I came in with exactly 3 years experience. The hiring process to my initial division was very quick. A recruiter reached out to me, then I had an on-site interview and offer within a few days.
When I jumped divisions it was very long and drawn out.

Each division is entirely different and like completely different companies. Sure the business statement and culture is similar, but most everything is different. 

If you live near the office you go in 3 days a week. They're flexible with working from home when needed for things like doctors appointments. Some people really abuse the work from home situation but they're the favorites so no issue. But sometimes if you have something sudden come up they can make a big deal about it.

Management is very knowledgeable but the managers I've had haven't been the best. My first manager was a micro manager but I can deal with that. My second manager in my next department was a perfectionist that wasn't willing to teach and was often rude and condescending. I don't know how you can expect new people to be perfect and you not show them, hence why I left.

Pay is meh, I'm sure managers are well taken care of. I was encouraged to learn and do Designations, and I didn't plan to leave but the slightly underwhelming pay and my manager drove me away to greener pastures.

Lastly, if you make us come to office then at least not be so cheap to make us pay to park downtown where other big businesses have their parking arrangements.

Appropriately challenging environment with an entrepreneurial spirit. I was involved with setting strategies, company acquisitions, development of staff, and the introduction of new technologies. I felt everyday was an adventure. I went from supporting daily operations for all GAI Corporate Systems along with various financial systems for the parent company - American Financial Group to being invited to various c-level meetings. For example, there were times when I was told to be at Lunken Airport and be prepared for a two day acquisition trip. I enjoyed the challenges of understanding the corporate strategies and socializing the strategy with my teams. 

In my current role at Ohio National Financial Services, I put together various application roadmaps and strategies to support distribution and compensation systems for Agents. My team was very instrumental in delivering the Oracle Cloud ERP environment. I have also worked on the Architecture Review committee defining ONFS enterprise Architecture. While I find this very rewarding work, it has been extremely frustrating trying to get leadership to support these efforts. I want to be in a position where I can add value based on my strong technical and business abilities. I want to be in a more innovative position.

Culture is very oriented around work/life balance, which is great. Lots of opportunity to reach out and work on new development or be a part of learning something new.

Management has been poor lately, especially upper-management. During lockdowns, executives avoided detailing the company return-to-office plan. Instead, we were sent tone-deaf videos of higher-ups standing against a backdrop consisting of multiple acres of land, empathizing with our lockdown difficulties. Sudden email from the upper-management started the policing of a 2-day in-office policy with a focus tracking and metrics. This also overrode agreements made between employees and their direct manager. Since then there has been a heavy amount of difficulty across all of IT with recent initiatives going massively over planning time and large business turnover causing support difficulties. The leadership, though, has made it clear that their focus is entirely on making sure we are all downtown 2 days a week, with the implication that failure to do so will result in more days in-office, potentially causing even less focus on the work at hand.

Overall, avoid if possible. Dictation by executives you rarely see in-person might make you feel like you're worth more as a warm body than a developer - despite your best efforts.

This was a great place to work with excellent management and helpful, supportive co-workers.  It was a very busy and challenging position with a large caseload. 
My days were filled with lots of different scenarios and working with the claimants was very interesting.  If I did not have to relocate to another area because spouse's job, I would have stayed there. I am still in touch with some of my old co-workers who also have the same positive evaluation of this company. We worked in a very positive, uplifting work environment. The management was very professional and always communicated well at all levels. In fact, the CEO would meet with employees and set a positive tone throughout the work place. He believed in MBWA ( Management By Walking Around) which meant he would make a point to speak with each employee on a regular basis to see how they were doing and if they had any problems, questions or insights about the company. Overall, this was a very professional, caring, supportive and team oriented company.  


What is the best part of working at the company?
Individuals are so highly respected and valued at this company. I consistently hear from my manager and other leaders in the company how appreciative they are for the value I’m bringing to the organization and how supportive they are of me and wherever I want to take my career.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
My role is highly visible with a lot of travel required, although I enjoy the travel, it sometimes can be stressful

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is very collaborative and supportive. The organization is pretty flat so I know I can reach out to any level of leadership at any time with questions or feedback and it will be welcomed. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My day is mostly filled with talking with agents and underwriters, selling the company and our coverages and value, as well as negotiating on behalf of the agent to the underwriter

I like them fine - I've worked for most of the big guys over the past 30+ years. They are a specialty group, with many separate companies under their wing. Be carefully where you step, some of these companies they sell off quickly when the time is right. I'm with a division they acquired, that has been making them money, so things are good for now. They don't like promoting from within, they like to put you in a box and stifle any advancement if you are good at your job you were hired to do. So learn what you can, but always keep an eye peeled for opportunities that may arise elsewhere. Pay is average to slightly above. Some of the specialty groups they own have very different reporting structures. You may be reporting to someone you always thought should be reporting to you. Ha! You best have a sense of humor to get by on most days. My motto in the insurance world is keep smiling - it keeps management wondering what the heck you're up to.

Very exploitative, underpaid job with lots of pressure to handle a huge volumes of claims. Poor management and some of the higher-level staff are work-shy and more interested in chatting and laughing with their friends in the office or doing shopping online rather than giving you a hand when you’re swamped with work. The example they set for the employees is not great as you see them working very little while they work you to your bones. They happily delegate you tasks that they should be doing. The work in itself is not bad; it’s just that there's no meritocracy at all nor chance of career advancement, but lots of favouritism. This just makes you feel devalued and exploited. Also, some supervisors will easily humiliate you for making mistakes or not reaching the targets and say negative things about you behind your back. I wouldn't recommend this role to my worst enemy.

cons: low pay, stressful job, poor management 

Management is out of touch and does not care about workers, particularly in the claims department.  There is a pervasive "us and them" attitude between management and lower level employees. Heavy workload with no breaks, unless you clock out (depending on who you are of course). They do not hire enough people for the work and expect employees to take up the slack. There is no room for advancement. If you are not a "yes man" you will be frowned on. They make changes in policies and procedures and do not inform workers who are then penalized for doing what they were initially told. There is little to no communication between management and employees. The rumor mill is where you get your information. Salary is low with minimum yearly raises. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

GAIC is mediocre at best. If you're looking for a 9-to-5 job that lets you coast along, and happen to be one of the "good ol' boys," you'll fit in great here. Otherwise, you'll be in for a world of frustration. GAI-IT likes to present itself as a flat organization with an open-door policy and casual dress code, but it's not. There are a lot of cloak-and-dagger personalities here, and younger employees are subjected to bullying and intimidation to "pay their dues." They're 15 years behind on their mainframe retirement goals in large part because they're aimless and still use management techniques from the 1980s. I would strongly encourage anyone still working with a conscience and a lot of drive to leave before they come for you.

I had a disappointing experience during my time at this company. In my perspective, the work environment often felt misaligned with the values they promote publicly. I frequently encountered situations where decisions and communication from certain members of mid-level leadership felt inconsistent or lacked transparency, which made it difficult to trust the direction being given.

Additionally, some internal practices left me uncomfortable, as they did not always seem aligned with what I would consider ethical or employee-focused standards. These issues impacted both morale and the overall sense of fairness across the team.

While there may be departments or leaders who operate differently, based on my experience, I would not recommend the organization to others looking for a workplace built on integrity and honest leadership.
