Peak 10 was a Managed Service company providing hundreds of clients with local storage and self management of their environments separated from their offices, remote hands on management of their environments for those with no IT staff. 

I learned a lot about how Data Centers functioned with regard to power requirements, heating and cooling and inter-network connectivity. I was exposed to a number of new technologies I had not previously seen, but with such a large customer base I was well out of my comfort zone, not able to reach a level of expertise with these technologies I believed would be most beneficial to the customer or to myself, and was unable to mold supported environments to meet what my experience suggested they should be.

While this was a technical support/managed services organization, their primary goal was sales of their services, both for new clients and to renew/upgrade existing clients. Many co-workers and myself were regularly expected to be salesmen, an aspect of the position with which I had no experience and resulting in my inability to find success. Competition was fierce and many co-workers were not receptive to cooperation and/or sharing of knowledge and experience in their respective roles.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The local teams at the sites are wonderful it’s like an extended family. It feels like you actually are part of something you can take pride in.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Constant changes to the operations team. Realignments, No local sales presence unless it’s a major market. Having to trust equipment that is beyond end of life yet required to maintain 100 percent uptime at maximum efficiency.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It truly depends on which market and role. The company pushes for a unified strategy across all departments but there are many silos that work on their own with little cross collaboration which can cause friction and misunderstandings.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
From an onsite perspective it’s mostly dependent on your shift. Many times it either hours sitting in a room watching the site without a single ticket to work. Other times it’s chaos with multiple customers needing assistance, deliveries, long lists of cleaning tasks, or working with the site leadership when something breaks.

Working here was one of the worst experience I have had in my 30+ years of corporate work. Did not learn anything new while at the company. Only learned how to be lazy and pass the buck. Training was non existent. The only type of training that I received had to do with how to use the applications necesary to do my job and nothing else beyond that. Management is incapable of managing the group without giving preferential treatment to their close friends.  Many of the employees were promoted to a higher position just because the previous employee left and there was a vacancy and they were promoted just to fill the gap and not because they proved their knowledge base and abilities. The culture was lacking professionalism and work ethics. Everyone just did the bare minimum and no more. Hardest part of the job was just having to come to work every day I was schedule to work and put up with my co-workers.  The most enjoyable part when I was done for the day and went home.

Very fun place to work, typical day was to post daily wires, credit card payments, Lockbox payments, complete daily spreadsheets, process credit/debit write offs. Assist customers with invoicing, acct questions. Learned various ways to complete excel spreadsheets, various reports, and general ledgers. Management was very interactive, and non commutative with their employees. Very segregated from each other. My co-workers were very friendly and outgoing. The hardest part of the job was dealing with management to be on one accord. The most enjoyable part of the job was having the option to work from home sometimes, and our team building functions. Being able to actually talk to the CEO as a person and the way he treated all of the employees not just as a number, but having a trustworthy relationship with him.

Flexential talks a lot about growth and innovation, but internally it’s a different story. There’s a lack of clear direction, constant shifting priorities, and limited alignment across teams. Leadership often feels disconnected from the day-to-day realities, which leads to reactive decision-making instead of thoughtful strategy.

Processes are inconsistent, and a lot of work ends up being manual or duplicated across systems. This creates frustration and slows down progress. There are talented people here, but they’re often stuck working around structural issues instead of being empowered to build meaningful solutions.

A buyout/merger with the company formerly known as ViaWest turned the best company I've ever worked for into a 'meh' experience. Workload has increased, policies/procedures/systems are constantly changing, changes are ill-planned and communicated. Benefit costs to employees increased substantially while pay did not.

Upper management only uses financial outcome to make decisions without regard to client or employee happiness. Company has no culture beyond local comradery.

It was perceived that the merger would offer new opportunities for growth with the larger company but the only thing it has brought is chaos, low customer/employee morale and additional workload. Little advancement for current employees as the company does not publicize open positions internally before posting publicly so outside hires are the norm.

The unlimited PTO is a real pleasure and is one of the biggest perks of working here, that along with the remote work. The people you work with are knowledgeable and a joy to work with and immediate supervisors seem to really care and want the best for you. That being said on average compensation is low for the level of work done when compared to others in the industry, and getting a decent pay increase can be like pulling teeth. Rules that are laid out for promotions and moving between departments are selectively applied and enforced. 

 

Corporate culture image is good.  Local culture has constant changing of expectations regarding training, procedures etc.  Upper management and middle management are at odds with each other.  Crisis management leadership style at times regarding procedures in place and those expected by Upper Management.  Micro management from Upper Management is growing. Think of micro managing to the the account level and each transaction.  It could be that there is a lot of change coming however the ground underneath does not feel stable.   Actions and words do not align. 

The company has an identity crisis and true area of opportunity with the employees when it comes to important response to employee concerns and career direction. Employee surveys submitted to the Employers Commission strongly suggested this as well, which prompted Flexential to act and launch a career development portal which is also not being utilized. Account Executives often have commission concerns that are slow to be addressed, often unpaid, and very rarely resolved. Because of these cultural issues, an alarming number of the tenured employees have left the company - many of them being in leadership positions.

Overall, you can gain good experience working here.  They promise unlimited PTO, it really means you are at the mercy of your manager to get time off.  Another reason for this type of PTO is so the employer never owes you additional salary when you leave for another job.  It sounds much better than it really is in practice.

Two or three times a year, you have a written and practical test of skill and knowledge yet the pay is below market. Lots of talented people get passed over for promotions because they aren't part of the 'network'.  There is no attempt to retain employees and they want you to move on after a year or two.
