A typical day at work involved arriving very early in the morning and diving right into the daily work routine, which included checking e-mails, ensuring that conference rooms and resources were available for the day and week's requirements. Update any changes, enter a high volume of information referent to expense reports, purchase orders, agreement information, invoices, etc., into their respective spreadsheets/database.

Frequent contact with other departments such as Accounts Payable in ensuring that orders were processed and submitted timely for payment.

I worked in a diverse environment with people from various educational and cultural backgrounds which has contributed to the dynamic atmosphere of the office.

The most challenging part of the job was the volume of both electronic as well as hard copy invoices which I was responsible for processing before submitting for approval and then payment. However, thankfully because of my excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize, coupled with my commitment to always getting to work on time, I was never overwhelmed or fell behind in completing my duties.

I enjoyed coming to work because the environment was very friendly and light, people had a commitment to those we served and we truly enjoyed our work.

As a Medical Assistant, I worked with Hawaii Pacific Health as a Pier Diem MA. I have worked in several locations within Hawaii Pacific Health and one thing the different locations have in common is bad management and a negative environment amongst the other Medical Assistants. Going to the different offices within Hawaii Pacific Health, you can never trust the Medical Assistants that have already been there. I experienced a time where I was new to the office, there to only help for the day and the Medical Assistants there seemed friendly at first, but they got too friendly by asking all these questions and they used it against me and put words into my mouth making it seem like I was at fault or saying all these bad things. But those same Medical Assistants would talk bad about their own doctors that they worked with, in Filipino. They would be very sweet and nice to them when the doctor is talking directly at them but when they go into their offices and close their doors that is when the MA would complain about them and tease them. 

Overall, the management and the workplace environment within Hawaii Pacific Health is negative and not the best place to work in, mentally. But if you’re looking for a good pay then my advice for you is to suck it up and just take it on one day at a time. 

The culture at HPH is that don't bring up anything negative.  It is what it is.  The Wooing was much better than the actual date! HR process for onboarding was lacking in professionalism and follow through.  I learned that management doesn't value your concerns or individuality.  The Aloha spirit is missing for the average day to day employee.  The hardest part of doing my job was working with a manager who was biased, had favorites, micromanaged and pretended she cared.  We could produce much better products to the users if the builders were taken seriously and listened to.  There is bias but noone to report it to for fear of repercussions. The most enjoyable part of my job was helping my clinical colleagues.  No internal growth as an employee with 20 years doesn't make the same or equitable wage as an FTE on 2 year contract.  Should tell you something about a company that has to do this for an IT department.  Loved Hawaii, the actual work I did and my friends I made.  Don't bother reporting internal issues because no-one wants to recognize ...The Emperor has no clothes!!!!

They fool you telling you there’s growth !
if you transfer to another role they give you a pay cut it’s like starting all over and you need to go thru probation period all over again. 
The only way you’ll grow is if you brown nose management otherwise forget about it, don’t break your back working hard or being a good employee. 
No work life balance it goes by seniority they guilt you for taking time off.  They’re so understaffed and make you feel like you can’t take time off when that is absolutely not your problem. 
Sick days? That’s funny they make you use 3 consecutive days of PTO before your actual sick time kicks in.
Holidays come out of your PTO
Management doesn’t care about you they don’t care whose toes they need to step on to get ahead.
Existing staff is not friendly and will make you feel uncomfortable for needing training, no one helps you they would rather see you drowned. 
Over all terrible experience I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemies. 


Very cliquey. If someone is buddies with management they will bend over backwards to get rid of you. I can’t speak for all units but the management for mine was inept. There is mandated overtime for nurses, CNAs, food service ext. chronically short staffed due to bad management. There is very little flexibility with scheduling and they will not work with you in terms of school or childcare. Per diem and part time jobs are essentially non existent so good employees get driven away. I really loved most of my coworkers but there are definitely some who will go out of their way to have you written up for the most ridiculous things, such as checking on their patient for them. I was yelled at for answering call lights. I think with better management this place would be amazing to work out. Really sad how awful it is now considering Kapiolani is the only advanced level of care in the pacific for women and children 

I started as a Laboratory Assistant at the former Genetics Lab for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children before I took the position as Administrative Secretary for the Rehabilitation Services Deparment - I dealt with Medical Claims/Insurance, Scheduling patients, coordinate patient services between physicians, Public Health Nurse, insurance, and Early Childhood Agencies, prepare reports and billing for all the therapy services provided by the department: Audiology, Speech, Physical, Occupational Therapy and Early Childhood Services.
The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing the children feel better and improve in their daily living activities while it is challenging to be in the parents shoes who are suffering at the fears of their children having developmental delays.

A typical day for me is answering calls and logging issues, troubleshooting, remote accessing, directory upkeep and more. The job itself is not at all stressful its the people that I work with and the manager that I am under. My coworkers are very socially awkward people that have no idea how to talk to others or our customers on the phone for troubleshooting (we often get Directors that call us and managers and my coworkers do not know at all how to properly speak to them) and if not dealing with them then I have to deal with a bumbling idiot of a manager who doesn't have any prior management experience and also doesn't know how to help you and will throw you under the bus at any opportunity given.

In my 6 years working at Wilcox, which is a part of Hawaii Pacific Health, I learned that they do not value their employees. They know that they are the only real game on the island so your concerns are not their concerns. Their corporate leaders are so focused on THEIR bottom line that they do not concern themselves with what the patients or the employees want, unless it is necessary for the success of the corporation. They like to say that they pay nurses well but when accounting for cost of living it is actually very low. It is very hard to have any sort of normal lifestyle due to low wages. The patient loads are always at 6 patients and the acuity is very high. I would not recommend Hawaii Pacific Health or Wilcox medical center. 

I’ve has 3 jobs here. First was working for the customer service department then I transferred to the hospital as a patient registrar over at Straub ER. Then I moved to Las Vegas for a while. When I returned to Hawaii due to my husband getting military orders to be stationed there, I was asked to come back and worked as a patient registrar in the emergency room at Straub. I ended up transferring to Kapiolani as a scheduler for a more set schedule due to having young kids. Now I’m in Illinois but if we ever move back, I’ll definitely work for this company again. Only thing I didn’t like was the commute. I lived in Ewa Beach and was always sitting in traffic. I loved everyone I worked with. 
I also did my externship at Straub Clinic in Aiea back in college. 

It’s a good place to work if you don’t have to commute far, have dependents, or have any major health problems. Despite the C19 pandemic, corporate requires healthy, happy professionals. If this isn’t you, maybe consider working elsewhere. It’s “all hands on deck” here. Be prepared to take on responsibilities you may not have been hired for. Be prepared to see and be told things that will shock you. No hazard pay during the pandemic. Your SM will be followed. You will have to use PTO on holidays and pay for parking. It’s a good place to climb the “corporate ladder” if you work with the right manager. Company and titles look good on the resume, as they offer great working experience. However, there’s a lot of job hopping, people are moving in and out constantly. Good luck!
