A typical day at work would be coming in and greeting all the staff everyone is inviting and family like. It is best to show up early to allow the computer to load and get ready for your first patient who is already there. Typically, you will discuss patients with the provider you are working with and begin assisting them to rooms. Vitals always came first followed by point of care procedures before the provider comes in. 

Co-workers are very helpful with assisting each other, considering most floors have full time providers and their specialties. In one day, a provider can see near 20 to 30 patients, there are usually 6 or 7 providers working at a time. 

FenwayHealth is a very open to the public community health center. Their focus is to provide services for all of the following:  

All age groups and Family Health, 
Any Culture
Chronic diseases, Infectious diseases 
STI Health prevention and treatment (all categories of this)
Women's health
Men's Health
Genders and Non-binary Identifiers
LGBTQ friendly
Dental Care, Eye Care, and Behavioral Health

I have watched this company grow over 5 years and one thing I can say I have learned is how to appreciate everyone around me in the community. 

The hardest part of the job is the work. There is a lot of Administrative work involved which can really take a toll on your day. The company is federally funded. This can make things difficult for someone who is more into procedures and administering vaccines and medications. Unless you are an LPN, you will not be giving vaccines. CMAs have now been allowed to give Flu Vaccines. Regular MA's are only allowed to place tuberculosis skin tests.

Abusive upper management takes advantage of provider goodwill towards patients by increasing workload with no pay raise. Will do lip service practices by conducting surveys and hiring outside consultants and still do what they want without any employee participation.

Claim to support liberal causes and yet constantly deny fair wages. Providers constantly told they are unproductive and need to see more patients. Management will fudge numbers to pretend you're getting a raise by taking it out of other parts of your pay. No pay raise even when hours increase. 

EMR is pathetic. Despite feedback, no one wants to get rid of it. Support staff are underpaid and constantly turning over. All that work will fall to providers who will then be told they are not productive. If you're a provider think twice about this alone because it is constant humiliation to justify yourself. 

Only people getting paid big numbers are management. they keep hiring more high paying upper management jobs while telling providers that they don't see enough patients to bring in the money for all this. 

Several providers quit in last few months. Would also quit if did not care about patients.

Thanks to staff being so committed to mission or else it would fall apart overnight.

Fenway is underpaid, understaffed and disorganized, compared to other health care organizations I have experience in. I love caring for our patients, but many of them would be better served getting care elsewhere because this is still an FQHC. Fenway used to have a great mission as an LGBT clinic years ago but now there are other places in the area for patients to access higher quality LGBT and HIV care. We've lost 1/3-1/2 of our primary care providers and over half of our nurses  and support staff recently, and the C suite gave us a two week notice to get people to voluntarily resign for a small pay out, so they could save costs. They claim budgetary difficulties due to changes in drug prices and building an in-house processing facility, but they could have planned for those years in advance. They could have expanded telehealth services and allowed employees to work from home in order to generate more visit revenue and retain vital staff. They've denied raises for years to some employees, or have given inadequate ones to others. They have broken promises made at hire to several professional staff. Without being able to retain staff, patient care suffers but the  CEO and upper management continue to make half a million dollars per year in this supposed "community" health center. There's also no parking and not easy T access.

I have been with Fenway about 4 years now, 

I'm mostly there for a flexible schedule, benefits and to offer the best care to the community, I'm happy to have a good supervisor that accommodates and appreciates her employees the DA team offers a good work environment. I have learned alot since it's a general practice there is lots to learn.  In the other hand management is something else, the supervisor seems overwhelmed and overworked, she dosen't seem to have the support she needs from her fellow co workers., As she is running like crazy others are more relaxed on their computers. I can go on.  A lot has changed with 2 years but hopefully they can push they and appreciate the workers they currently have, it's not easy taking other task when you are short staffed with no raise in 2 years, alot of drama with medical departments, nurses are being treated unfair and have created a union. Hopefully things get resolved so the company does not go downhill. 

Other than that they are flexible with transporatation it's easy to get to, schedule is great, benefits are excellent. They have lots to offer .

I've worked here for almost a year and a half. This is the first job I've had where I've loved most days. I can see myself working at Fenway for a very long time.  I love that the the staff is reflective of the community it serves- it's an LGBT inclusive environment, with friendly staff. The biggest perk is definitely the benefits- low cost health insurance, free dental, discounts on lots of other things, and generous time off. Plus you can add a domestic partner to your insurance, no questions asked! 

The health center is experiencing some of the typical growing pains that come with adding a lot of staff in a short period of time, but the management team seems to be open to suggestions for improving systems while keeping the community/ grassroots feeling going among the staff.

As a member of LGBTQ communities, it has been wonderful to work at an organization that puts our communities first.  The organization is super in terms of transgender and gay/lesbian/bisexual workers’ rights.  It’s a fantastic group of people who are driven by Fenway’s mission.

While there was some sketchy management behavior in the past, there has been a huge shift in the culture for the better.  Offending managers have left the organization and more worker safety and manager accountability practices have been put in place.

The benefits are really good here - generous time off, great health insurance and free prescriptions are highlights.  Many staff have schedule flexibility.

It is a fast-paced culture but very rewarding work.  There is a lot of space right now in the culture of the organization for new ideas and growth.

This is a great place for anyone who is LGBT+ or BIPOC. Awesome work culture. Really appreciate my coworkers. Advancement opportunities. 

On the other hand, pay is just not competitive. They’re loosing nurses and providers and not putting effort or money into retaining them. Nurse case manager position is doable by remote, but there’s very little flexibility with allowing that. Poor scheduling flexibility over all. Lots of people double or triple covering work. Lots of new people, high turnover, very little support for education of new staff. Haven’t gotten a new nurse educator. Unrest in the nursing department. Lots of talk about changes that just haven’t happened on the course of almost a year I’ve been there. Keeping the building open during winter storm warnings and anticipating 8-12 inches of snow. No compensation for parking and parking in Boston is awful and expensive. No dependable parking. 

Coworkers are the nicest people you will ever meet. Staff is young, energized, and there is a clear sense of purpose in the work. You will be well-supported here. Middle management is approachable 
Pay is fair for newer RNs, but earning potential is not proportional for RNs with experience. Raises are meager and opportunities for nursing career advancement are non-existent. 
The training process is poorly structured and inconsistent. Workflows and skills are learned entirely from peers on the floor, without robust skills labs or other trainings.
The work is 50% patient facing and 50% computer facing, with computer work often involving case management. This role heavily involves management, normal clinic tasks, occasional triage.

Working alone not having to be up under someone everyday for 8 hrs

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Shady management, very judgmental and the will never back you up. If you don’t hold a title of a manager, they treat you like you the bottom of the barrel and they will gossip and talk about you even if there’s really nothing to talk about they turn nothing into something to talk about they pretend to be genuine and then the moment You don’t play fetch  or kiss they butt  they will turn on you

Management and patients can speak to you any kind of way no matter what happened. You’re always wrong.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Pharmacy has poor training.  The Manager is very disrespectful to  patients and talks the Pharmacist (not from the location) rude and mean.  The pharmacy Techs don't like helping the front and leave on pharmacy tech to do everything in the front.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Where the interns are on their phones and other pharmacy tech feels like they shouldn't help the front and get an attitude when they have to help the front.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Okay, but at the pharmacy could learn respect towards the patients.  One Pharmacy Tech and Manager would talk trash about of the patients.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very Busy  and keeping you on your toes. Making sure the work flow is done the day.
