Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy

AZ is the cash cow for all of the GGNPC. CHT and Retail work HARD and make about minimum wage. There are good healthcare benefits that make people stay. There is a striking inequality between those who work these roles and those who benefit from these workers. You're very replaceable and if you are attacked by a tourist (for instance) they will let you go to avoid liability. Again, this is a cash cow and nothing gets in the way of the GGNPC making money. There is 0 opportunity for advancement, the culture is very much like high school. The work is HARD and repetitive. The sights are beautiful and you can make great personal connections, just don't expect them to lead to advancement. Your safety is not guaranteed and the GGNPC focuses on good PR and avoids helping/siding with its staff. 

The Parks Conservancy went through a very difficult period during the COVID pandemic. Half of the organization's income disappeared overnight when Alcatraz tours and visitor stores closed, and dozens of people were laid off.

As the organization has recovered, it's been reinvented with a commitment to equity. The lowest paid staff have received raises and have free health insurance, with premiums subsidized by those making higher salaries. There's a conscious focus on inclusion both for staff and visitors. Leadership is really listening and responding to what staff need.

The Bay Area is crazy expensive and the organization sometimes can't keep up with that for hourly employees, but that's the same challenge every nonprofit here faces.

Colleagues are smart, kind, and fun, and you get to work for a good cause in a national park.

I didn't have a typical day and that's what I loved about my role. I assisted the lead producer on film and photo shoots. I was assigned my own projects as well and got really great feedback. Prior to the pandemic I was starting to delve into audio work and film. I learned how to storyboard and collaborate with others. I was super lucky to have a great supervisor who was very knowledgeable about photography and the parks. I was comfortable enough to speak up when I didn't know something. My superiors were never condescending and were very supportive. The hardest part of the job was waiting for email responses which was like .001% of my role so I'm standing by my 5 star rating.The most enjoyable part of the job was getting to work outdoors. 


I worked at the Conservancy for several years. It was a wonderful place to work, everyone is very caring and understanding, and the work itself is very fulfilling and challenging, in a good way. I gained a lot of skills that can be applied to any career, communication skills, public speaking skills, written skills, program skills like Adobe, and management skills. They have options for workshops and classes to improve skills or gain new skills. Hardest part of the job was having the non-profit salary in the bay area, working a lot of weekends, and physical labor - a lot of heavy lifting and being on your feet. 

I needed a job for the summer, and I thought working for the Parks Conservancy was a great idea as I got to learn more about my local area. I was stationed at the Golden Gate Bridge and did a variety of tasks while I was there. This was during the summer season so it was always very busy and fast-paced which I liked. The people are great, there was always something different every day, and the view was great. Sadly, I had to leave for school, but I wouldn't mind returning for a role-specific to my major in the future.

The hardest part of the job was the expectation to create a interp walks with no site knowledge and a brief site walk that happened the afternoon before the program all with no information on a group size or age (manager specific problem).

Housing management is bad, dorms literally don't have walls and have mice. Old gas stoves leaked and you could smell it certain parts of the houses.

Other interns forced to work way overtime, and my and other interns workers comp claims were swept under the table.

If you are really a Chef, you won't want to work at this amateur job. The food is nothing more than deli sandwiches with store bought bread and  deli meat. The kitchen is unsanitary with pots and pans rotting in the sink for several days. I may have contracted noro virus from a co-worker there. And from my experience the staff was decietful and unfriendly. Also the Sous Chef pay was ridiculously low. If you're really any kind of Chef you would be better off anywhere else. The last several Sous Chefs didn't work out either..

Typical day consists of interacting with the public and assisting in exhibit operations. I further developed task management skills, public engagement and I also learned of the Conservancies various public out-reach programs. Work place culture is structured but relaxed, easy to adapt to. Hardest part of the job because where I live is the commute. The most enjoyable part of the job is meeting new people and the location setting.

You see over a 1,000 people a day  and meet people all around the world. You have to work well with others. Working at  Alcatraz you will learn history on what happened on the island. The management is laid back and easy to talk to. You have to work well with people from all different age groups. On this job you will be working on six men teams every day. The hardest part of this job is trying to please every person you come across. The most enjoyable part of this job is the amazing scenery you see everyday.

First and foremost, this is an amazing company to be a part of. The directors will guide an teach their employees success, trouble shooting and how to manage a team to grow within the company. Most important, 35 percent of all proceeds from our cafes go back to the Crissy Field Center for summer programs, camping trips, arts and crafts, computer programs and working in our cafes.
