper management have spent their entire careers at this organization, which has limited exposure to best practices from other environments. Longevity at a company does not automatically equate to effective leadership, and this gap is evident.

A lot of burnout from too much change too fast and higher and higher expectations. A lot of changes needed but not managed well.  Some areas have a lot of turnover which is telling.  New manager promoted who is unqualified, several instances where toxic people are allowed to stay or manage, may be due to higher up friend or reference so don’t feel like you can say anything; this has happened several times. Often heard that this was not the same company anymore.  New people coming in have all the answers and longer term less valued. Remote is nice but I don’t think it is best for culture, more disconnection and less teamwork.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good benefits. 38.5 hour work week, overtime discouraged. So you lose money not being able to work at least 40
hours

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Corporate is demanding. No room to advance unless you’re DEI. No real incentives as they give everyone a small amount if you hit the company goals. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Lukewarm at best. If you’re a sheep, you’ll fit in fine. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Typical work from home. Emails, your workload, zoom meetings, phone calls.

On the first day I started work at EMC, a coworker told me "yeah, there's a lot of nepotism here".  But that was only the tip of the iceberg.

EMC is paying the price of twenty years of deferred upgrades to their business software.  They stayed on old systems for far too long, until the only other entity using the same software was the government of State of Iowa.  And the state was further ahead on upgrading than EMC was.
