Upper management spends most of the money on opening more clinics rather than improving the ones that are already in disrepair. They keep pushing to make more profit while simultaneously cutting staff and constantly increasing the workload on those that are still there without any form of compensation for the extra workload, and they do it all while they cut away at the few benefits that make this low paying job worth it. Then at the end of the year they give themselves bonuses and pats on the back while they threaten to take non-upper staffs small bonuses away if they do not meet key results for increasing profit.

In clinic things are not much better. The managers say they will change things when asked but rarely do. There are also a lot of long-term staff that are very complacent and are very lazy on a good day, and horrible on a bad day, not good at their job whatsoever, like incorrect medication administration, make fun of patients loudly with other bad staff bad, horrible. The few staff that do their job are overworked because they have to pick up slack for those who don't. When managers are confronted with these issues, they get defensive and protect the people that do these things, as a result, not many people speak up and the ones that do are quickly shut down through words or lack of action with the problems at hand, especially when it involves staff member that has been here for 10-25 years who has become close with managers.

Typical day as a MA. Room patients, You learn as you go and most of the providers are easy to work with. The hardest part of the job is changing the table paper roll. Just kidding. Its the least thing I like to do in the midst of my day. El Rio is a very friendly and efficient place to work. Please do not believe the salary information. Most MAs do not make anywhere near 13.00 and hr. However, the benefits are good. The most enjoyable part of the job is making a difference in someone's life. El Rio has a lot of standard orders for the MAs. This means you do have to wait to be told to do a urine dip, pregnancy test, finger stick, etc. You can use your best judgment, and that's what I like most because I don't like being told what to do all the time. I also wanted to note that El Rio is a diverse clinic. I would recommend hiring more blacks, but overall the staff is very diverse. Be ready to grow mentally, be ready to advance your skills, and be ready to have fun in a relaxing and educational environment.

To begin management  wants you to be outside the majority of the time rain or shine hot or cold  , in honesty I wouldn't even try to bother enforcing some policy's cause the majority of the staff have a God complex mentality especially the doctors and nurses. The organization has expanded so much it has left the department overstretched thus PTO has been frozen until further notice due to staffing shortages. The majority of the clinics are in bad areas of town i.e oracle & prince, irvington & 6th, grant & dodge these areas have high drug use and for some reason have the most problems . The other clinics are ok just homeless camping out and rude paitents here and there also be prepared to drive around town every 2 weeks they place you at a different clinic every 2 weeks which is nice though cause you aren't stuck at one location but with current gas prices it adds up . The good things are the denifits when I get dental work done I usually pay around 5 to 8 bucks to procedures.

The environment from top down is toxic. Management style is favoritism and bullying. I have heard more than one manager gossip and make condescending jokes about employees on many occasions and blatantly display favortism. They show little respect for the employees. Employees literally bring food and do favors to appease management. This company has a bully problem from the top down. 
Due to this the employee pool is cliquey and unfriendly. I have witnessed people being singled out, gossiped about relentlessly and torn down on the job by coworkers. 
This company is top heavy and despite their mission statement, employee benefits, pto, holidays are constantly being chiseled away and workload increased to squeeze as much out of employees as possible. 
Instead of investing in employees who serve the community this nonprofit spends the federally funded income on upper management salaries and expansion. 



The work day starts with getting the work area ready and calling back patients in to the exam room and getting the BP, heart rate, pulse, temp and putting it in the computer for the patient's chart. Letting the Doctor know that the patient is ready for them. I learned a lot for the patient's on the way people feel, able to do things well and leadership skills. Working with the management was a big help knowing what know doing what they do and being able to talk to people as they would. working with my co-workers was great, being able to see and know how every on works and how they do things. The hardest part of my job was being able to make the patients happy when there not so happy or feeling so good but when I do its the best feeling I could get. The most enjoyable part of the job is when my patients get to leave happy and knowing that they got the help they wanted and needed.

El Rio dental was great when I first started then it changed when they decided to change up supervisors and managers positions ! My original supervisor was the best and I knew one day she would leave and it would be a disaster after which it was the new managers/supervisors do not communicate with they’re employees if you stand out you get picked on to be over worked supervisors are always in meetings with the door shut. when you try to ask them something they never have a solution. And don’t fix issues that are told to them overtime it has become a big messy place money is being used for new systems and should be used to fix equipment and office chairs and more ! Overworked can’t even drink water or use restroom 

If you are thinking about applying for this position, do yourself a favor and give it a hard pass instead. Unless you are the bold, outspoken type, it will make you regret leaving your previous job. The business office is extremely toxic, which is ironic given the altruistic mission of the organization. Deeply rooted management faces no consequences regardless of how they terrorize subordinates and talk behind their colleagues' backs. The work itself would be alright if it weren't for the lack of adequate training and unrealistic timelines on heavy projects for multi-million-dollar government funding, and then the new folk are blamed anyway when things don't go according to plan.  Ask about the turnover and see what kind of answer they give... 

The location is good, benefit right now is good compared with low pay rates, but it could getting worse benefit and still low pay if a new contract pass. The management is worse, they don't care about the employees. Only thing that important to them is a money. Asking the clinic staff to do extra work to meet the numbers for insurance and Medicare, but staff don't get extra paid. The grand money don't go to clinic staff, force staff to do extra work during pandemic, with out proper training or hazard pay. You do it or you out of work. Company culture towards to cooperation more than non profit organization as it used to be. Only management get paid well. The organization want to cut down the PTO between 20-33% depends on how many years you work, basically you will get less PTO than when you first started 5 years ago.

If you don’t know anyone in higher places you won’t have opportunity to grow. Everyone in the business office is miserable with the exception of a handyman of people. Management doesn’t understand the work and pretend like they do. If you haven’t been in the department for 15+ years the ones that have will have a horrible attitude towards you. Hostile work environment where no one can give you a straight answer and when they do it changes within a week and are told you were never given the direction. If you do well then you’ll have a target on your back because the people with tenure will be upset for being made look bad and management will give you the work of all the department and excuse it with “restructuring” instead of holding low performers accountable . If I could give them a -5 star I would.

As a LPN I assist the clinic providers in performing point of care testing, interacting with and educating patients, giving immunizations and injections, and other nursing tasks. I also help the medical assistants in rooming patients if they are behind. I like the work, but there are lots of cliques among staff, mostly because the majority of my coworkers are young (early 20's) and women. I feel like it can mirror high school in lots of ways. The pay is quite low also. But it is a good job for someone who stays away from drams, and new nurses looking for steady 8-5 hours.
