Flowerama

I worked at a Flowerama  franchise location I Iowa City, IA and am sharing my experience for transparency for future employees.

During my time there, I experienced a workplace environment that felt consistently hostile, high-stress, and at times unsafe. Management interactions were frequently disrespectful and, on multiple occasions, I experienced communication that felt intimidating and demeaning in tone. This contributed to a work environment where employees often felt uncomfortable raising concerns or asking questions.

There were also concerns regarding workplace practices and expectations that impacted safety and workload. In my experience, issues brought forward were not handled appropriately or constructively, and concerns were often dismissed or not meaningfully addressed.

Overall, the environment felt heavily influenced by management style, which made it a difficult place to work. I believe prospective employees should be aware that the workplace culture may feel challenging and unsupported by the owner.  

This is my personal experience.

We are supposed to work on orders from companies like 1-800 flowers and Teleflora but they go missing all the time,  printer issues daily or the orders we make are a mess and we get complaints.  You better have great patience to work here because the phone rings off the hook and we get lots of angry customers or vendors calling with issues.  We get walk-ins and they are alright. Place is pretty dirty.  We only have one toilet and its always clogged up.  The sinks are clogged too.  We tell the owner but she does nothing.  Plants are alright but they leave the doors open so bugs fly in and settle on the house plants we are trying to sell.  We are should supplies and flowers daily.  Ordering and accountability is very much lacking here.  On a scale of stress levels 1-10 its a 12 easily.  Things go missing all the time but the head designer is really close with the owner so nothing happens.  Make sure to protect your belongings.   The worst part is there is no work culture,  the turnover is so great we see people come and go daily.  

Flowerama is a good place to work at, but during the work hours that I work, can be super slow. I've learn a lot of things from Flowerama actually. I learn how to prep, cut, and store flowers. My co-workers are excellent great people! they would describe me as being friendly, learn things fast, and so much more! I love my co-workers! the hardest part of the job is when customer ask for specific items/flowers that we do not carry or is out of stock. We usually handle it in a good manners by saying we don't carry those but we do offer some that are similar to those? or we will say sorry we don't carry those. But most of the time everything are on track and perfect to go! I enjoy helping customers! I love talking to all my customers! make them feel like they are truly welcome and comfortable at our store. Provide their wants and needs. Help them with any kind of question they have. I love my job here at Flowerama but the down side is that I don't get enough hours that I wanted! other then that I have excellent co-workers and managers!

Flowerama is both floral and retail driven. 
It is a franchise business and my experience is only with one specific shop.
The staff is amazing and the management is extremely understanding. It is a family owned business and that feeling extends to the others working in the shop.
The shop is very well run and during the busy times (mainly Valentine's and Mother's day) that shows in the surprisingly smooth way things go on in those times.
However, since this shop is still only about 6yrs old there is not a likely-hood of a pay increase nor compensation for what little advancement is available.
I have been there almost 3yrs and still make the same as someone who comes in for seasonal help.
But if you want to get floral experience and learn the ins and outs of the floral business then this is a great stepping stone.
not to mention the head designer, Isabel, is amazing.

Its a back breaking job.  We get tons of boxes in each day that all need to be unpacked.  During the time the phone rings off the hook.  Turnover is huge so you never know who's going to be there when you arrive.  No dress code at all so that may work for some.  Lots of cigarette breaks for smokers.  Things go missing all the time,  the person who is doing it still works there but she is best friends with the owner so she gets away with it all.  The customers are sometimes nice, sometimes not.  Nobody wears masks.  The flowers are pretty and fragrant.  We don't get many walk-ins but when we do we need to help them.  We get crazy texts messages from one of the designers all the time that make no sense and are no coherent but nobody can say anything to her as it will just result in a argument.  I've seen almost physical violence happen at this job between employees.  

A typical day at work included handling customer service, making floral arrangements, taking new orders, processing new shipments upon arrival, and keeping the workplace clean. I learned how to make various floral arrangements and properly take care of all kinds of flowers and plants. The management and my co-workers were very friendly and helpful. The hardest part of the job was making sure that all large orders were filled correctly. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the smiles on customers' faces when they first saw their finished floral arrangements!

Was delivery driver no tips. going into it the store had all new people management would come in and micro manage and make everyone feel uncomfortable. Management would talk to younger employees like they were children and belittle them. Had a family emergency that led to poor mental health and instead of help me with the personal struggles they decided to fire me with no warning or anything. Very old fashioned and messy business. Seems like no matter who they bring in or what they do flowerama is a sinking ship and they will throw you over board first!

I worked at the Flowerama St.Paul & Richfield locations before the new current owners, and while I cant speak on the new ownership, I can speak on working for Flowerama as a whole. The company is very welcoming and is open to teaching new aspiring designers, as I learned everything on the job. The work culture at our location was very friendly and felt like a home away from home. The only downside was that the pay was rather low and we couldn't go all out on designs & arrangements due to profit margins. But otherwise being able to be around flowers, friendly coworkers, and helping customers develop custom bouquets was a huge positive. The busy seasons we're also enjoyable as the team work was energetic and a joy to be around.

It's a relaxing environment to work in, since plants and fresh cuts can't talk bad about you or bring you down. Since working there, I've learned so much about the industry and how to think outside the box on certain floral designs. The staff is helpful, but there are days we can get frustrated with one another (we are human after all). The hardest part is funerals, this statement should speak for itself. We want to be as accommodating as possible and at times, it is difficult to handle such emotions and carry on, though the most enjoyable part, is the reaction to each piece. To see how, happy people are with their arrangements or finding the right bouquet.

Typically this is a very stressful work environment.  You don't hear from management much as its only the owner and she is always very busy.  Very confusing place as flower orders are always getting lost or flower arrangements are not good and we get tons of customer complaints or complaints by vendors who use us.  It feels like we are always short handed and we lose staff members a lot.  One person took personal items from someone else's purse and that really ruined working there as we can't leave our personal items sitting out unattended.
