Griffin Hospital

I worked there for many years and saw many changes with in the hospital. Dont ever get hurt there. I knew many people who were injured there and treated like garbage when they needed time off. Many are forced to take LOA. Plantetree is a joke and no one follows it. Does anyone even know the true meaning if it.. Everyone complains about being overworked and under paid. The staff are like robots just doing their jobs. Half the nurses I wouldnt want working on me or passing out my meds. Half the time you cant find them when you need them. Their attitudes are despicable. The secondary position work like dogs for even less pay. You could get better pay at McDs. They hired an outside company to help them get outta the hole they are in. Lets face it they are going to be owned by someone else soon. This company made many changes throughout the hospital by cutting positions and making a larger work load for everyone still there. the people who take your insurance information now work in call center style and have a quota. How do you put a time frame on taking insurance information from patients???; especially when half of them dont do their job right and only a few of them are thorough. Last, they have way too many Administrators. Every time you turn around they are hiring more. Get rid of a few and maybe you could pay some employees more compensation and the hospital might be able to pay some bills and stay afloat and employees would have better moral to go to work and not find it elsewhere. . Id rather sell hot dogs on the side of the road than work there ever again. I feel sorry for all the employees there who do a great job and get ---- on every day and fear for their job.

At Griffin Hospital a typical work day consists of greeting patients as they come in, setting up for daily testing, pulling schedules and charts as needed, checking printers for any add-on tests and prepare for each test appropriately. I set up the patients and stress lab for doctor then assist the doctors with stress tests. I also have to make sure all medications are logged, not expired and secured at all times and check defibrillator everyday to be sure it is in working order. Also have to check the temperature of the refrigerator where other medications are stored. 
While working at Griffin Hospital I have learned to read EKG's, scan Holter Monitors, check pace makers and Stress Testing. 
Co-workers are always a pleasure to be around and we all help each other if needed. 
The hardest part of the day I would have to say is trying to keep everyone on the same schedule when you're working with 2-3 different departments. 
But the most enjoyable part of any day would be when my patient is having a test and they say "thank you for taking the time for me". Most patients come in anxious about the test because the unknown can be scary, but I found if you just take a couple extra minutes to really explain the test to the patient their anxiety levels will come down from a 10 to a 1 or a 2. Knowing that I had something to do with that makes me feel like I did my job for the day. Comfort is everything and patients appreciate it.

Griffin Hospital is a small, community hospital that prides itself on its homestyle feel. When you walk into Griffin, your immediate thought is not of a hospital, but of relaxation and healing.

This is mainly the reason why most patient's in the Connecticut Valley choose Griffin. It is often described as "friends and neighbors taking care of friends and neighbors."

All employees of Griffin are expected to abide by the Plaintree way of healing. This philosophy treats not just the patient and his or her ailments, but also the patient as a person. Paying attention to the patients comfort and privacy, and understanding that for a person to heal completely, you must treat them as a person, not just a patient, is what Griffin is all about.

Working at Griffin Hospital has taught me that although I may be busy and have several patients waiting for a test, the one patient in my room is the most important, and taking extra time with that particular patient will go a long way. I was often thanked for being so patient and never rushing someone because I was busy.

While my own patience was never overlooked, it was often a difficult part of my day. To do a thorough exam and be sure I have completely viewed each organ, and never rushing the patient that maybe needs more time getting changed, all while knowing I have several more patients waiting tends to be stressful. Thankfully, I learned superb time management skills and ways to keep the stress levels down to a manageable level.

That's the best way to sum up Griffin as a whole. Externally, it's a beautiful organization with it's heart in all the right places. But internally it's an antiquated beast that should have been slain years ago. The EMR is outdated beyond belief, the staff are underpaid and over worked, management is stuck in a "well this is how we've always done things" mentality to such an extent that they are still using paper records for most things. If you try to advance things and recommend streamlining, you're told to stay in your lane and chastised for going against the status quo. The company throws millions into aesthetics but refuses to spend the money on things that truly make a patient experience better. Sure, reiki and yoga are nice activities but if your staff are so underpaid that they're fleeing to other organizations it's a sign something's wrong. The patient portal is a mess, there's no parking, the company has two separate EMRs for the hospital and it's physicians and it creates endless annoyance and problems for the patients themselves. This of course is all ignored in favour of how many compliments we get on how nice the facility looks. Griffin needs to enter the 21st century and start to keep pace with the larger organizations around it or it will die. It doesn't matter if something is pretty if it can't function and that's Griffin's issue to a T.

A typical day at work consists of scheduling patients and setting them up in their examining rooms or aqua therapy. Updating productivity charts, medical address lists and managing correspondence from therapists to doctors. I gained a huge education of what it is like to work in a health institution. Griffin management has a "people oriented" methodology which allows the staff to have respect of one another and work as a finely oiled team. Griffin Hospital also serves as the flagship hospital for Planetree, an international leader in patient-centered care and has received national recognition for creating a facility and approach to patient care that is responsive to the needs of patients.

The co-workers are very supportive and always pick up the slack when needed. They are a cast of colorful characters that I enjoy working with them. The hardest part of the job was understanding state insurance policies and procedures that my co-worker has helped me with on several occasions. The most enjoyable part of my job is the comradery and friendships that we have developed with one another. It makes the day go by quickly and is a nice feeling that we constantly work as a team.

In general I truly enjoyed my coworkers and I loved the one on one time I got with the patients.
On the down side they started me off at a very low salary and there was little to no chance to improve it (example: no performance/evaluation based raises, they didn't even give me a raise when I graduated with my associates). They also froze my cost of living raise for two years... in the end, over an almost six year period of time, i only saw a 20 cent or so increase in pay. Which honestly would have been ok with me if they hadn't almost doubled my work load in that time. I started out as a unit sec for the Critical Care Unit, something I have always been extremely proud of, and ended up their full time secretary, patient aid, phlebotomist, telemetry tech, and ekg tech for a fourteen bed unit. The job was honestly more than one person could bare but I always tried my hardest. When I left to go back to school it broke my heart but it had to be done.

I worked two different positions over the years. I first worked 2nd shift .My employment was ended (laid off with severance package) while I was a 1st shift "road phleb". 
     A typical day was obtaining specimens and entering them into the system (Meditech), then delivering them to the various departments they belonged in. 
      My manager was a very professional gentleman. He was fair and easy to go to with any situation. And I had wonderful co-workers I still talk to til this day.
      The hardest part of my job was obtaining blood from newborns, not the draws, but the new parents and their anxiety. It was hard on them emotionally. I was effective in calming their worries.
       On the flip side, I loved working with children, even though they were coming for blood work, throat cultures, etc. I was able to engage the parents and with their cooperation, obtain the specimen, sometimes without the child even realizing it.

The start of your shift there are a lot of ER holds. The tech that is leaving sometimes doesn't do their job and do vitals on time or do stocking so you're left to do vitals blood and stocking the beginning of your shift. Nurses expect you to do everything while you have 12 patients or more in a certain area in the ED. You try to get everything done but it's not possible. There are some nurses who are great and some techs who are amazing as well. But there are nurses there that are just grouchy and mean and there are techs that work there that have been there for a while and think they know everything and are just overall mean in general and will write you up with one mistake that you make. The overall place is a mess because of Covid so just stay away.

Job started as an easy to learn entry level position to gain medical field experience. Everyone shared the work load and played their part among the team. But over my time working for my department work drastically slowed down and the department had to be separated just for the sake of having enough workload for the employees and maintain their weekly maximum hours allowed for the department, getting to the point there was at most 2 people working for each position in the department. When the cdc called an end to the covid pandemic they chose to let go of a significant portion of those working for the department with no heads up whatsoever. 

So pretty much, Job was nice while it lasted but it’s pretty clear you’re nothing more than a number to them and once they no longer need you they drop you without a second thought or concern.

Teamwork and great leadership 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
HR communication, clearer instructions prior to starting regarding giving specific dates for first week orientation etc. versus “you be going on an over night retreat” but no date listed ahead of time. Especially because as a parent need to make arrangements for childcare. It would be very helpful.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Positive and good leadership. Camaraderie among staff. Good orientation, and I like the Plaintree philosophy. I truly like my leadership and open door approach for questions and answers.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Shift report to oncoming staff, management provide answers to any questions or concerns. Always available support to help with patient care, etc.
