Guardian Credit Union

I worked at GCU for 5 years during my early career and experienced endless opportunities for advancement. In fact, during that time, I applied for 7 advancement opportunities, 6 of which were granted. Management at that time was operating under a very different regime in which salary freezes, skipped bonuses and employee layoffs were the the first tools to reduce expenses. Even still, the culture was great and always entailed a healthy work-life balance.  

Foolishly, I was enticed by another offer with a competitor for a higher salary, and I took it. I ended up at that competitor for 3.5 years before the lack of career advancement and empty promises from management drove me back into the hiring market. During that 3.5 years I was gone, GCU experienced rock bottom earnings, major regulatory scrutiny and a complete shift in management as a result to try and clean up the bad dealings of former management’s practices. 

I initially reached out to GCU to attain a reference for another job I was interested in applying for, but my former manager had since become president and was very interested in hiring me back to help “turn the ship around”. I was nervous to enter into an environment that was one bad regulatory review from being merged back with the competitor I had just left, but decided the risk was worth it. And it was. Since coming back in April 2018, GCU has made leaps and bounds in their earnings, continuously exceeding expectations, despite the unexpected COVID-19 changes and has weeded out many of the managers that have made working at GCU less than enjoyable. They also regularly treat employees for sometimes no reason at all and have implemented an unofficial “no lay-off” policy, meaning if you work hard, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to losing your job.  The culture has improved significantly, even from what I thought was great to begin with.  GCU offers great (and very generous) benefits, along with flexibility when it comes to family and unexpected circumstances.  I will soon be “retiring” to stay home with my young children, otherwise I would have hoped to work at GCU until actual retirement age.

 I have been with GCU for nearly 15 years and have been in many different departments and positions, gaining a wealth of knowledge on how most departments within the credit union work.  Some people have the mentality that they dread coming into work every morning.  Not me! I can honestly say I love what I do and enjoy the people that I work with!
Currently GCU is the strongest it's ever been with a team of leaders that genuinely care about their employee’s well-being.  There are not many companies out there that have a flexible work-life balance and GCU offers that along with a generous benefits package.  My career has steadily grown over the years here at GCU and my manager takes every opportunity to show me how to do new things to help me grow further.  The CEO and Executive team at GCU have created what I view as an "open door" culture, and I feel comfortable stepping into anyone's office or calling them to talk without fear of judgment or criticism.  The executives can be seen at different buildings saying hello to everyone within the credit union and striking up friendly conversations about mostly anything.
I thoroughly enjoy working here at GCU and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else! 


 I would like to start off by saying that I've had a couple different jobs in the past and this is by far my favorite.  Normally I dread coming to work especially early mornings but since I've started at Guardian Credit Union I've truly been happy and excited about coming into work.  A typical work day for me easy overall.  We have our normal busy hours but nothing to overwhelming.   I love everyone I work with, and upper management is amazing.  Everyone here is so personable and understanding. I would say the hardest part of the job is remembering everything, but we have many resources and  management and co workers are very helpful as well.  Guardian Credit Union is very flexible and has tons of opportunity.   I see myself here for a long time and my goal is to definitely work my way up to a higher position.  

Guardian credit union was a sad time out to my career. I never understood the saying “a fish rots from the top down” until working here. I was also losing valuable skills and not gaining any while employed here. Senior management also watches the staffs every move on camera and will come down on the team if they’re not standing enough.  When consulting HR for advice about difficult transitions for the team rather than helping create a solution I was advised if staff don’t like it they can just leave. Communication throughout the company interdepartments is nonexistent. Peers refuse to collaborate. If you seek long hours 6 days a week with no appreciation and lower than market pay with no growth this is the place for you. 

Most employers that say they promote within are intending to go with the strongest internal candidate for the position. except for GCU. GCU will promote based on the convenience of who is applying for the position even if their work quality does not reflect a promotion.

I believe that the higher up leaders in the Savings side of GCU mean well and intend for GCU to produce and be a fun and good work place but because they are not as involved with those below them as much they do not truly understand what it feels like to work with them and the environment that many lower level employees may feel.

I love working here! It's different, wonderful experience, and a fantastic learning environment; There is always something to learn. The members we get are usually pretty lax and nice, with the occasional typical grouchy ones. My co-workers are wonderful to work with, as they are always very helpful and supportive in my success. It makes me want to work harder and progress within the company. I love to learn new things here, as it makes me feel much smarter lol The pay is alright, just wish I could make somewhat more just to balance with the expenses of today. Otherwise it's awesome!

I really enjoy coming into work everyday! My co-workers and members make the day go by fast and we have a nice family/friend relationship we have built together. I wouldn't trade my job in the world. i enjoy helping our new members (young and old) how to stay safe from being scammed and educating the younger generation to save money. i enjoying getting to know our members and making them happy. Also having a manager who helps you succeed and helps you grow.  

I have worked for GCU for a long time and have gained a lot of experience in the financial field. Days can be busy to slow but I enjoy coming to my job and working with my coworkers, we work in a friendly, casual and fun environment.  My management team is great, they are always willing to help me when needed along with knowing they appreciate me and my hard work.  
Being here for long term I have been thru ups and downs; every job has its stress, but I find myself less stressed because I have a great team and management. 
I am very happy at my position with GCU and wouldn't want to go anywhere else. 


A typical work days consists of receiving and making calls in regards to delinquent loans or following up on making promise to pays. 

Also, filing and processing bankruptcies for Chapter 13, 7 and 128 cases.

I learned how to adapted to a fast past team oriented enviornment where every situation handled is differently when it comes to selected accounts

The hardest part of the job is staying on top of constant emails with customers at times but when managed correct is not a big issue.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the employee moral day in and day out.

I have worked for Guardian Credit Union for just about a year and have been shown nothing but kindness and respect in every way. I am happy to go to work each day and I feel as though the things I am doing through the Credit Union truly are important and are helping our members. It isn't just a 9-5 where you clock in and out and you feel a disconnect: I am invested in my coworkers' and members' lives, and they have all become like family to me. GCU gives me purpose and I am forever grateful I am able to work for such a great company.
