Since starting as a teller in 2023, I’ve grown a lot professionally and taken on a wide variety of responsibilities. I’ve become more confident in my abilities and am proud of how far I’ve come. But I also need to be honest: much of that growth came through trial and error—not through structured training or consistent support—and that’s been frustrating.

From the beginning, proper training was lacking. Most of what I learned came from co-workers doing their best to help, but many times they passed on incorrect information. Mistakes inevitably happened, and instead of creating a learning opportunity, we were often scolded and made to feel incompetent. The mistakes were usually minor and easily fixable, but they stemmed from poor or inconsistent training, not carelessness. Yet rather than addressing the root issue, we were left to figure it out ourselves.

When I expressed interest in advancing and asked to be trained on account openings, I was told no. Later, when I applied for the personal banker position, I was told I needed to already know how to do the job to be considered—which felt like a catch-22. I had already taken initiative to learn how to open accounts, issue cards, send wires, and process banker paperwork, all while still meeting my teller responsibilities. I wasn’t compensated for the additional workload, and it often left me overwhelmed and staying late just to keep up. Being told I wasn’t qualified after doing the job without the title or the pay was discouraging, especially after already being turned down for another internal position.

It took applying outside the company to finally be offered the personal banker role at Equity, which frankly should’ve happened much sooner based on the responsibilities I had already taken on. Advancement here feels like something you have to fight for—often by taking on two jobs at once without recognition or fair compensation.

There’s also a noticeable lack of communication between departments. When something goes wrong, the default response is to assign blame instead of fix the issue as a team. And it’s disheartening to see coworkers ignore their responsibilities—like sleeping while the phones ring off the hook—without any real accountability, even when management is aware of it.

That said, I will give credit where it’s due. Since our previous manager left, the work environment has improved significantly. Our new manager supports us, equips us with what we need to succeed, and treats us with respect. She doesn’t micromanage or undermine us—she trusts us. That shift alone has made a huge difference, and I do feel like I finally have the support to do my job well.

I’m sharing this because I care about this place and the people I work with. But the lack of training, the uphill battle to advance, the added responsibilities without compensation, and the lack of accountability in some areas have been genuinely frustrating. I hope this feedback helps push for change that will benefit not only current employees but future ones too.

Working for Equity Bank in the Lending department would be a fine job for an entry level college grad. Not just any college grad, but a college grad void of any hobbies, family, children, significant others, non-work related aspirations and zero need or value for free time. The money is good, but be prepared to pay the price with your personal life. Also, be prepared to worship your immediate leader and their leaders. If you don’t, your advancement opportunities will be squashed regardless of your knowledge and expertise. Mid and senior level leadership egos are very fragile, so handle with care. Also, be prepared to throw almost all of your credit underwriting standards out the window. Reckless loans under the loan committee thresholds are made on a regular basis to “hit numbers”. Hitting these numbers is essential to make sure your immediate supervisor and their managers get their bonuses. Beware of the Officer Incentive Program, as the criteria to bonus is very subjective and can be based on whatever metric your superiors desire. In most cases, the goal post will be moved or the criteria will magically change if you begin to qualify for decent bonuses. Furthermore, your bonus (if you get one) will be paid as 1/2 up front and then the rest amortized out over the following 8 quarters - they’ll “forget” to tell you this in your initial interview. If you do decide to take the plunge and work for Equity Bank, make sure to get everything promised to you in your interview in writing, because otherwise you’re likely to end up with zero completed verbal promises. If your outside of Wichita, forget any local sponsorship or donations outside of CRA requirements. Lastly, the turnover rate is UNREAL - likely due to what I’ve described so far. This is a big bank mentality organization trying to disguise themselves as a community bank. I can assure you, they are anything but a community bank. Proceed with caution!

Understaffed and overworked. Corporate attitudes have taken over and the customer and employees are afterthoughts.
I was a customer first and then worked at Equity  for a few years. Company was a positive place for work when I first started but the past two to three years the culture has completely changed. Upper management only cares about cutting costs to line their own bonuses. A split between shareholders is more important than the Customer or Employees. Employees are leaving left and right and employees are expected to take on multiple jobs for the same pay. There is no appreciation shown and when anyone tries to convey concerns to upper management they are told that the employees are “negative people” and you need to have a more positive attitude. Customer service has suffered because employees can’t focus on their jobs because they are pulled in every direction every day. And when you say something about how much is being put on your list of to do they don’t want to hear it. Being overworked is not  working hard enough because they expect more from you than you have time in a day.

The Good: Equity Bank is really known in the Wichita Banking community as a training bank. You can work there, learn about how banking works, then move on the one of the more stable banks in the area. A lot of the training is on the job, which can be good in some situations but bad in others. The coworkers are also great while you are there. They are very friendly and willing to help you. 

The Bad: The computer systems are outdated and run poorly. It is expected that you will work overtime and not just a little. Be prepared to work 20 to 30 hours overtime a week, especially right now. Since the bank continues to acquire other banks, they hemorrhage employees during mergers and thus dump all the work on their current employees. Expect to work hard to move up. Like other folks have said, if you say you are overworked, they expect you to just work harder and put more of your own time into the bank. The bank management also seems to just be concerned with shareholder value rather than their employees or even their customers.

The Ugly: If you leave, be prepared to lose a lot of your work friends. Seems like the culture struggles with people moving on. There is a lot of roasting former employees about how they just could 'cut it' at Equity. It is sad when most of the people at the bank don't really seem to enjoy working there anyway. Lots of complaining about problems but never solutions. 

I’ve found the work environment to be supportive and focused on employee growth. A typical day involves partnering with leaders across multiple locations, guiding recruitment strategies, and supporting staff development. I've learned the value of adaptability, relationship building, and strategic planning.

Management is responsive, though there’s always room to enhance communication flow and consistency across departments. The work/life balance is good, with flexibility where possible. Compensation and benefits are competitive, though continued benchmarking could help us stay ahead.

The hardest part of the job is managing complex employee relations across diverse teams, but it’s also rewarding to help resolve issues and improve engagement. The most enjoyable part is mentoring managers and seeing employees succeed and grow within the company.

Overall, Equity Bank fosters a strong culture of integrity and care, and I’m proud to be part of its mission.

Local managers are usually fine and direct co-workers are typically great to work with. But corporate hiring (or lack there of) is ridiculous. Branches are often short-staffed and overextended. Scheduling appts or vacations can be difficult bc of lack of staffing, and there’s a lot of favoritism when it comes to time off approvals among other things. Efficient, hardworking employees aren’t compensated for taking on new/additional responsibilities; said employees tend to do a bulk of the work while others are allowed to skate by on the bare minimum with no repercussions. 

Response to COVID-19 was subpar compared to other institutions and local businesses. Lobbies closed for 1 month at the very beginning. Following that, employees were provided sanitizer, wellness checks, and nothing more. If quarantining was necessary, we had to use accrued PTO/sick days or not get paid at all. Eventually they supplied 1 mask/employee, but this was probably more than halfway through the pandemic. 

You know the company must be bad  if they send out an email requesting employees to write positive reviews. If you company was truly remarkable and offered great benefits and at like you falsely claim then I’m sure there would more positive reviews.  Unfortunately it’s rather strange that there is a bunch of random influx of positive reviews all fairly close together. 10 days of pto is not that generous, and 6 days for an entire year is rather disappointing. Yes they offer competitive wages, if you are competing  against the cost of living. FYI the cost of living will win.  They do not pay any portion of health insurance premiums leaving you to pay more out of pocket. They claim to have their culture I care values ingrained in them but is not reflected in anyway.  A typical day looks like being micromanaged by someone who had no material skills. The opportunity for employment is rather bleak. 

I have been very happy at Equity Bank! I have always had supportive managers who value my contributions and encourage me!  I also love that Equity lives out its core value of community focus!  I have had many opportunities to volunteer in the community through Equity.  The Community Development Team sets up these opportunities on a regular basis and asks for volunteers.  Our leaders are also very accessible.  The Chairman and our President & CEO often stop in to training classes to introduce themselves and meet new hires.  And they hold regular town halls and send out videos to share announcements about great things that are happening at the Bank.   It is a very fast-paced environment, and we work hard, but we also have fun!  

I enjoyed working at this company until a management shakeup in 2016.  The new management promoted has a long way to go to be successful.  They unceremoniously fired me with no warning, no prior discipline, and no reason given other than "we no longer want you here."  I was the fourth person terminated out of this group in 2016 by new management.  None of those who were terminated were given reason other than "the new head of the department didn't like you."  

Seriously, there are better places (and banks) to work at in Wichita that don't require constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if you're going to get fired.  I'm pretty surprised that this $2 billion dollar company gave control of the largest revenue driver of the entire company to a 30-year-old with anger issues and a 40-year-old with no backbone.

Equity Bank is a flexible environment with a supportive staff.  Upper management takes an interest in the people that work here and are always looking for people to promote and help grow their career in the banking industry.  I have worked here over two years, and they have paid for extensive training and the NCP certification to ensure that I am knowledgeable in my career here and I will succeed.  This certification also includes that we continue our learning, and the bank pays for all that training as well.  Equity has plans to continue its aggressive growth plan and therefore is always looking for people who are willing to help with this growth and keep the bank advanced in the market.
