Hancock Whitney Bank

To begin with, I'll say if you're lucky enough to be placed in a branch with good management your time there won't be as stressful. I started off in a branch with a spineless manager and an assistant manager who aspired to be like Hitler and once even signed an email that way. She also told me once that she was surprised she couldn't make me cry. While I loved my coworkers, management made life miserable and they always seemed to be out of the branch when they were needed. I put in for a transfer and found out after I accepted the position that the regional manager (who was terrific by the way!!) finally decided to give them both the boot and replaced them with AWESOME managers. I would have given up my new position (one rank higher with slightly better pay and only minutes from my house) to continue to work under those managers.

At my next branch, the managers were very friendly and understood that your life involves more than the bank and that things come up. They always tried to help you out as best they could. The downside was this was a brand new "super branch" and we were expected to totally blow the other branches out of the water when it came to referrals/sales. The quotas were ridiculous enough before, but our branch was much slower than anticipated so getting referrals at all was nearly impossible, especially since I mainly worked in the drive-up.

Now that I've touched on it, on to the referrals. The quota was highly optimistic and not based on individual branch traffic which means if you're not in an insanely busy branch it's likely you won't ever reach your quota, which if you were curious, will DIRECTLY impact what kind of raise you receive, if any. If you work in a slow to moderate branch, expect people to steal your referrals. You could be best friends with your coworkers, but you've all got bills to pay. Management and HR don't care that you've tried to push products on every single customer all year. If you don't meet the numbers, be prepared to be talked to like the village idiot and given "tips" on how to get referrals. 

By the way, you're supposed to have DAILY branch meetings. My first branch didn't follow this at all, thankfully, but the second branch had something to prove so day after day we'd sit through mind-numbing meetings - going over product details that were already etched into our memories, the importance of getting referrals while completely ignoring that customers routinely threatened to close accounts if we didn't stop product pushing, and miscellaneous company "news" that no one cared about. The second branch also skipped the Friday meetings to start the day off with games, which were fun if it happened to be a game you liked. If it was a game you absolutely hated, if you refused to play you weren't being a "team player." They tried to push me into a multiple branch game of "Product Jeopardy" (after hours of course) because I seemed to have the best grasp of the products. When I declined, I was told that it was a great way for me to get exposure since higher level employees were going to attend. I still had to attend, but I was able to get out of it and have someone else take my place in the actual game.

There were a few other problems. They keep a skeleton crew in branches, which is ok if it's a really slow day. There were days that I'd be the only teller handling both drive-up and the front line because the one teller was at lunch and the other wasn't in for some reason and it's not guaranteed you'll get a floater. It doesn't take a genius to realize the customers were not happy and with good reason. No one wants to go to a bank and not see a teller in sight. There were also the crazy customers. Every branch has them at some point, nothing you can do about it except try to get them out as quickly as possible. Good luck if they're a regular at that branch. The only other major drawback would be moving up in the company. It's nearly impossible, even if you're one of the brown-nosing types. It does happen on occasion, but don't get your hopes up.

Now to the positive things about the job. The benefits were great. They offered health, vision, and dental insurance and if I remember correctly the company did pay for a small amount of life insurance. If you wanted more coverage you had to pay for it, which is fair. They also had optional coverage for heart attacks and other certain illnesses, where you were automatically paid something like $10k each illness if you happened to get it. They also offer a 401k and match up to 4%. You got 2 weeks each of vacation and sick time as well. Of course if you stay with the company long enough, you can earn up to 4 weeks vacation or more, depending on your position with the company. The pay is also pretty good for the position. I left in 2009 and was making about 11.50 an hour. The base pay when I left started at around 9 I believe. I'm sure it's a little higher by now. I was also lucky enough at both branches to have amazing coworkers. They were funny and helpful and we socialized outside of the branch. If you have a good team, they will definitely help to keep you sane when dealing with the negatives the job comes with. 

Here's what it comes down to if you're looking for a Teller position at this company or elsewhere: It's not a horrible job or company to be in. I went into detail as much as possible so people would know what they're getting into. I've read so many reviews in my job search that still left me wondering what kind of experience I'd have there if I was hired. Hopefully by this point you've got an idea of whether or not you feel this is something you'd like to do. I won't return to banking unless I'm desperate, but despite the negatives I will readily admit that those years were the most financially comfortable I've been in my entire adult life. To me, the benefits and pay were enough to keep me there for 4 years and if life hadn't thrown me a curve ball, I'd probably still work there.

I desperately tried getting into banking for quite a few years, and Hancock Bank was the first bank to take a chance, so for that I will be eternally grateful. Other than that, this bank is awful to customers as well as employees. 
I advanced at every opportunity that was offered to me for teller levels. I was very good at my job, and loved it. The customers made it worth while.
The Management staff was awful and only looked out for themselves. 
I was always a straight and honest person, whether good or bad. They love to step on you and make you feel worthless. I have seen several friends/co-workers get treated extremely poorly for no reason as it to be comical to the management. 
I know staying on with this company was not good, but in this economy jobs are hard to come by and I have a family and bills and responsibilities, so I had to stay. I recently left the company, and I am stressed about how to pay my bills, etc. but the weight and burden I no longer feel in working for this company and negative co-workers is amazing.
The HR for this company is just as bad, they will not believe you if you have an issue, they claim they are here for you, BUT that is a lie, My friend and former Co-Worker made a complaint against a Manager, and when I was questioned they did everything in their power to get me to say she was lying. Point blank with this company, you are just someone to fill a seat, and if you cant hack it, then you are out or they will make your work life miserable for you until you leave. 
There are great people that work for this company, don't get me wrong, but the people I worked with everyday, had a holier than thou attitude, but they are some of the most awful and judgmental women I unfortunately know. I know I wasn't perfect but I never claimed to be something that I wasn't. I was straight forward and knowledgeable, and did amazing work. But I would not conform to be someone who would allow someone to treat me poorly and unfairly. 
If you work with the right people in the right branch, then you may be successful with this company, but things are always changing with this company, so don't expect stability.

I was a mortgage loan originator in the Baton Rouge area. I loved my job! I met with customers mostly by appointment, but always available for walk-in customers when I was free. My co-workers were great. I loved the branch personnel. I asked for and received customer referrals from branch personnel. I always treated each customer like they were my only customers. I think that customer service is number 1 for each and every customer. You treat them well and get the loan closed by the purchase agreement date and they will refer friends and family to you, when purchasing their homes. I believe that I learned a great deal of valuable information while working at the Whitney. With the market these days and changing guidelines and loan programs, we have to stay abreast of any and all new loan products and services. The hardest part of my day is when I did not have a customer in my office and I would have to get out to call on and market the great Whitney name and ask for the business. The most enjoyable day is when I was booked with customers all day, as well as calls from my processor that a loan I submitted was approved and in the closing department!!! Lastly, was when I went to a mortgage loan closing at the attorney's office, the customer was there as well as the agent and seller's as well as their agent and the loan closed smoothly with no problems and everyone left with a smile on their faces.

•	Conduct/assess financial processes to ensure fiscal accuracy for commercial loan, renewal, charge-off account advance processing initiatives. Perform comprehensive account transactions and reconciliations and document transaction history by creating the customer commercial record. Maintain/update commitments, indirect liabilities, commercial loan audits, as well as commercial loan collateral maintenance. 
•	Assisted The Genesis technical team (Computer Programmers) with the implementation of banking programs (SilverLake Systems), software and debugging that was beneficial to the financial institution. 
•	Perform technical duties within the department that the help desk had in queue.
•	Ability to provide first-level support for hardware, software or peripheral equipment 
•	Helped team members’ trouble shoot minor problems within the department
•	Kept inventory of all the computers that were located in the department 
•	Call vendors and order supplies that were in need.
•	Handles an average of 300 maintenance requests monthly that are received by mail, email, fax, phone and by
      the TOOLS request system. Responsible to research and analyze requests verifying it as valid and within scope of authority. Then process requests received within the departmental established Service Level Agreements. This includes but is not limited changes to loan customer information, billing, billing disputes, credit reporting, loan coding, product and collateral data, payment posting corrections, verifying system calculations and creating loan amortizations, and waiving fees or interest
•	Responsible for follow up communication on maintenance requests, and informing Service Manager daily of any
      unresolved request(s)

It was an okay place before the merger with Hancock Bank, but all went downhill afterwards. While the merger did bring along some changes for the better, they were negated by others. The hours got longer (closing at 5:30 PM everyday, and some locations later on Fridays), causing not only employee dissatisfaction but adjustments to scheduling which made the bank harder to operate. Staffing was also cut, often leading to customer dissatisfaction and inconveniences. They also have something called CSPs, which are surveys designed to evaluate employee performance. They were supposed to evaluate customer service when in truth it was a measure of whether the employee did what the company told them to do, not if he/she satisfied the customer. Anything less than a perfect score was considered a bad score, and sometimes warranted coaching/counseling. Also, sales were shoved down our throats, often shooting towards goals which were near impossible to achieve.  Worst of all, the type of employees hired by the company were very questionable and sometimes unprofessional. I had a couple of supervisors during my time there who I was embarrassed to be working under, due to lack of knowledge of the company/ professionalism. Also, scheduling was nonexistant, I had to make my own despite being at the lowest level in the bank due to managerial incompetence.  I can't speak for any other departments, but if you are looking to work in a branch, STAY AWAY!!!

What is the best part of working at the company?
I started at Hancock Whitney nearly 15 years ago as a teller and have progressed to a Commercial Banker. Throughout my career, the bank has supported me through graduate school, GSBLSU, leadership programs, Louisiana Bankers Association courses, and other professional development opportunities.

Hancock Whitney encourages associates to be involved in their communities through volunteer efforts, professional organizations, and local events. Internally, Associate Resource Groups provide opportunities to connect with associates across the company.

My experience has been one of supportive teams, opportunities for growth, and a culture that encourages both professional development and community involvement. Nearly 15 years later, I'm still here, which probably says more than anything else I could write in this review.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Like most large banks, balancing client expectations, regulatory requirements, and internal processes can sometimes be challenging.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture has always been centered around the people. I've had the opportunity to learn from a lot of talented bankers, work with supportive teams, and build relationships both inside and outside of the company. Community involvement and professional development have always been encouraged throughout my career.

Overall it was an okay job, I just wish we had better management! The manager at my location micro managed so bad it made you want to quiet. When you had to miss a day they made you feel like the bank was going to suffer terribly without you. You get wrote up for EVERYTHING and I do mean EVERYTHING. The pay is terrible especially for the hard work you do. They really don’t appreciate their employees, there was never any bonuses for Christmas  and room for growth was non existent. I applied for a MSB position and wasn’t even considered even though I had been with the company for 2 years  I wasn’t even asked to do an interview! The job is very stressful it’s like they wanted you to be like robots. You could barely talk or even laugh for that matter. The vacation schedule was so unfair I hated it. The only thing I really enjoyed was coming in to see my co workers and with my joyful spirit I always made their day. If we had better management and if they weren’t so touchy about everything I think I would’ve had a better experience. They act like their all about their employees but they really aren’t in my opinion. They should really consider bonuses because the pay is awful and the raises are even worse!!!! It’s pretty much like you had to be on pins and needles everyday because management always found something wrong and it’s like you can never do enough. No matter how many referrals you get or 5 star customer ratings you get it was never enough. All they cared about was meeting there numbers on the dashboard.

I was an employee for 15 years and my biggest regret was not moving on sooner.

Essentially working for the bank was like being slowly boiled, where the environment slowly got worse, but not fast enough for you to notice until much later than you should have. So, while it was a somewhat stable company, I would not recommend it for an IT job, especially with their push to outsourcing to India recently. 

Additionally, I wasn't given the tools or opportunities to make me a better employee or to make me more desirable as a job seeker. While I got on-the-job training, it was self-motivated and not management driven. 

As long as I didn't make any problems for management, my managers mostly left me alone to do the job. Essentially, management would ultimately do what best to minimize problems for themselves, whether that was supporting their employees or not. 

Their work from home policy was the punchline of a bad joke, where they said how great WFH was during the pandemic, but then forced employees to come back into the office fulltime. Supposedly, the CEO was the driving force behind this policy and all the middle managers privately supported WFH, so depending on your immediate manager it varied as to how often you could be remote.

•	Monitors and measures operational risks through semi-annual branch audits aimed at reducing exposure and minimizing corporate loss and providing both administrative and logistical support to Retail while performing essential duties and responsibilities assigned;
•	Responsible for reviewing all branches in Florida and Alabama making sure that each branch is in compliance with the Operational Procedures of the bank; 
•	Established a risk-based audit model for risk identification and audit scheduling for a company operating nearly 300 full service bank branches with worth of approximately $20 billion in assets; 
•	Support all levels of retail management in the Risk management Review process to include preparation of new branch sites with operational materials, audit follow-up and training;
•	Provide guidance , leadership, training and coaching to the Operational Manager, platform staff and confer with subordinate personnel to discuss operational and procedural changes; 
•	Report accurate audit results in a clear, concise and timely manner; follow-up review of exceptions and provide  necessary recommendations for remediation
