Family Resource Home Care

I had the privilege of working in an administrative position at two different branches at FRHC, and experienced two very different examples of company culture. The branch manager had a huge impact on whether you would look forward to coming to work each day or cry in the parking lot regularly before walking into the office. Unfortunately there was toxic leadership at one of the branches I was at, but the majority of my tenure was at a branch with a phenomenal manager who greatly influenced how much I enjoyed my role. As a CGM, daily tasks include monitoring the real time view schedule to ensure caregivers are making it to their assigned shifts and collaborating with scheduling team to ensure coverage is found for any open shifts or if a caregiver does not show up to a scheduled shift. We also provide guidance to the scheduling team to staff clients ongoing schedules and work towards ensuring every caregiver has the hours they’re looking for each week. We supervise caregivers- receiving feedback from clients and implementing coaching/training as needed, conduct field observations, performance evaluations, and other employee management tasks. CGMs also facilitate orientation for newly hired caregivers after partnering with talent acquisition/recruitment to help onboard. We monitor compliance to ensure licensure is in place/renewed yearly, annual continuing education is done on time, background checks/fingerprinting is scheduled, and so forth. The role is dynamic and fast paced. There is a lot of multitasking with nonstop phone calls, texts from caregivers, emails from clients/families/social workers, walk in caregivers, documentation documentation documentation, and many meetings with various collaborative departments each week. It keeps you on your feet, you will learn a lot about state regulations and compliance, customer service and satisfaction/resolving problems and complaints from clients and caregivers- but it can be draining and exhausting. 

Having a supportive branch manager and team makes the biggest difference. Some of the upper management/corporate leadership is wonderful, some is toxic. You’ll work with incredibly supportive people who want to help you succeed and some who will enjoy making misery - a good branch manager helps mitigate this by protecting their team.  The corporate executives have clear goals and expectations, weekly growth is expected which can also lead to burnout or healthy competition. Being such a big corporate conglomerate, there are perks and benefits- bonuses for keeping up with goals, leadership retreats, tons of office snacks/treats/ coffee delivered automatically, new software and pilot programs often, etc. 

Your experience really will vary by branch. 

The hiring/on boarding staff at the main office was probably the only interaction with anyone in this company that seemed professional, organized, or even punctual about responding to questions and getting back to me.

The local branch I was assigned to was anything but that. 

Management immediately showed that they were constantly overwhelmed, apathetic to the HCA's and clients needs, and no interest in providing support beyond the absolute bare minimum. 

This attitude caused issues with every single client I had, as they all expressed frustration and dissatisfaction with communication (often directing the frustration at me, despite telling them I was also being ignored), difficult situations that required a response/action to time sensitive issue, or even getting clarification on doing things in accordance to company policies.

The case manager never even bothered to explain/follow up with clients on anything, so often I was being treated more like a servant and not a dignified HCA with boundries and rights. Since management would ignore my messages and calls for WEEKS at a time, I was forced to endure several clients who became irate and uncooperative, putting me in a difficult situation with no way to resolve the issue. 

Whenever I did finally get someone to respond, often the branch manager himself after everyone else in the office shrugged me off, he would often just say "Oh, I had no idea this going on, let me fix it" then I never heard anything else and the issue STILL DIDNT GET IT FIXED. 

This job was an absolute headache and I should have taken all the other one star reviews more seriously, because a lot of what people complain about this company is incredibly spot on to my experience. 



Only work for Family Resource if you would like to be paid 4 different rates, none of them more than $18.50 per hour.  You will never get a client who pays anything over it, for them to say their rate is up to $20 is false.  Almost all of their clients are on Medicaid, which understandably means the rate will be lower, but they try to cut your pay at every corner.  Their so-called training pay is $15.75, "transportation" pay is also $15.75- meaning anytime you have a client in your car, and loved this one- if you work more than 4 hours at a client's house you will get your pay rate reduced by .50 cents.  When I questioned this rate reduction because they explained it as any shift over 4 hours, so why not start the reduction OVER 4 hours. But nope, the ENTIRE shift gets the lower rate, not the time worked over 4 hours.  Really they want you to work a dozen of these little 2 or 3 hour shifts so you can see the most clients because they are chronically understaffed.  You will have to find your own clients thru their buggy app they make you use, and they can't seem to figure out how to keep clients scheduled with the same caregiver. 

And you will be working with a disorganized office that NEVER, EVER answers their phone.  Have a simple question about a client's care plan- leave a message.  Are you lost and can't find a client's home- leave a message.  Have an emergency with a client- leave a message.  The only redeeming factor is some of the local office staff are very nice, but they don't make up for the fact that Family Resource is a corporation with multiple locations throughout Oregon and Washington.  They are big enough to know better and to support their caregivers better; they just chose not to.  

I loved the job itself helping people but you will not get the schedule you want, this is a part time job not a full time. They need new management, proper training and more people in the office to properly be able to help clients and caregivers. Clients and caregivers are constantly complaining about the lack of communication and it makes the job difficult. As far as the Tuition Reimbursement goes, forget it. They say you can work and get paid while doing your classes, you also get a bonus for finishing your classes but what they won’t tell you is they will not give you your bonus for finishing the classes if you do any kind of training in the office. I fought for 2 months for the bonus I was supposed to receive and they basically told me “why would we pay you for coming in and give you the bonus?” I did not find out until after I had finished the classes that I was not going to receive the bonus and them calling me into the office counted towards that bonus. Even though I had asked numerous times if me going in would affect the bonus I was told I’d be receiving. I was told after the classes that I should be receiving a certain amount and I did not. The people in the office couldn’t answer what was going on, payroll could not answer and then they sent me to HR. 2 months later they continued to pass me around in a circle. Please be careful. I’m also adding that state exams for HCA license is behind about 5 months. My office couldn’t help me with those questions they gave me the wrong email and information so I had to call DOH and they laughed and said that my company should have the correct information for the caregivers. 

This company seemingly comes off as a good place to work. They put you through the HCA immediately, but you have to pay for the entire thing with no reimbursement. The training is subpar webinar style. Physical training is thorough though. The office seems nice and inviting, but after the training, you never see anyone again unless you have to stop in. The communication with the office is less than inviting. You will probably never get through to them on the phone. The scheduling is handled more so away from the office, and so you can’t guarantee that it will be consistent. If you have any personal concerns, they will likely be ignored, or will be handled at a late date, if they handle them at all. There is no gap pay, and mileage reimbursement while on shift is oddly figured. The pay fluctuates, and they cannot explain why. You will likely never get the full time hours you seek. They will change your schedule without telling you, and you will work with a bunch of random people unless you put your foot down, and even then the schedule isn’t consistent. The perks are subpar at best. You can receive reward money, but how it’s calculated doesn’t make since. You can pick up extra shifts, that say you will get extra pay, but it’s rarely applied if you accept the extra shift that’s available. The schedule is flexible enough, as you can voice when you need time off and what your preferred hours are, but if you’re trying to work full time, don’t expect to ever hit that mark unless you don’t mind being on call, and work 7 days a week with a completely open availability. Most of the clients are wonderful, and will be the only reason why you stay as long as you do, because there is no other reason to stay otherwise. 

I loved working for this company as a caregiver because I felt the real impact caregivers could have on clients, and because I felt that the goals and mission of the company, as a whole, corresponded with what I wanted to fulfill- to really and genuinely help the needy. But my experience in the office and with management entirely changed my perspective of what I thought this company was. I would NEVER entrust the care of my loved ones to this company! I have been thoroughly disappointed in it and its so-called mission. What I have witnessed first-hand is more an interest on growth and “good reviews” rather than the authentic care for clients that I signed up for initially. The upper management makes it impossible to have a real impact on lives and is more considerate of their personal success than that of the people who depend on them for help (at least, that is what I saw in the branch I worked for… I would hope it is not the same for the entire company!). For this reason, I am happy to be no longer working for them. I would like to have a real and lasting impact, maybe regardless of goals that need to be reached; but to know that clients are being served as they need to, and should be, is much more important to me.  I had faith in FRHC and believed that their mission was authentic until I joined the office/management position. This entirely altered my hopes and understanding of what they are… I wish to/ will work to find a company that truly does uphold these standings. But FRHC has been a complete let-down in this respect… without going into the details of what I personally experienced, I would like to find a company that truly does care for its clients more than its personal esteem and that could have a real and lasting impact on its clients!!!

I was new to this type of work and definitely felt thrown into it. I wanted to explore different avenues of health care. Some of the clients are great and truly in need of help. Then, there are those that are lazy and there to be the house keeper/chauffeur. They pay milage but also you are paid less an hour for driving.  The pay is very misleading. You are paid less than minimum wage for the orientation. Were they make you feel like it is a team environment. They have the office stocked with coffee and snacks for them. Then the aides are just bodies making them money .  The pay is advertised as $18.25-21.75... no. $16.25-16.75 is more accurate. I did have a client that was 35min drive each way and in need of a lot of help and was paid $17.25. If I had any questions after they threw me to it, I was made to feel dumb for asking. Or told I was contradicting myself when I didn't care for how a client treated me or had a question about there lifestyle. Didn't make sense. (If you even got a response) I had a client fall pretty hard and no response to multiple calls and messages. I wasn't sure what to do or how to report it. Client said they were fine and didn't want a fuse. Just put the incident in the notes. The clock IN clock OUT app is frustrating. They are hard to get ahold. You are paid less than you actually put time in with clients. Also, the start taking money of of your pay check to pay for the HCA cert. If you don't finish in 120 days you are out all the money. Not for me. Good luck to those that can do this. Some of the clients are amazing and truly great humans in the need of help. Unfortunately the companies that run the facilities don't pay or train like they charge. 

Be weary of jobs in which the apply to hire process is immediate. The office is catty. Hours will be given then randomly taken away. The managers are very understanding to your face, but very catty and will gossip loudly and cuss about you when they think you cannot hear. You take jobs through an app, and clock in and out through an app. The office is notorious for not answering their phones when things go wrong or when you need to call out or be late. You shouldn’t have to call another city’s more reliable office for help because your main office is choosing to not get their phones together in case of an emergency. The clients make the job worthwhile. They are always kind and understanding, and often have issues with the office as well. Scheduling consistently changes hours randomly and does not make the client or their families aware of the changes, and it makes the families or clients incredibly upset sometimes. Sometimes these changes are as drastic as 1pm to 9pm to 4pm to 10pm. These changes will often determine the level of care occurring during the shift and it’s not taken into account when making these changes, and again, they’re not letting the families know. It’s nerve wrecking showing up to a client’s house knowing you might be potentially upsetting someone because their hours are totally off and they weren’t ready for you yet. It should be management’s job to protect you from harm’s way and not directly leading you into one.

What is the best part of working at the company?
​In any professional relationship, transparency is the bare minimum. While I initially put time and effort into pursuing a role here, the misleading nature of the recruitment process was a massive red flag. I am glad I never got the chance to work for a company that lacks respect for people's time and professional integrity. Sometimes the best career move is the one you don't make.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most exhausting part of this role wouldn't have been the workload, but the moving goalposts. When a company lacks transparency during hiring, they usually lack it in management, too. I would have likely faced a daily cycle of shifting expectations, where the rules change without notice and the 'job' you were hired for looks nothing like the one you're actually doing. This kind of environment forces you to spend more energy navigating internal chaos than actually doing your job, leading to a level of burnout that no paycheck can justify.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
​I am writing this to save other candidates the time and effort I unfortunately lost. My experience with the hiring process here was extremely disappointing. Throughout multiple stages, I was provided with misleading information regarding the role's responsibilities and the timeline for a decision.
​After investing significant time in interviews and prep work, it became clear that the actual position did not align with what was advertised. There is a total lack of transparency and respect for the candidate's time. I would not recommend applying here if you value clear communication and professional integrity.

After being employed For only a couple of weeks I noticed a huge lack of communication coming from the managers and everyone in office. The first beginning steps of this employment seemed very rushed through and then after finishing the HCA class, you get thrown out on your own, and the terrifying thing is that even if you try to get a hold of anybody in the office, you are either greeted by AI who refuses to transfer you and swears they can fix what’s going by sending the team an “urgent message” (which will never get looked at or responded to let alone fixed) or if you try to message anyone in the company app, including the location manager of that branch nobody will ever reply back. Now the longer I've worked with this company the more i see this level of lack of communication and being able to get a hold of your employer is a huge issue, especially if it pertains to safety while you are in a client’s home. When it comes to Scheduling, Recently there has been a change where Scheduling only is what is run by AI, which would be helpful if I didn’t get four calls from the AI chat bot trying to confirm the same shift that I have already denied, I get a minimum of two text messages asking if I will pick up that same shift and sometimes I’ll even get a call from what seems like a could a different AI Scheduling bot or could just be a human that’s pretty antisocial. If you want the freedom of choosing your own schedule, but you are fine with the annoyance equivalent to a heartbroken ex trying to get a hold of you even after you've blocked them (coming from new numbers but all saying the same thing) as well as communication and safety is not a big deal to you, you just may fit in.
