Federated Insurance

The good:

You'll mostly have great co-workers here, and since it's a big company in a smaller town, those co-workers and their families will end up becoming your friends and teammates and volunteer buddies and sports co-parents outside of work.

There's a cheap cafe and a small but nice gym on site, and the benefits are pretty good, including a pension. Pay is quite fair, especially if you live in Owatonna.

In response to many people leaving for remote jobs, they've relaxed their work-from-home policy to allow it on a nomadic (not regular or permanent) basis. Federated thrives on the relationships between its employees, so full-time work from home would be detrimental to all. However, the flexibility to work from home on a snowy day, or with a sick kid, or just because you really need to focus that day, is great. (You're on your own for stocking and setting up your home office, though.)

They've recently upped sick time accrual, given more vacation to newer employees, and vastly improved new-parent leave. Too bad for those of us who could have really used that years ago, but it's overall positive.

The bad:
A shift in recent years from a conservative growth and stability mindset to an aggressive growth and trend-following mindset has had severely negative impacts on workplace happiness, work-life balance, and general employee engagement. Aggressive goal-setting has led to overworked and undervalued employees across the board, and turnover numbers reflect that. The long-valued culture is changing, and not necessarily for the better.

Management does not listen to feedback from employees, even when they've asked for it. Instead, they roll out solutions like casual Fridays and free coffee on Mondays. Nice gestures, but they entirely ignore the deeper issues. 

Salary range adjustments are somewhat frequent, but they benefit the people on the lower end of the ranges: the newer/younger people, and the people who've gotten poorer reviews and so are on the lower end of the pay scale. If you get consistently good reviews and are near the top of your range, you get nothing from the range adjustments. It's quite de-motivating to realize that someone you've outperformed for years was just handed a raise that brings their salary into line with yours, and you got nothing.

It seems that most recent decisions have been geared towards keeping the gen z-ers around, while disregarding the older generations. Certainly the younger employees need to be engaged and kept around for the future, but doing it at the cost of the engagement of your mid-career employees (i.e., the mentors for those young employees) is not a recipe for long-term success. 

Overall:
If you can ignore (or become) management and just keep your head down, enjoy your teammates, do your work, collect your paycheck, go home, and forget about work, Federated is as good (or better) a place as any. If you want to be more engaged, valued, and listened to, you'll find yourself frustrated.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people I worked with. A *possible* yearly bonus. The opportunity to become fully vested in their pension. But, you have to continue to pass their gauntlet in order to make it to retirement and receive a pension worth retiring on.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
An overwhelming workload and having to meet a production quota while some are allowed to get away with selectively choosing their work (the easy tasks) and others are expected to take on time consuming and complicated work, with no consideration for the amount of time it takes to effectively work policies. You are also scrutinized for every single mistake while rushing through your work just to meet your quota in numbers, or face being put on an action plan which further exacerbates the stress of rushing through everything. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It used to be family centered and coworkers were encouraged to interact and work together to solve problems. Then it became unbearable with any work related conversation leading to a supervisor hovering around and walking by repeatedly instead of simply asking what the issue was and being knowledgeable enough about the process to assist. Total micromanagement with every single minute of your day in certain departments while other departments can basically do whatever they want as long as they are on time with workloads. Favoritism and Unfair treatment is a huge problem if you are in the "wrong" department.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
In the area I worked in, every single minute of your day is micromanaged. You're working on complex policies while also having to stop and take calls for urgent requests throughout the day, putting the more time consuming work lower on the list. All of this while being expected to fit your productivity into a mathematical equation of an average of tasks completed, and coworkers who are allowed to pick and choose the easy work to meet the numbers they expect you to meet. It wouldn't be a problem if work was evenly distributed to everyone and there was no way to cherry pick your work. Since this is allowed to continue after being addressed to supervisors, it results in leaving the hardest work for the same group of extremely stressed out hard working employees.

A typical day would start with all corporate website updates and additions, creation of mockups and prototypes. Once that is complete I would either edit video, work on motion graphics or build proof of concepts for approval on the executive level. 

I've learned that I can easily work with large multiple department teams or small independent teams. I thrive on challenges and I enjoy the opportunity to try something new.

I enjoyed my co-workers, being part of the advertising department and the overall culture at the company.

The hardest thing at the company was its lack of embracing technology, there was always a struggle to get buy in on projects because of the lack of understanding or sense of value, this included our website and its backend functionality.

I enjoyed my office and co-workers the best, we worked hard and had fun doing it, the occasional Call of Duty game didn't hurt either.

After over 20 years in the workplace I was very lucky to find myself at Federated Insurance. Having been here for 5 years now I can say it is by far the best place to work. Management is supportive of all employees to grow and achieve in whatever route takes that individual to success. Promotions are always encouraged for those that want to climb the ladder with support, training, education, mentorship, and corporate learning center and online course work. Leaders in training are often tapped on the shoulder and developed over time to achieve these results. And not just one or two people who are the top performers, all coworkers with potential and drive and interest are given the opportunity to develop and grow their professional skills. Amazing culture, many opportunities for advancement, flexibility of schedule when needed, excellent pay and benefits, 401k match AND a pension program, I feel rewarded by my work every day, excellent support and development to every employee by management, pro sports events tickets and other activities offered by the corporate office and employee fun committee.

First couple years were great but then peoples real nature starts to show. Post pandemic you could tell the company was all about controlling their employees. most management micromanages and sets unrealistic expectations. 
There's no workplace diversity as it is a white male dominated company and though they try to be inclusive it is way too cliquey to feel part of the group. Any advancement was purely off of favoritism. 
Workplace culture is a big emphasis however they put the cult in culture as it is a small town where everyone knows everyone and you're either in or not and the gossiping it terrible.
work/life balance is a scale tipped towards work. Some areas are mandatory overtime and others just expect you always work overtime. Flexibility is near nonexistent and you will be ridiculed for making the safe call to work remote if allowed or for using your time off. 


Commercial P&C insurance company that believes that believes in being face to face for everything including things that could be accomplished remotely. 

Image and appearance are considered everything, especially when management or executives are around, and during times it could be considering impractical or hazardous. The need to wear a suit and tie feels unnecessary. 

There is little to no option to work from home unless you are hired in for a remote position, which will not be anywhere near head office.

Risk Management is toted as the #1 priority but the message doesn't always come off the same way from one day to the next.

Some systems are outdated which can make it more challenging to be working in the field. 

There is a lot of autonomy in remote positions. Easy work/life balance. There has been a large emphasis on professional development recently. There is a lengthy training program which can be supportive for those new to the industry. 




It’s a wonderful company and treats its employees well. It provides 401k with 6% matches, pension, bonus, great insurance packages and 3-week’s paid vacation. People are very nice and supportive. They design their own training classes for their jobs, which are relevant and hands-on. You can learn with helps from many experienced and talented people.

Having said that, I wish it had allowed working from home, especially for IT staff, and I wish it were more open in understanding different mindsets or expressions due to cultural differences. But this can go around: As an individual, I was not open enough to accept different mindsets and expressions, I didn’t adjust my own mindset and expressions accordingly. 

In conclusion: If you don’t mind living in a small town and less diverse location, and being an hour away from big cities is not a big deal for you, Federated Insurance is for sure a nice place to work at.

Very stressful environment & very unrealistic & unattainable company goals. The company is growing too fast & they do not have enough employees, let alone have employees that want to stay after training. 
Benefits are average & not as amazing as everyone says; the amount of vacation & sick time you accrue per year isn’t enough; vacation days are lottery drawn & not guaranteed. 
Overtime is mandatory & can range anywhere from 3-10 hours a week. 
Room for advancement & promotions is very limited; currently there is a 2 year freeze for advancement outside of your current department & is very internally biased. 
The company literally only cares about the Marketers & puts them on a godly pedestal making them always right & they can do no wrong; 70% of the marketers are arrogant & treat fellow employees like they are worthless. 
Teamwork is not a thing at federated; supervisors do not listen to their employees concerns, problems, or even ideas to better the department & company.

The hardest part about working there is the mandatory overtime. It is every week of the year and has been for years. No work/life balance. They hire slowly and not enough, all while trying to grow at a ridiculous pace. Your work is also monitored and micromanaged. Not the freedom of a normal office job, and they change their workload approach on almost a daily basis. The one constant is that you are expected to work hard. The company comes first here. The dress code is unnecessary since most employees have no customer interaction. Most of their benefits are pretty average, especially vacation time. 

There are some perks to working there. They do have a pension plan, which is pretty unheard of these days. It's also nice to have the cafe and gym right on site. There's also an employee credit union. The company is doing well and it's a stable job. Their training program is also really good. I can choose my hours too which would be nice if I didn't need to work so much overtime. 


Federated has been a fantastic place to work. There is significant opportunity to build a career here and advance to other positions if you prioritize your development and performance. The people here are incredible. Co-workers become friends and leadership from the top down truly cares about all employees. The benefits are great. While other companies are laying off people and increasing insurance premiums and reducing other benefits, Federated continues to provide stability and excellent benefits. The culture here is inclusive and welcoming. People here (managers, co-workers, etc.) really do want you to succeed and find a place to thrive here.
