In terms of job security at Erie Insurance Group, I think you are in constant competition with your peers, often compared. Management is over-bearing and make numerous errors. If you do not possess a college degree you will not advance.

Management
In general, managers at Erie Insurance Group are overbearing to the highest degree. Through the years the company has changed drastically. There is a high level of stress placed upon claims adjusters and appraisers. So many great long term employees have left and those that remain are under extreme stress. Newcomers are quick to realize the pressure is too much to bear. High job turnover.

Culture
Collaboration with my colleagues at Erie Insurance Group is the only positive, amongst the benefits. I've met some great people through the years. There is a great deal of favoritism so some climb the promotional chain far faster than others, especially for those who are bi-lingual. They promote diversity and encourage attendance to community events.

Overall
My experience working at Erie Insurance Group has been traumatizing. I went from being a valued employee to being washed aside as favorites gained the spotlight. Customers became numbers and the true purpose of the company was lost in order to implement strict processes to ensure Erie is rated highest above all other insurers. Sadly, I intended to retire with the company. Through the years those that held the company to a high level of integrity have since retired. New managers with other insurer histories are now implementing other insurers strategies and are no longer focused on the very policyholders that line their pockets. Cutting corners is encouraged and being thorough discouraged. Those with disabilities be very weary. Through the years I upheld a strong work ethic, maintained professionalism and reminded managers my customers were not numbers. I've seen many reliable and respectable co-workers up and leave after decades of service, it's disheartening.

Working at Erie Insurance offers numerous advantages that make it an enjoyable experience. One of the key aspects is the understanding and supportive supervisors. They acknowledge personal commitments and allow flexibility when you need to leave for personal reasons or scheduled appointments, ensuring a healthy work-life balance.

I cannot speak for the rest of the company but this is an awful place to work in IT. The company uses ITIL standards and they are not implemented correctly. One of the biggest struggles in this place is trying to get your work completed without having to jump through a million hoops. Trying to find a competent resource is harder than finding a needle in a hay stack. In fact I'm pretty sure more than half the IT staff was promoted up from the mail dept.

If your close to retirement and sitting around all day is your thing, this is the job for you. If you actually want to learn about the career you have chosen, don't work here. If you think that management will help... Forget it. Management at Erie insurance is absent. I mean they have people with the word in their title, but that's as far as it goes. In fact they have IT Managers here that neither part of their job title describes them. Idiot is definitely a better description for many of these people.
 Just because someone works in IT doesn't mean they know IT. Although most of the people here are dedicated and have participated in the drinking of the kool-aid. I find it very difficult listening to these clowns in meetings while keeping a straight face.

It's a good place if you need money but I couldn't imagine staying until retirement. They put a lot of effort into the company's reputation which is a huge let down when you start working for them.

Erie Insurance takes service seriously. Service is applied to every human interaction we have. We treat each other with respect. 

A typical day for me starts by logging into the computer and checking my e-mails. I determine what I need to do for the day. Reply to e-mails and sometimes phone calls. At least half my days have a meeting or two. The rest of the time I get to do the fun stuff, programming. When working on projects, I read and analyze requirements, create designs based on the requirements, code the changes or new programs from the designs, and follow the SDLC to move the changes to production.

Management treats us as people. Everyone is referred to by their first name, even the managers. One-on-one meetings with supervisors are conducted where the employee can keep the supervisor aware of any issues. Supervisors are facilitators to help you be successful at your job and career.

Co-workers are there to help each other whether it be getting a work task accomplished or to celebrate a milestone or to console someone who is grieving. They care about each other and the company. We get more done together than we ever could on our own.

For me, the hardest part of the job is meetings over the phone. But this is something I have to get use to. The work force and the work environment is changing. We have to adapt.

The most enjoyable part of my job is doing the programming. I love figuring out how to get the programs to do what is needed and to do so efficiently.

Blue collared workers at erie insurance are treated like second class workers, unfilled positions to keep people from actually moving up. During a meeting, the question was asked on how the blue collar workers could move up and make more money, and the answer from the higher ups was to find a way to move to the insurance side of the buisiness. The maintenance and cleaning teams are by far treated the worst, you will be told to do things and help out other departments that are actually paid more than you, for instance go do grounds work bit get paid less than them to do the same work. The health benefits are by far the only advantage to working here, the maintenance team is by far the most understaffed and underpaid team at erie, you interview to do maintenance work and end up doing landscaping and setting up for party's for the higher ups. This company also micromanages its employees, make sure you let them know what your working on at all times, where your going, when your using a vehicle, who helps you out with a work order. If you do make a mistake dont worry 3 different people will scold you for it. Dont go to your work station to fill out a work order because if the boss walks in  they just assume you are slacking off because you sat down to fill out paperwork. My take is don't work for this company unless you are going to be working in a cubicle.

Their hiring process was very professional but misled on job description.  I was told the job was busy and will need to be able to multitask.  I should have asked what their definition of multitask was.  I worked at a busy office prior and had to multitask but this is not the case here.  They expect you to answer phones, respond to emails, take care of voicemails, fix claims that aren't your fault and make initial contact with new claims all while trying to take care of your current insured people.  Oh, don't forget to make sure you deal with old claims that you had nothing to do with.  My group of new hires, at that time, was hired in on a hybrid schedule but that was a lie as well.  That lasted a year then they decided that we need to be in office with "bank days" to work from home.  The only employees that seem to be happy are the supervisors/managers.  The general staff are the ones getting dumped on.

You are always on the clock, even when you clock out at the end of the day.  You still get new claims, voicemails and emails when you are not there.  You may only work 8 hours but you are on 24 hours unless you are on vacation.  Then, you only have to worry about emails and voicemails.

Please think twice before applying, the package my look pretty but what is inside is not nice.  They throw a wonderful benefits package at you but that is not enough for life happiness.  I want to save somebody from making the same mistake I made before I came here.  Grass is not always greener....

As a supervisor in the Material Damage Department, would have to audit uploaded appraisals, handle incoming difficult customer calls and offer positive solutions. Daily coaching and mentoring with assigned staff through 1:1 conversations, performance evaluations and feedback through claims activity.  The job was rewarding as I had the opportunity to offer assistance to customers who needed guidance with their claim.  I also tried to make an impact with my staff and give them positive recommendations where coaching opportunities were detected.  Being in the claims department, it created some difficult incidences at times.  Customers become emotionally involved with their claims and you can only empathize and sympathize with them and help them through the processes. At times, as as supervisor, you too feel the pain of the customer and you too become emotionally involved.  I have learned to handle one issue at a time, give 100% to each matter and always address the customers needs.  The customer must be able to trust you through the entire claim and feel that you have their best interest in mind.  This can only be accomplished through active listening ,responding to their questions and offering positive feedback in the process.

Many differing reviews here but the common theme of where those are not satisfied is claims.  The workloads are high pressure with far too much incoming and no time to do anything but move from one claim to another, including one tedious system-related tasks to the next due to outdated and time-consuming requirements or system limitations.  Too much clerical time is consumed when one could be actually working and analyzing their claims.  You are given no "breather" to spend time to work on existing claims load.  Staffing is inadequate to keep up with the company's goal of being Above All in Service.   The company has a great reputation and those working there are people who care, but they need more help, or a change to allow adjusters to have more time to do quality work for their customers and for the company.  Management is a toss-up, you don't know what you get from one to the next.  Co-workers all seem to genuinely care about their work and service, but many voice being under-appreciated with little in terms of praise, and only when you do something wrong are you provided input.  As one other reviewer posted, "Gotcha".

As a clerical person, you will spend most of your day on the phone getting talked down to or yelled at because of something someone above you did, the calls come from the agents, medical providers, lawyers, restoration services, body shops, and people insured with Erie. The adjusters are usually not available to take calls and the person on the phone rarely wants to leave a message most likely because they've already left one. When not on the phone you will need to attempt to keep up with you own work, help other clerical workers, and try to explain to adjusters why you can't do what they are asking you to do, then defend yourself to your supervisor as to why you can't do the task. management is generally relaxed and apathetic, they will do what they need to do to get you to go away but that's about it. Erie suffers from a rather bad case of Ivory Tower syndrome, ever event and special happening is held in home office in Erie PA and while they do offer invites to the other branches, neither branch or H.O. is willing to foot the bill for travel expenses.

Erie presents as great company but in the MD offices they practice extreme nepotism and it has strong racist undertones - These aren’t my personal experiences only, but is usually the main topic in their annual office review. A typical day is usually busy because the office is typically always understaffed and their compensation amounts doesn’t compare to industry standards, making it difficult to fill roles. Management is basically non-existent until years end when they attempt to be present so they can obtain their annual bonus in march, and at that point their presence is mostly to chastise and belittle employees through micro-management. The company culture and identity based on the people they place in managerial roles are a far cry from what is expected at a Fortune 500 company that champions integrity. The hardest part of the job is poor management and the understaffing. The best part of the job is that most positions are remote. While at Erie I learned they have excellent products, they promotes exceptional services and have terrible management, culture and follow through.
